Rosenthal On Sheffield, Repko, McPherson

A look at Ken Rosenthal's column from yesterday afternoon...

  • The Marlins chose Ross Gload over Frank Catalanotto, but are still considering signing Cat for the minimum now that he's been released.
  • The Braves are not interested in bringing back Gary Sheffield.  Meanwhile, Joel Sherman of the New York Post believes the Mets (as well as the Phillies and Reds) have an eye on Sheffield.
  • Sheffield is apparently the only right-handed hitter on the Phillies' radar.  Rosenthal learned that the Rockies' asking price for Jeff Baker is high.
  • The Braves almost made a deal for Dodgers outfielder Jason Repko, but backed off recently.
  • The Yankees will pass on Dallas McPherson, but the Giants may consider him.
  • The Yanks don't seem desperate to move Melky Cabrera.  They've received multiple calls on him but Rosenthal says "the team will only move him for the right price."

I'd heard the Braves-Repko rumor before. I though to myself, "Wow, I'm very glad Wren didn't pull the trigger on that." Makes no sense. Ya, that's exactly what we need, another AAAA outfielder with a 330 career OBP. We've got none of those, right?

It appears as if Sherman is no fan of Sheffield either and the Yankees ever so quickly diced the idea of bringing him back for an encore visit.. Smart move.

My favorite part of Sherman's view on the new Yankee stadium:

"the only channel allowed on in the clubhouse is the organization's propaganda-laden house organ?"

With regards to the clubhouse have 5 TV's and all being onto the Yankee's YES channel. That was hilarious.

I think the Yankees are making a big mistake by passing on McPherson. A platoon of Dallas and Ranson could provide at least league average offense and better then average power at the hot corner until Rodriguez's return. Berroa who will most likely get the last roster spot is a waste of space with no upside whatsoever.

with a bench of swisher, cabrera, molina, berroa, it just doesn't match up.

maybe mcpherson instead of berroa, but then ransom would be the only one that could sub up the middle. not ideal flexibility.

maybe someone pays the right price for melk?

his bat would play well at YSIII

The problem with that is Berroa really doesnt play worthwile defense at any position. If Pena gets the last spot then i agree with you he provides defense flexability up the middle, though i doubt he will hit. If Dallas gets the last spot and a situation arises where an infielder goes down Rasom slides over to the position and Dallas would take over 3rd base until Alex returns.

I'm failing to see the "upside" you guys are speaking about when it comes to McPherson right now. He hit .067 for the Marlins in spring training going 1-15! He's now 28 years old and has a career line of .245/.298 with 126 k's in 371 ab's. Yes, he has power...if he actually hits the ball. But I don't think the Yankees are nuts for not seeing this kid as "the answer".

I'm not a Berroa fan either...but this guy has more versatility and at least has had some success at the MLB level and a good spring.

i'd like to see the giants bring Mcpherson in, but not at a guaranteed 25 man roster spot. Sandoval & Ishikawa have shown enough to deserve the chance to start. Barring a move to bring in a proven player who is remarkably better, I think they should go with the two for the beginning. Mcpherson would be a nice insurance policy to call up from fresno, along with Jesus Guzman...

I still find it hard to believe the Yankee's don't take a chance on this guy...or the padres don't open up a roster spot.

spring training stats are usally meaningless but the upside i refer to is the fact that hes 27 and has a 970 career OPS in the minors. Last you he went 275/379/618 with 42 hrs in AAA. Im not talking about the guy like hes the savior of the season or anything just saying he could be a platoon partner for Ransom. His "upside" is likely greater than anything Berroa would provide since Berroa really does nothing well

“The Yanks don't seem desperate to move Melky Cabrera. They've received multiple calls on him but Rosenthal says "the team will only move him for the right price."”

Lets see

“Would you be interested in something revolving around Gary Sheffield for maybe, Cabrera?”

“Would you be interested in something revolving around Geoff Jenkins for maybe, Cabrera?”

“Would you be interested in something revolving around Gary Matthews Jr for maybe, Cabrera?”

“Would you be interested in something revolving around Juan Pierre for maybe, Cabrera?”

“Hello, me again. Ok, you didn’t like Sheffield, but how about Nate Robertson or Dontrell Willis for Cabrera?”

Yes, I can see “multiple calls”.

Oh wait, forgot one

“Hey, we really don’t want to start Anderson and Wise. What type of return you looking for on Cabrera?”

Oh, and as far as McPherson, don’t believe the hype. The three locations where he posted the strong lines, also happen to be three locations which are extremely hitter friendly. (Arkansas, Salt Lake City and Rancho Cucamonga) Take a look back at all the Angels prospects coming up the last few years where it was said they had such a strong system. You will probably find that none of them are coming close to what their minor league numbers point to being possible, and the best of the bunch (Kotchman) is right around League Average with the bat.

Really, there is little to no upside in Dallas. He might be an ok emergency fill-in, but nothing more.

42 homers is 42 homers, no matter how hitter-friendly the league. Not saying he deserves to be a regular or that he can ever even be that good, but 42 homers makes you a useful player, even if you're Dave Kingman. And SuzysMan, your 10:45 was one of the funniest things I've read all week.

I'd definitely take Melky over Wise/Anderson in center. Offer them Lillibridge for Melky and a low level guy or something, that deal would make so much freaking sense for both teams.

I don't know, I really think McPherson has ran out of chances. Even with his monster numbers in AAA, he was still striking out at an EXTREMELY high clip (37.5%). He does have some serious power, but he simply doesn't make enough contact to be a solid MLB hitter. In each of his past two stints in AAA, he's posted subpar batting averages (.275 and .250, respectively) in spite of high BABIP's (.340 in each year).

I just see little reason to believe that McPherson is capable of making enough contact in the majors.

You are looking at Russell Branyan with less patience, slightly less pop and an inability to stay healthy. Branyan has seen what, 8 clubs the last 8 years? Emergency fill-in, nothing more – no matter how many home runs he has hit against inferior pitching in hitter friendly locations at an advanced age.

"no matter how many home runs he has hit against inferior pitching in hitter friendly locations at an advanced age."

That seems like a pretty solid way to sum up McPherson's 2008 performance.

just love the reporting by Rosendolt: "According to someone not with the Giants, the Giants could be interested in McPherson because they apparently showed interest [prior to the 2008 season, even though their situation now is radically different at 3rd and 1st base.]"

Weak.

I think the Yankees are making a big mistake by passing on McPherson. Why act as if Dallas is some sort of super human player. He hit a mere .263/.318 against righties. Berroa offers a little more versatility.

What world do we live in where the "potential" to do something is greater than someone who's done something on the mlb level already? Berroa may never be what he was his rookie season, but at least he's got experience and has acheived some level of success. What has McPhereson done? A career .245/.298 vs Berroa's .260/.305? I would rather carry a player w/ a weak bat and versatility rather than a week bat who can only play 3B against righties.

No thanks on McPherson....

We have enough underachieving here in Fresno. Sans Fresno State Baseball of course. The Giants need nothing that this guy has to offer.
