« Manny Ramirez Rumors: Saturday | Main | Varitek Met With Henry, Hopes To Return »
Matthew Leach of MLB.com believes the St. Louis Cardinals and right-handed starting pitcher Todd Wellemeyer are close to a deal to avoid arbitration.
This from Wellemeyer himself: "I know it's getting close, I'll tell you that much."
Wellemeyer, 30, went 13-9 with a 3.71 ERA in 2008.
Leach notes that deals might be close for Chris Duncan and Brad Thompson, too. General manager John Mozeliak said he would like to avoid arbitration with Duncan and Thompson, as well as Rick Ankiel and Ryan Ludwick.
Mozeliak is hopeful that none of the five players will actually go to arbitration. Ankiel is especially challenging given his short tenure as an outfielder, Leach writes.

Derrick goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch says that those talks are stalled until the deals are done, and Atlanta has put their search for an outfielder on hold.

It only means STL will signthe players. They can sill trade Ankiel, probably to the Yankees for Phil Hughes.

Wellemeyer is good. he might be even better. i would rather trade ludwick than ankiel. but hey, im no john mozeliak.

Do you guys think Ludwick was a one-year wonder or will he have another good year?

Interesting note here from Derrick Goold.
"The asking price the New York Yankees set for second baseman Robinson Cano when the Cardinals called about a deal: Adam Wainwright. The conversation did not last long"

Haha! Waino for Cano. I'd pledge my allegiance to Cubbie nation if that ever happened.

I love how Yankee's prospects and players are always overhyped. Cano and Melky Cabrera on any other team wouldn't have any near the same buzz.
Kennedy and Hughes are both good prospects, but on the Yankees they're 5 star prospects.

No.. that must be a misprint. maybe waino was the one saying "it didn't last long" maybe the cardinals finally realized they had a incompetent GM and are using wainwright to make all the decisions now.

Everyone seems to be missing one shocking detail of this article.
"Leach notes that deals might be close for Chris Duncan"
What? the only thing Chris Duncan needs is a bus ticket out of town.
