« Manny Ramirez Rumors: Tuesday | Main | Aramis Ramirez Hopes To Finish With Cubs »
11:08pm: Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times says the Dodgers and Manny have "agreed on the general parameters of a contract," the terms Heyman mentioned.
10:22pm: SI.com's Jon Heyman confirms that Manny is headed to L.A. to meet with McCourt. Heyman speaks of "optimism on all sides" and says they're discussing the same $45MM/two-year deal, with the opt-out after the first year.
9:37pm: T.J. Simers of the L.A. Times spoke with Manny on Tuesday afternoon and collected a few nice quotes. Keep in mind that this conversation took place a few hours before tonight's events:
"I'm happy in L.A. I like my teammates and had a great time," said Ramirez. "The fans were so good to me; they treated me the best anywhere in my career. And now I think we're close [to a deal]. ... Tell everyone Mannywood is coming."
9:16pm: Tony Jackson of the Los Angeles Daily News has provided excellent, accurate information throughout this entire saga. Here's an excerpt from his most recent blog post:
Manny IS on his way to Los Angeles tonight, just as Enrique Rojas reported on ESPN. Manny IS willing to accept some form of what the Dodgers offered him last Wednesday, a two-year, $45 million deal with $25 million the first year, $20 million the second year and an opt-out. That offer IS back on the table, even though it has been taken off the table last week. But there is no actual agreement in place YET, because Dodgers officials want to meet with Manny face to face, presumably tomorrow morning, before making this thing happen.
9:12pm: Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times has gathered a strong quote from Boras: "I assure you, we have no deal."
9:06pm: FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal weighs in:
Ramirez and the Dodgers have agreed to a two-year, $45 million contract, according to ESPN's Enrique Rojas. While that report eventually might be proven correct, it is premature.
8:41pm: ESPN.com's story now boasts the headline: "Sources: Manny, Dodgers closer to $45M deal," and Enrique Rojas has been removed as the author.
8:32pm: Will Selva, the anchor on staff for ESPNews, says Rojas' report is "false."
8:30pm: Ken Gurnick and Barry M. Bloom of MLB.com have a quote from Boras himself: "I'm still working on it, but it's yet to be finalized."
8:25pm: ESPN.com's Jayson Stark writes that "obstacles still remain to completing the contract."
8:24pm: ESPN.com has now removed the story from the front page.
8:22pm: It should be noted that ESPN.com's front page headline reads: "Manny To Dodgers: It's a Deal."
8:16pm: MLBTR just received this e-mail from Senior Editor of Yahoo! Sports, Steve Henson:
Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports just spoke to Scott Boras and a Dodger front-office official. Both said no agreement has been reached. Ned Colletti and Boras did speak today, but no real progress was made.
--Steve Henson
7:56pm: Will Selva, an anchor for ESPNews, is now saying that the network is still "trying to confirm" the report.
7:53pm: According to ESPN's Enrique Rojas, Manny Ramirez has agreed to a two-year, $45MM deal with the Dodgers.
Plenty more details to come...

The only thing that will make this whole ordeal even more entertaining is if:
A) He gets hurt and takes the Player Option.
B) The Dodgers still fail to make it to/win the Playoffs.
Game on.

ABOUT TIMEEEE
He probably realized no one else is going to offer him jack.
Now i can't wait till his drama he will cause during the year and if he has an opt out clause then he will for sure opt out.
This was worse than the steroids talks for Arod,Bonds,Clemens COMBINED
Well not really but its close.

Posted by: uww1 | March 03, 2009 at 08:01 PM
cheba,
you know there will be the same Player Option second year. Once it got put in, it won't get taken out. Especially when he wanted more money.

Where is the link?
Posted by: giantsrainman | March 03, 2009 at 08:02 PM
I am so SICK and TIRED of there being "We're so close" and then things falling through.
If Manny truly is a Dodger now, I am sooooooooo STINKING happy.
Now Colletti, all you have to do is trade Pierre, Hu, and another player or two for a solid pitcher =D
Posted by: MrBlake14 | March 03, 2009 at 08:03 PM
I hope it's true. Then maybe we won't have to hear about this waste of space every day.
Posted by: tebjr | March 03, 2009 at 08:03 PM
closest analogy would be Favre last NFL offseason. I still don't think it got blown up as big, but it probably was as annoying.
I was actually emotionally invested in this, though.

Favre was so much worse than Manny IMO.
It played like a soap opera.
Posted by: melonis rex | March 03, 2009 at 08:05 PM
Any money deferred? What's the deal with the terms? Can't judge the contract till we see all that...Wow Boras signed for this, after when he was originally offered the same deal, he said, "Let's see some serious offers." Haha

i dont know about this
how could they get a deal for the same amount that was just declined after McCourt said they would "start from scratch"
Boras has way too big of an ego LOL

Posted by: abcrazy4dodgers | March 03, 2009 at 08:16 PM
If this is true, you have to hand it to Colletti (or whoever else was directly involved in negotiations for the Dodgers). I am the first to criticize Colletti and point out decisions I don't agree with, but I feel that he handeled this like a pro. He never strayed from the Dodgers original offer and got the deal done. I know that some of you feel that the Dodgers overpaid, but this is Manny, a legit superstar. Such players come at a premium (a la CC and Tex). At the beginning of the offseason, everyone was predicting that it would take at least a 4/$100M deal to even talk to Manny, now the Dodgers (theoretically) sealed the deal for 2/$45M.
If you criticize someone's mistakes, you also have to acknowledge their accomplishments. And Ned, don't let it go to your head, even a broken clock is right twice a day!
Posted by: cutmeibleedblue | March 03, 2009 at 08:17 PM
I don't think McCourt wound up looking (totally) inept. We got Manny for 2/45. We could have bid against ourselves, and shockingly, I'm going into the season not completely hating Colletti.
Now sign Joe Beimel.
Posted by: BlueBlooded | March 03, 2009 at 08:18 PM
i would rather have dunn and dempster for 1 yr and the same money or a little less
Posted by: gunsnascar | March 03, 2009 at 08:19 PM
nobody wants to hear about that either alan.
Posted by: CubFanRaysaddict | March 03, 2009 at 08:20 PM
I don't believe it and I won't until Jon Heyman reports it. There is no reporter closer to Boras than Jon, and the LA press is all over the Dodgers front office. Neither have reported that Manny has signed. Where is Enrique Rojas been all winter?
Posted by: TALL THRILL | March 03, 2009 at 08:20 PM

Haha, gl with that.

"i would rather have dunn and dempster for 1 yr and the same money or a little less"
What!? First of all Dempster signed a multiyear deal with the Cubs, as far as I know no other team was even engaged in serious talks with him. Also, Dunn is a very good hitter a star, but Manny is one of the greatest right-handed hitters ever and a tested and true superstar. The Dodgers were lacking power and star-appeal, Manny brings both to the table, while Dunn only satisfies one half of the equation.
Posted by: cutmeibleedblue | March 03, 2009 at 08:22 PM
Manny prolly said yes, and was promptly told by Borras to go to time-out.
Posted by: abcrazy4dodgers | March 03, 2009 at 08:24 PM
That Rojas article is a mess. A source close to the talks informed espn.com that Manny had signed, but the article was written by espndeportes.com writer Rojas, with information from espn.com's Jerry Crasnick. If Crasnick got the info why wouldn't he have broken it?
Posted by: Grizzlyfox | March 03, 2009 at 08:24 PM
is this story of manny signing bs or true

I don't know who said that Manny was in the top 30 hitters of all time. I said that Manny is one of the greatest RIGHT-HANDED HITTERS of all time. You can insult the Dodgers if that makes you feel better. I was simply shooting down a lousy signing suggestion that you made.
Posted by: cutmeibleedblue | March 03, 2009 at 08:34 PM
I had the Giants and Dodgers equal - with whomever signed Manny as the difference maker, frankly I was hoping he'd sign with the Giants.
Looks like its the Dodgers in the NL West... still can't beat the Phillies!
Posted by: FyreKnight | March 03, 2009 at 08:35 PM
the mlb teams should boycott manny ramirez in 09 like they did to bonds in 08 and then players wouldnt play their cards this long and hard and try to screw fans as well as teams with higher prices
Posted by: gunsnascar | March 03, 2009 at 08:35 PM
Seems like some conjunction misuse.
Posted by: PWHjort | March 03, 2009 at 08:35 PM
Boras is negotiating for a 5% stake in Citigroup to be added to the deal.
Posted by: vtadave | March 03, 2009 at 08:38 PM
Well that was an interesting half hour.
Posted by: Cardsfan387 | March 03, 2009 at 08:40 PM
An article on dodgers.com says that they are still hung up on what money is to be deferred but that they are still close. Boras directly addressed the ESPN Deportes report when he made the comment that Drew quoted above:

This is worse than a soap opera. Now that A-Rod is hurt, Hank is calling Borass to bring in ManNY home to the Bronx! Go Yankees

"This is worse than a soap opera. Now that A-Rod is hurt, Hank is calling Borass to bring in ManNY home to the Bronx! Go Yankees"

Swisher? j/k j/k. Some utility guy.
Does it matter. Get Manny, trade Nady to the Dodgers. Game over.
Posted by: melonis rex | March 03, 2009 at 08:52 PM
"Haha.. is Manny going to play third base or is Matsui?"
A Beltre will play 3rd base until A-Rod gets back. What we need is clutch at bats and that is why ManNY will be with the Yankees in 2009.
Posted by: DonnieBaseball | March 03, 2009 at 08:53 PM
"7:53pm: According to ESPN's Enrique Rojas, Manny Ramirez has agreed to a two-year, $45MM deal with the Dodgers."
7:55 pm: This just in: Enrique Rojas has been brutally beaten by a group of individuals wearing MLBTR t-shirts. ESPN officials stated that they did not attempt to ward off the angry mob and simply added, "Rojas deserved that ass-whooping, he is a douchebag." Officials also added that if Rojas survived the beating he would be fired immediately.
Posted by: cutmeibleedblue | March 03, 2009 at 08:54 PM
Yeah right, like the Dodgers would want Nady. Especially at the asking price the Yankees would be posting for Nady.
And I can't ask/state this enough, haven't the Yankees ALREADY signed the maximum number of Type A and B free agents that they can?
Posted by: MrBlake14 | March 03, 2009 at 08:54 PM
HAAA. Poor Rojas. He will be missed....NOT!
Posted by: MrBlake14 | March 03, 2009 at 08:56 PM
MrBlake,
That story was refuted. The original post for max Type A/B was amended, and the Yanks technically still could. Although they have publicly said that they won't be signing any more 'non-spring' invites.
Posted by: NuschlerBall212 | March 03, 2009 at 08:57 PM
MrBlake14 - MLB has confirmed that teams (ANY TEAM, including the Yankees) can sign up to 8 (eight) type A and B free agents. Stop asking the same question and do some of your own research for a change.
Posted by: DonnieBaseball | March 03, 2009 at 08:57 PM
"Yeah right, like the Dodgers would want Nady. Especially at the asking price the Yankees would be posting for Nady."
I agree, I don't want Nady on the Dodgers. If the Dodgers don't sign Manny, Pierre will likely play LF (ugh!)
MrBlake, what do you know about Mitch Jones? He has been tearing it up in ST games so far. He seems like a power-hitting LFer, but mlb.com doesn't have any stats on him and I had never heard of him before (non-roster invitee?). I would like to see what the Dodgers do with him if he continues to produce this well and they do indeed sign Manny.
Posted by: cutmeibleedblue | March 03, 2009 at 09:01 PM

Manny is tied for #22 all-time in adjusted OPS, so I think placing him in the top 30 isn't that outrageous.

Thanks guys. And DonnieBaseball, I'd appreciate it if you didn't speak so condescending towards me. It was a simple question, and didn't need an insulting sounding response. Thank you.
And FYI, I do plenty of my own research and if you read my posts, I have some of the more thought-out, researched posts on here. I thought the number was 8, but wasn't sure, and was too lazy to go searching, so I figured someone else would have that number up front.
Posted by: MrBlake14 | March 03, 2009 at 09:04 PM
weruntheeast,
Thanks, appreciate that!
Dude looks promising! Real power! Dodger fans should check out this link. I had never even heard of him but he already has 3 HRs and 8 RBIs in 8 ST games. I never even heard of him.
Posted by: cutmeibleedblue | March 03, 2009 at 09:06 PM
Mitch Jones has been tearing it up in Spring Training so far.
Here is what I know, drafted by the Yankees, he is something like 31 or 32 years old, and he has decent pop (.488 career slugging in the minors).
Although his biggest problem is hitting for an average. He may put up great power numbers (he has hit 20+ homers in the minors every single year since being drafted), but has hit over .300 only once (2007 with Las Vegas).
Posted by: MrBlake14 | March 03, 2009 at 09:09 PM
I had heard of him before, and he has been a career minor league guy. As I said, the biggest blow against him is that he has had trouble hitting for a high average.
Although in his stints with the Dodgers system so far, he has been solid:
2007 - .303/.402/.697, 19 homers, 60 RBI's in only 185 AB's
2008 - .275/.347/.595, 16 homers, 45 RBI's in 200 AB's
