« Vizquel, Melhuse Sign With Rangers | Main | Tigers Not Showing Interest In Joe Beimel »
9:16pm: Lynn Henning of The Detroit News has provided us some relevant quotes from Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski. He's optimistic that his club will be able to add some arms this offseason.
"Sometimes you go after high-profile guys, and sometimes you try and get not-so-high-profile guys," Dombrowski said Wednesday. We've been trying to do both... I don't think there's a dominant-type guy out there. No Joe Nathans or K-Rods. But I wouldn't be surprised if we added a couple of guys."
6:02pm: Tigers manager Jim Leyland told Tom Gage of the Detroit News Wednesday that his club is not done seeking bullpen help.
"I don't think we're done tinkering with the bullpen yet," said Leyland. "I think people might be surprised by what happens before spring training or during spring training. We'll get some things done that will upgrade our club. We're not done yet."
As it stands, Fernando Rodney appears to be the team's strongest ninth-inning option. Brandon Lyon, Chad Cordero, Joe Borowski, Jason Isringhausen and Luis Ayala are among the remaning free agent pitchers with closing experience.

To impress baseball fans, the Tigers will go out and trade three top prospects in their farm to Toronto for B.J. Ryan and Scott Rolen.
Both will go on to lose their jobs by June 15th.

I would advise against Borowski unless you like a closer with an 81 MPH fastball.
Posted by: Alex Trebek | January 21, 2009 at 07:17 PM
Yes!!!
Let's hope bad deals will NOT be made
Again I will say it:
What if the Tigers didn't have the contracts of Inge, Sheffield, Willis, and Robertson?
That's $40 million off the payroll to slash/ save or spend!
Think of the offseason we would have had! (such as a top-tier closer, a star shortstop, and maybe a starter or two)

If they get Ryan it could well happen, or anybody.. He looked last season like a closer on the verge of next "Gagne-idis" syndrome and would not like to see anyone give up anything for him and also have a feeling the Jays would LOVE for someone to take the 2/20M he has coming off of their hands..
Cordero and Isringhausen would seem like perfect fits, the both of them for this team, not sure about Borkowski, Beimel would seem nice also.

Granted we won't do much
But
At least we get a high draft pick (#9)
I want it to be on Aaron Crow, Alex White, or Tyler Matzek (assuming, of course, they are still available...)

What about breeding Porcello for a relievers role this year than having him start the next? I know that would be rushing him and start the clock on his arbitration years, but it is an option.

JOE BOROWSKI! JOE BOROWSKI!!!
Posted by: Ink&Paper | January 21, 2009 at 07:32 PM
Porcello can wait
We have to take him slowly
He's our future
We have other relievers/ hard throwers that can round out the 'pen (casey fien, rudy darrow, Ryan perry, scott green, Cody satterwhite to name a few)
Posted by: pskip13 | January 21, 2009 at 07:32 PM
I think Joe Beimel would make a lot of sense for the Tigers. Especially when you consider all the lefty bats in the division. Sizemore, Hafner, Mauer, Morneau, Thome, AJP, Kubel, Gordon, Teahen, Dejesus, Jacobs, and Gload. Beimel along with 1 of Lyon/Cruz and a flyer on a guy like Gagne, Isringhausen, or Cordero wouldn't be a bad reconfiguring of the bullpen.
Posted by: Marmol11 | January 21, 2009 at 07:33 PM
Stay away from Cruz!!
He'll cost draft picks
For a team that needs talent in it's system, draft picks cannot be freely given away

Indians fan here. Please let the Tigers sign Joe Borowski. Please! Please! Please!

TINKERING? We've been tinkered on long enough.
This bullpen blew 28 saves- that's 26 games where they had the lead in the seventh or later and blew it.
This pen had 16 players pitch in relief last year. 10 are gone (good) but not one has been replaced by a major league pitcher.
Of the six returning, Bobby Seay has the BEST WHIP at 1.49. 110 AL relievers that pitched 40 innings were better.
NOT ONE decent reliever still on this team.
Cruz? Absolutely. That second round pick is about No. 65 because of all the comensation "sandwich" picks.
Sign Cruz
Sign Beimel
Sign Lyon
And Rodney Is NOT the best option to close. I'd rather call Denny McLain out of retirement to close.
Posted by: Tigerdog | January 21, 2009 at 07:47 PM
I would love to agree with u Tigerdog
But
Where r we getting that money from?
Detroit and it's failing economy can't support a $100 million team, let alone a $135 million team
Posted by: pskip13 | January 21, 2009 at 08:00 PM
I believe it would cost the Tigers a second round pick if they signed Cruz. If they can get Lyon for a decent one year contract I think they should do it. I hope to god they don't go into the season with Rodney or Zumaya .
I wonder what Mike Henneman is doing right now.
Posted by: vtpistonsfan | January 21, 2009 at 08:02 PM
Guys, this is gonna take more than just one reliever. More than just "tinkering". All the contenders who finished in the top 15 last year would have to give up a first round pick (except the Yankers who have already given up their first three picks). There are 20 to 25 picks given between the first and second rounds as compensation, so the Tigers second pick is pushed way back. Cruz is the best reliever on the market, and better than what a draft pick could hope to be, IMO.
As for the money, the payroll for the 40 man roster will be at 123 to 124 million when Verlander is done. That's counting Sheffield's 4 million deferred but not Renteria's 3 million buyout. Last year's opening day payroll was 138 million.
Besides, NOT fixing the bullpen will cost more than fixing it, as many games as the team will blow again with the current bullpen.

How bout PARNELL,KUNZ,SCHEINDER AND CASTILLO'S CONTRACT 4 2 big contracts of TIGERS; ORDONEZ AND WILLIS.This will reduce TIGERS payroll plus give them 2 young pitcher's; also help the METS w/ a power right handed bat they need and a left handed pitcher then they dont need PEREZ.Then METS could sign O-DOG to play 2b and PUDGE to catch.
Posted by: jvent | January 21, 2009 at 08:15 PM
The only reason I say Porcello in the bullpen is that he already has 3 good pitches to rely on in his curve/breaking/fast balls and from what I hear he has a great pickoff move. You don't need much more as a reliever and acquiring MLB experience should only help ease his transition into a #1 starter the following year. Have him pitch in the AFL to help stretch out his arm in preparation for a 2010 starting rotation spot.
Posted by: Jimmy Jam | January 21, 2009 at 08:32 PM
I actually have a lot of faith in Rick Knapp
What he is doing with all the pitchers already is quite good
He already pointed out a mechanics/ balace flaw in Verlanders delivery
Hopefully he can redirect the pitching staff to its 2006 glory

"What about breeding Porcello for a relievers role this year than having him start the next? I know that would be rushing him and start the clock on his arbitration years, but it is an option."
NO NO NO NO NO.
Stupidest thing you could do. Porcello is the ONLY high upside arm in the Tigers system right now. He is pretty damn effective as a starter. Barring injury, he NEEDS to be getting groomed as a starter. And jerking him around b/w relieving and starting just isn't a good idea.
Posted by: melonis rex | January 21, 2009 at 09:01 PM
You just don't eff around with high upside arms like that. Porcello is way too integral a part of the Tigers' future to mess around like that.

Sign Beimeil, Cruz, and Cordero. Bullpen looks like this:
LR: Zach Miner RHP
LR: Bobby Seay LHP
MR: Joel Zumaya RHP
MR: Fernando Rodney RHP
MR: Joe Beimel LHP
SU: Chad Cordero RHP
CL: Juan Cruz RHP
That doesn't look too bad as long as Rodney and Zumaya have average seasons.

1. Sign Chad Cordero. Huge yes to this one. Low risk, high reward.
2. Go with an opening day rotation of Verlander-Bonderman-Galarraga-winners b/w Jackson/Miner/Robertson. Here's why I do this. I honestly think that Edwin will pitch himself out of the rotation before Miner or Robertson will. This is why I have blasted the Joyce/Jackson trade for the Tigers so many times. Loser goes to the pen.
3. Groom Willis to be the closer. Here's why. His mechanics have completely fallen apart. It will be much, MUCH easier for him to learn one plus pitch than it will be for him to learn 2-3 plus pitches. One pitch will fare him well as a closer. And, he's the type of pitcher who throws hard. Pitchers like that often find better success out of the pen.
4. Joe Beimel is an absolute waste of money for the Tigers. You don't spend on a LOOGY when your pen needs help from BOTH sides. Find a LH AAA starter with distinct platoon splits and have him be LOOGY.

Well I'll let you all in on the latest news right now. I'm not a Tigers fan.
Posted by: BlueALLday | January 21, 2009 at 09:47 PM
This is an obvious move. Can't believe nobody has said it.
Dumbrowski will obviously sign Eric Gagne! He is a known name and will probably work cheap on a 1 year deal.
Posted by: optionn | January 21, 2009 at 10:58 PM
I kinda like the idea of Willis as a closer/late inning guy, but I doubt that he is any better in one inning than he was in a few innings.
I agree that we should sign Beimel and Cordero, just replace Cruz with Lyon.
If Gagne comes here, I might jump off a cliff.
Posted by: TigerFan54 | January 21, 2009 at 11:10 PM
The first thing you can do to save the Tigers is fire Dave Dombrowski. He's the genius that traded away a bunch of young talent for Renteria, Willis, and Cabrera.
I seriously wonder if this guy wakes up everyday and thinks it is 2003. TIME TO WIN WITH THE FLORIDA MARLINS.
Posted by: Will Smiff | January 21, 2009 at 11:34 PM
Willis is a lost cause. We should have found a way to move him when we had a chance.
Posted by: dtigerman | January 21, 2009 at 11:40 PM
"Willis is a lost cause. We should have found a way to move him when we had a chance."
Tigers already had the chance dtigerman, for likewise lost cause Julio Lugo from Boston and Tigers may have even been able to talk them into eating the extra 4 million that Willis owed over 2009-10 over what Lugo is, now the Tigers have that LH reliever at least if they don't want to go out and get a real one like Biemel.
Posted by: johns | January 22, 2009 at 04:11 AM
Jeez, when you think about it, if the Tigers bullpen had actually been good last year, they would have gone from worst to first in their division.
Posted by: DCSportsGuy | January 22, 2009 at 06:30 AM
"I kinda like the idea of Willis as a closer/late inning guy, but I doubt that he is any better in one inning than he was in a few innings."
Yeah, he will be. Even if it is as a LOOGY, at least you're getting innings out of Willis. As I said, you only need one plus pitch to succeed as a closer, you need multiple to succeed as a starter.
And, looking at 2007, he held lefties to a .357 OPS, even though he had horrible overall stats. 2008 also had a great lefty OPS, even though he got absolutely bombed by righties(OPS over 1.000 v. RHB). D-Train will EASILY cut it as a LOOGY, if not a bona-fide closer.
Posted by: melonis rex | January 22, 2009 at 09:39 AM
I have a great idea for the Tigers. Why don't we go out and get someone like Dan Wheeler from the Rays. I heard the Rays might be willing to move him. He is only 31 and is coming off a 3.12 ERA, 0.99 Whip and he finished 26 games and had 13 saves. He is still under contract for another 2 years and only makes about 3 mil/season. I bet we could get him for a couple of minor league players. Maybe something like Brett Jacobson and Scott Green for Wheeler.
Posted by: ReyL | January 22, 2009 at 10:12 AM
ReyL
No!
Two middle-tier to upper-tier prospects (from a very depleted farm system) for a mediocre/ inconsistent reliever
We can't afford to keep trading away pitchers and farm hands!
Posted by: pskip13 | January 22, 2009 at 11:50 AM
Dan Wheeler fits Dave Dombrowski's philosophy of acquiring flukes really, really well. Especially when the contract suckkssss.
Dan Wheeler shouldn't cost more than a bag of balls.
