Barry Bonds Refuses To Retire

Barry Bonds attended last night's Giants game, and provided his typical nonsensical comments.  Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News has a transcript.  Baggarly learned that Bonds is not retired, and his offseason injury was related to his quad rather than his hip.

Comments

Bonds probably will never officially retire so he can say something to the effect of "I never retired, the media ran me out of baseball" during his HOF speech.

The sad thing is, it will be partly true, also.

Dammit Bonds! Go Away!! Your the games biggest disgrace since the black sox scandal

That transcript is hilarious.

Bonds is a genius. He will claim is he a free agent and available well into his 70's and not be eligible for the HOF. Then, when most reporters from this era are dead, he may have a chance of getting elected. I don't know, maybe it will work.

"Dammit Bonds! Go Away!! Your the games biggest disgrace since the black sox scandal"

Its dumb that you single out Bonds. Why don't you say the same things about Mark McGwire, Chuck Finley, Randy Velarde, Wilson Alvarez Bret Boone, Juan Gonzalez, Ivan Rodriguez, Miguel Tejada Lenny Dykstra, Roger Clemens Andy Pettitte, Brian Roberts, Jay Gibbons, Gary Matthews Jr., Rick Ankiel, Troy Glaus, Scott Schoeneweis, Matt Williams, Jose Guillen, Ismael Valdez, Magglio Ordonez, Alex Rodriguez, Mike Piazza, etc.?

Is it because he was better?

No offense Tim, but how are those comments nonsense? They arent very linear but he doesnt really say anything that doesnt make any sense.

Roger Clemens was a MUCH bigger cheater than Barry Bonds.

None of it really makes any sense at all, actually.

sounded like he said a whole lot of nothing which is probably the "nonsense" Tim was referring to.

anytime Bonds' name comes up now youre just going to hear the same recycled opinions about cheating, being a jerk, should just retire, collusion, hall of fame, blacklist, why single him out, etc. it's quite evident that MLB is making a public relations step to move beyond this steroid cloud. Barry is simply not coming back because of this. Once everyone comes to terms with this, we can finally be done with his obligatory mention each season.

Forgot Jose Canseco and Sammy Sosa...
But I think a team like the Mariners should pick up Bonds. I personally think he is better than 40% of the players currently playing. I'll take 15 home runs with a .230 average at a DH spot for league minimum any day over paying another guy 5 million more to barely do better. It's not like their farm system is great either...

Not going to get into who is a bigger cheat amongst the steroid users, but Bonds is still the biggest disgrace with Clemens a close second and Palmeiro a close third. Beyond being a general jerk and a poor excuse for a human being, I've never seen someone so loved by one group of people (ignorant 'I-refuse-to-believe-it' Giants fans) and absolutely HATED by everyone else. Like manny in boston, its the franchise and the fans that created that monster, not just the needles.

"No offense Tim, but how are those comments nonsense? They arent very linear but he doesnt really say anything that doesnt make any sense."

I want to know the same thing.

"No offense Tim, but how are those comments nonsense? They arent very linear but he doesnt really say anything that doesnt make any sense."

And, before someone makes the "even if he got signed, he wouldn't hit/would slump initially because he hasn't played ball in so long" BS argument, I see quite a few "big names" not hitting right now and getting into insanely slow starts. Hell, I see two on the same team.

Did you notice how many times he said "I want to go and watch the game now..."

Sometimes reporters are ignorant.

And the person who says that Bonds should "go away" is equally as ignorant.

Are you saying he isn't allowed to go to a game? This sure wasn't Bonds trying to get in front of a camera. It is the media that won't leave him alone.

One of those teams that's struggling to OPS .700 right now should sign Bonds and bench one of their non-hitting entities. Especially if said entities are OF/DH types.

Everybody in the '20's threw spitballs and everybody in the '90's shot steroids. What's the difference? It was an unfair foreign influence that was bad for the game, everyone at the time(s) was/were doing it and now it's over. Stop blaming them, everybody was doing it.

I dont think Bonds should walk away from baseball, clearly the man still loves it and while he is getting on in years, I dont think a few more at bats would hurt anything.

What he should do is sign a AAA deal with a team for peanuts, hit some bombs and by the end of the season maybe he could get a few more at bats in the show.

I dont think he will be super effective but he could probably knock out a few dingers, have some fun and what not but I dont think there is a major league team that needs him right at this minute. But if he was willing to play in the minors, I am betting there's an attendance struggling team with a DH spot somewhere for him.

doesn't matter if he refuses to retire. If no team wants him then he is forced to retire. Unless he wants to play in the Indy leagues or over seas

whatever... mlb used him to make a ton of money and now acts like it was all his decision. they made a ton of money off the homerun race and him breaking the alltime hr record... why all of a sudden is HE the bad guy? Guess what? A-Rod, Jeter, Posada, and Pettitte took steroids, too.

"biggest disgrace?" are you kidding me? that's like calling every ball manufacturer in the deadball era an "embarrassment to the game." the steroid era is one of MANY regrettable eras in baseball.

Yeah, it happened. People need to just register that it wasn't cheating, because it wasn't against the rules of baseball.

Ethically shady, but not against the rules.

jeter and posada? i doubt it they didnt really put up power numbers, in fact jeters best year home run wise might be this year, so far. Andy did hgh slightly different but still currently illegal although not at the time.

Anyway, steroids were not illegal in baseball untill the start of the 2005 season, so the real people at fault were not the players but the league for allowing the steroid culture to exist.
Also, also I'd just like to point out that while steroids do make it easier to build muscles, the player still has to put in the work in the weight room for them to have any affect. Also, steroids certainly don't help your hand-eye coordination so even when using steroids you have to have the natural ability to hit the ball.

"his typical nonsensical comments" ????

What was so "nonsensical" about him last night? I thought he was well spoken, in good spirits and made a nice showing for himself.

"Dammit Bonds! Go Away!! Your the games biggest disgrace since the black sox scandal"

That would be Roger Clemens, buddy. I really think that Bonds gets it tougher because he wasn't too nice to the media for a long time, and he's African-American. What Clemens has done is significantly worse, in my opinion.

Bonds could make for an AWESOME offensive to addition to some team that is getting subpar production from it's DH spot.

What did Clemens do that was significantly worse than Bonds?

This ear had lots of guys on roids, i know. hes the disgrace because he refuses to just hang it up and admit its over, it clearly is over because nobody wants to give him a chance. Its one thing to roid, its another thing to treat fans like morons, continue to act like you didnt do anything thing and whore yourself out to the media every chance you can find.

Its not cause hes black, its because he was the best. Clemens gets it just as bad, maybe worse then Bonds. People can play the race card if they want to, fact is when you hit over 700 home runs and then get caught cheating, the media circus will follow you everywhere, not just because your black.

If im ignorant for wanting this guy to go away then fine, i can live with that label, but i cant live with him and him trying to put up some kind of fruitless battle to sign on a major league team when clearly his welcome has been worn completely out.

im not even against bonds going to the hall of fame really, thats going to be tough for him anyway considering Pete Rose still isnt in, a guy who most certainly should be at this point and was, i think, a better ball player then bonds was.

Im just sick of hearing him on a weekly basis reminding the world he refuses to go quietly, theres nothing left to prove other then you might be a clown for some under .500 team to sell some more tickets

The Giants should re-sign him. They owe it to him, at least.

I watched this interview with Kruk and Kuip live last night, and I have to say - This was the most friendly, smiling Bonds I have seen in 15 years in the bay area. He was personable, engaged, and seemed actually happy. He can be surly when he doesn't want to be the center of attention, sure, but last night he represented himself well. He showed love for the bay area, the Giants, and genuine affection for the fans. He waved to the fans underneath the booth that continued to shout his name, and seemed happy.

I enjoyed years and years of watching him play, and nothing can take that away. I stood under homerun 757 as it landed in McCovey Cove, and I wish Bonds nothing but the best for him and his family.

Oops, slight amendment - I didn't see the beat writer interview - I watched the 2nd and 3rd inning of him on TV with the play by play guys.

"his ear had lots of guys on roids, i know. hes the disgrace because he refuses to just hang it up and admit its over, it clearly is over because nobody wants to give him a chance."

Oh, okay, so he is a disgrace because he won't just give up when everybody is against him? Is that what you are going to teach your kids? When everybody is up against you, trying to stop you from doing what you want to do, you just act like a p*ssy and quit? And if not, you're a disgrace?

"People can play the race card if they want to, fact is when you hit over 700 home runs and then get caught cheating, the media circus will follow you everywhere, not just because your black."

Remind me, when did Bonds get caught cheating?

"Remind me, when did Bonds get caught cheating?"

Bonds admitted to Congress that he had taken steroids a couple years ago, but he also claimed that he had done it unknowingly, believing that the substances were legal.

I still think that Bonds' personality and race play more of a factor in the way that he's treated by the media than anything he's actually done wrong.

Otherwise, guys like Clemens would get WAY more crap from the media. Conveniently, you almost never hear media guys panning Clemens. Let's wonder why..

'Bonds is a genius. He will claim is he a free agent and available well into his 70's and not be eligible for the HOF. Then, when most reporters from this era are dead, he may have a chance of getting elected. I don't know, maybe it will work.''

Interesting thought. I really did not think of it that way.

This is a complete aside, but B Fu mentioned that Chuck Finley was one of the players busted for steroid use. I know there was a big issue with his wife trying to pour dirt on him, but I didn't see him implicated anywhere. Am I wrong?

I saw him on the tube last night at the Giants game. Must have been trying to get on t.v, show all the gm's and fans that he is still out there. I dont dislike Bonds. In fact, I thought he was a damn great hitter, roids or no roids, but his accomplishments as a player have been tarnished by the decade and all the court drama.

"Otherwise, guys like Clemens would get WAY more crap from the media. Conveniently, you almost never hear media guys panning Clemens. Let's wonder why.."

okay, lets wonder why. maybe because clemens doesnt insist on making a further spectacle of himself because he is SO guilty like bonds. maybe it would be in the better interest of bonds to follow Clemens example, keep his mouth shut or learn how to say the glorious phrase that every guilty person gets the luxury of saying in this country, "no comment"

news crews eat up the guy that wont shut up, thats why bonds gets more coverage then clemens, which i would refute even that. clemens isnt giving the media anything further to keep him in the spot light

I didn't read the article or all the comments but on the radio this morning I heard a quote from bonds. He said something like: "people say you're different from your playing days. That's because I created this persona that is bonds. People didn't come to see me play baseball. People came to see me as a character, not as a baseball player."

Hah. Really, barry? Really?

""Dammit Bonds! Go Away!! Your the games biggest disgrace since the black sox scandal"

i agree completely. im not a bonds fan but why the league continues to balckball him while letting giambi, tejeda, arod, etc..play is beyond me and ridiculous

HE CAN PLAY AND PLUS CAN GIVE 20+ HRS SOO SOME1 GIVE HIM A CONTRACT B/C THE GIANTS ARE MOVING FORWARD WITH THE YOUNG AND NOT THE OLD.....MAYBE CANT HELP BIG PAPI FIND THE POWER HE ONCE HAD

Spit isn't an illegal drug. People forget that steroid users not only cheated the game and the fans, they broke the law. Pete Rose broke the law and was banned from baseball. Bud should give known steroid users the same treatment.

Actually, Pete Rose didn't break the law. Gambling is legal. All he broke was the CBA at worst, if anything.

The only thing nonsensical here is that you are to moronic to realize that he just wants to be left alone and avoid bad press like this post. It's laughable that you have to appeal to the masses to fit in, if he said something nonsensical in this interview please explain it to me. All I see is a man who is tired of everyone attempting to exploit his every word and ruin his legacy even more. You lost my respect today Timmy. ~762

It does not get any worse than that.

Bonds is being blackballed. No question.

BUTTTTT, Bonds comes with a ego twice the size of his head. Is a black hole in the club house. Can't play the field, that takes out the entire NL.

I saw Clemens like a week ago and I wanted to boo. But I would of lost my job so yeah.

I wish Bonds would go away (perhaps to the Moon or Mars, lol) and never to be heard from again. I can't stand the stupid bigot. MLB would be by far better off without Bonds. "IF" the Giants were to sign him, I think other teams should boycott until he goes away.

When did Bonds speak to congress about steroids?

If you read his grand jury testimony he admitted to taking the cream and the clear thinking they were supplements like flax seed.

The ironic thing is the pitcher, Clay Hensley, who gave up hr 755 had been suspended for steroids. Now that is funny.

"continue to act like you didnt do anything thing and whore yourself out to the media every chance you can find."

Continuing to act like he didn't do anything is keeping him out of jail. You would do the same thing. Also, did you notice in that transcript when he told the media he didn't want to chat with them and that he wanted to get to his seat about 72 times? He, by no means, has sought out the media.

I'll say this, as I've said a hundred times before, if your father was as sorely mistreated by the media as Bobby Bonds was, you would feel the same way that Barry does about them. He never played nice with them and they are the reason he gets a bad rap. Name me a teammate of Bonds (besides Jeff Kent...he rubbed everyone the wrong way) that has come out publicly to bash bonds...
