« Dodgers Make New Offer To Manny Ramirez | Main | Chad Cordero To Audition Again »
According to La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Twins have ended their pursuit of right-handed reliever Juan Cruz.
Cruz rejected the Twins' contract offer before talks ever evolved into the sign-and-trade stages, and it doesn't sounds like the club plans on making another run at him. Cruz, 30, posted a 2.61 ERA in 51 2/3 innings last season.
Neal suggests that the Twins might now focus their attention on free agent Chad Cordero, who threw for several teams on Wednesday.

Where is this guy going to go? The dbacks dont really need him, so im sure they wouldnt offer him a good contract. No team is going to give up the first round pick. And any sign and trade offer from another team is going to be lower because they have to trade to get him. I can him sitting out until the draft and then jumping on with a contender.

i agree with what you've said but i really dont see him waiting that long a player of his caliber should be in spring training right now. hopefully for the twins' sake this is a similar situation to the joe crede signing...if i remember correctly there were articles one day before the signing saying that the sides reached an impasse and he would not be playing for the twins in 2009. if juan cruz wants to play in 2009 he is going to have to lower his expectations a bit and hop on board with a serious playoff contender (the twins).

When healthy Cordero is probably just as effective a pitcher as Cruz anyway. I'm not sure what Cruz is looking for in a contract, but you'd probably only need to give Cordero a 1 year deal anyway. Next year hopefully we wont have that problem in the bullpen trying to find guys if Delaney and Slama continue their dominance at AA/AAA

I always thought it was funny when "a player of his caliber" is considered of any caliber other than 6th inning fodder after having a good year once every 3 years. Type-A should not apply to middle relievers.

The Dodgers should sign him for one year to set up Broxton. It would only cost a second round pick since they gave their first rounder for O. Hudson.

The Tigers should sign him for a similar deal to Lyon. This would be the bullpen then.
MR:
Ni/Bloom
Seay
Rodney
SU:
Zumaya
Cruz
CL:
Lyon
Would probably be the second best bullpen in the Central.

the Tigers still wouldnt have a legit closer. Being a mets fan i know how much that kills a team.

What determines a legit closer?

how about someone with a recent history of success in the closers role?

Cruz would be a solid sign for the Dodgers or Yankees who would give up much less in the way of draft picks as their first round picks are gone.

Alright, so Lyon isn't great, but he is still an upgrade over Todd Jones. And he got more fly balls than ground balls last year, which is great for CoPa.

I think the Braves should sign him. They had close to 9 million to play with before signing Anderson for 2.5 million. They could use his arm in the pen and they could afford to lose a 1st round pick. I think the pen would then be extremly solid. They could lock him in for 3 year deal.
