« Tadahito Iguchi Set To Join Chiba Lotte Marines | Main | Rangers Sign Francisco, Close With Vizquel »
According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, free agent lefty Randy Wolf rejected an offer from the Diamondbacks. Jon Garland did the same last week; Garland's offer apparently had two option years. Piecoro says the D'Backs have about $4-5MM left to spend this winter. Braden Looper is said to be next on the list.
Piecoro adds that the D'Backs have two arbitration-eligible players, Chad Qualls and Conor Jackson. They're closer to an agreement with Qualls than Jackson.

Everyone is hating on the D'backs.

could this be a precursor for a Dodger signing?
he might not be a favorable choice, but the rotation is short on experience.
he provides that plus 10+ wins.

Unless the offer is a lot less then what you are being offered by other teams why not take it. The Dbacks are a team one year out of having the best record in the NL now with that team all healthy (Byrnes, Upton) with the addition of Harren. And if the team falls Webb and Harren will take the heat where if they make a big run as the big addition you get a lot of credit.

Im not too up to date on the D-backs finances. Their payroll isnt high in fact its low mid-market in my opinion. Do people not show up for their games? How do they only have 5 mill to work with?

"And if the team falls Webb and Harren will take the heat where if they make a big run as the big addition you get a lot of credit."
I don't think anyone was blaming Webb and Haren for the DBacks not making the playoffs in '08. Yes, they slumped in a critical time, but they both picked it back up and were absolutely dominant. The blame was solely on the station-to-station offense, even with Dunn. And Hudson's injury didn't help either.
However, will people criticize the Haren trade if the DBacks don't make playoffs in '09-10? Absolutely, because it did take away quite a few cost-controlled pieces that could be used to obtain bats and/or could become above average everyday players (albeit all were blocked in the DBacks organization).

I think some of the core guys are arb-eligible and/or have big raises built into their contracts.

Melonis -- Don't the D-backs have a pretty strong farm system even after the Haren trade? And isnt Tracy still projected to be a big power threat? Being a Mets fan im not too up to date on their expectations outta young guys or their system

I'm not a DBacks fan.
DBacks have Scherzer, who will be in the rotation in '09, and they have their top prospect, Jarrod Parker. I'm not sure what they've got in terms of power bats though. Chad Tracy is almost 30. The DBacks do have quite a few draft picks this cycle though.

Hmm... theres somebody else i must be thinking of, or i could just be completely wrong. Yea i remember Scherzer and he had his coffee last year. BTW Melonis, who is your team anyway?

Here's Sickels' list of DBacks prospects, maybe you find the guy you were thinking of:

My team = A's.
We get really active in the rumor mill, then we die down.

Hey Metsknicksrutgers,
I am a Dodger fan, and my Grandpa is a D-Backs fan, so I follow the D-Backs quite closely as well. They have a decent farm system in terms of solid arms (especially power arms), but unfortunately traded away a lot of their OF and IF depth with the Haren trade. They gave away a lot more than most people realize. Giving away over 6 prospects in any trade will hurt a system.
As for Chad Tracy, he has slugged over .500 once (in 2005), and owns a .285BA, .343OBP, .461slugging and .804OPS career line. He doesn't really project, nowadays, to be more than a 25 homer threat, even when healthy, which has become a great cause for concern at only 30 years old.
I'd like to think a guy like Conor Jackson has more power potential than Tracy even.

I think the Mets or Dodgers will sign Wolf or Garland, but no team will get both.
Posted by: TripleHHH | January 20, 2009 at 01:27 AM
I'd think the Dodgers would be more likely to land Garland given that he'd fit in fine with the Dodgers in the weaker NL West (many more pitcher's parks = better numbers for Garland), AND he fits the bill of an innings eater - at the very least - which the Dodgers need more than just a body to fill a rotation spot.

It is strange that a place like Arizona, that has exploded over the years, and has a ton of people to market their product too, is in such bad shape financially. This team has a great young core of guys, and an absolutely beautiful stadium, state of the art. Arizona is a great place to live too, its a shame because if they actually had some money to throw around it wouldn't exactly be hard to lure free agents into beautiful Arizona to play in their gorgeous park with a core of guys like Webb, Haren, Scherzer, Upton, Conor Jackson, Stephen Drew and Chris Young.

The D-Backs would trade Tracy the first chance they get. As for the power bats, we have Mark Reynolds who had 28 HR but performed poorly down the stretch. He also broke Ryan Howard's strikeout record. Upton was a power bat down the stretch. Young and Dunn struck out to often.
