« Marlins' New Stadium Approved | Main | A's Announce Bob Geren Extension »
According to Ben Shpigel of the New York Times, the Mets reassigned starter Freddy Garcia to minor league camp today. Garcia softened his stance on the minors, as he'll work at extended Spring Training or else head to Triple A as a member of the Mets organization. The move solidifies Livan Hernandez as the Mets' fifth starter, at least for now.

I think it was a smart move to keep Garcia. He won't meet those incentives that give him $6.5M. The most he'd get is $1.5M if he's added to the 40-man roster. He won't get more than that anywhere else and no one is going to give him a guaranteed roster spot.
If he's improved by midseason, the Mets would be better off having him start games than some of the guys they've trotted out there the fast 2 years.

this is a good move...let Garcia pitch in the minors and prove himself again...if any pitcher gets injured or need rest in the middle of the season, it's always good to have options in the minors.

Freddie Garcia will be like Pedro last year. This is his first season trying to pitch after arm surgery and it is Pedro's second, where he should be drastically improved. Makes no sense.

Not that I like Garcia but I can not for the life of me figure out why teams like Livan Hernandez. He isn't, nor ever was, good. Why waste a #5 spot on him rather than taking a chance at any young arm in the system or something.

I never imagined that Livan Hernandez would be the fifth starter for a World Series contender at the start of this winter..

They're not rushing any of their young talent for similar reasons to the Rays not rushing David Price. You're helped minimally now, but you might get killed in the years to come. Come on, if you were a contender and you had the choice to pitch David Price every fifth day now, would you do it? I figure I would. Price has to be much better than Niese, Gee, or whoever the Mets have in the wings. And their fifth starter situation isn't cut and dry either.

"He's Stuff Was Looking Great In The WBC"
He pitched against the Netherlands. Their players would be lucky to make a AAA bench.
