Odds And Ends: Atkins, Ortiz, Bedard

Some links for your Friday morning...

So let me get this straight. Ortiz has been horrible for 1/3 of the season, and only now are they considering checking his eyes?

"On the Newberg Report Jamey Newberg sees Elvis Andrus as the leader of great Rangers teams to come. Newberg passes along a comment from Baseball America's Jim Callis: Andrus would be "in the mix" for the second overall pick in this year's draft if he were eligible."

Yeah, I think that sounds about right, although Andrus would be at the very top of the list with guys like Ackley, Matzek and Crow.

He's shown some impressive hitting ability for a 20-year-old skipping AAA, posting a .277/.325/.413 line and a .135 ISO that's wayy out of line with his .086 career ISO in the minor leagues.

Considering that hitting ability, his plus speed (9/10 SB), and his fantastic defense (+17.7 UZR/150 this season), and he looks like one of the best young shortstops in the game going forward.

i was thinking exactly the same things, c7cxk. and he wasn't himself last year, either. and he's getting a little older.

Seattle would you tank already please? Phils fans want 4 months of Bedard, not 2 months

"[Pirates president Frank Coonelly] even says he expects the Pirates to contend."

Frank, you're holding your newspaper upside down.

"Frank, you're holding your newspaper upside down."

To be fair, the Pirates have a +8 run differential, good enough for seventh in the NL, although its fourth in the division.

They're still going in the right direction, although trading away arguably their best power hitter surely can't help.

Something tells me this "Ortiz vision problem" is nothing but a premise for him to go on an extended DL.

Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that Pirates president Frank Coonelly maintains the team hasn't given up on 2009. He even says he expects the Pirates to contend.

oh....oh jeez... man

AH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Who in there right mind would trade for Atkins? Even when he does hit well, it's inflated by his home numbers. My guess is the Cubs will be dumb enough to give up good prospects for him to replace Ramirez.

Ortiz has a slow bat problem.

As somebody who has worn glasses for a long time, I can tell you you really have no idea the first time the problem crops up that anything was wrong. Maybe its different for somebody whose eyes are declining as they age versus somebody like me who needed them in grade school, but I can tell you in hindsight I probably needed glasses for several years before I actually got them.

I don't find it unreasonable to think it has gone a while before he got a vision test. Routine ones only come up once every year or two, and when you're trying to diagnose a hitting problem I imagine it starts with "does everything feel alright?" and then turns into hours of reviewing tape. Hell, it's possible they saw something in the tapes they worked on correcting even though it wasn't the problem.

Maybe it is and maybe it isn't the problem right now, but boy could blurry vision ever destroy your ability to identify pitches. I'm not a Red Sox fan; has he been swinging at bad pitches or has he been late swinging at good pitches? Both could be related to age, but chances are only one would be related to vision.

Like the Mets and Delgado I think the Red Sox need to start planning a life without Ortiz.

The only thing the man is being paid a tonne of money to do is hit the ball and he's doing none of it. He cant, run, he cant play in the field, he cant do anything but hit and now thats gone too.

Im friends with a lot of Red Sox fans and near all of them have this unconditional yet delusional view that "nah he will snap out of it" but its near the middle of June now and the man has ONE homerun in 187 at bats and only 20 RBI's with an average of .187. Hell, his only homer came off a non major league ready rookie pitcher having a horrible inning.

If the Red Sox want to make the playoffs this season, make a move now for Gonzalez, Dunn or someone else thats capable of actually producing.

You know something is wrong when Rocco Baldelli has 49 plate appearances and more homers than Ortiz.

I know the man is a fan super favourite but its time to move on.

Hmmm, im starting to wonder if we will even get rid of him now. There is talk that he loves it here in Seattle, then Z says that we are going to wait to see if we can turn this around and compete in our crappy division. I would love to sign Bedard to a long term deal. I know a lot of Mariners Fans and sports talk here in Seattle would say otherwise..... But I would love to keep him. Even better, I would love to trade him and get the prospects, but also have him back at the end of the year. That would be my ideal situation.

Ortiz is going to be fine. If he gets his wrist healthy we will see the old Ortiz next year. His bat speed is gone, so to try to compensate, he is starting sooner, which causes him to chase high fastballs and be way out in front of breaking balls. There is a chance his wrist never fully heals, but if it does, he is going to be completely fine. That is my take on the situation at least.

I think that Mariners players are very content with the new front office and coaching staff. It would benefit the M's to sign Bedard to an extension. How much are teams willing to pay for him? With the market expected to be similar to last years I would say that 3YR/45M or 4YR/60M would be reasonable. He is posting a beautiful; 2.37ERA, 60.2IP, 18BB and 61K's. Its obvious that some fans in Seattle are still upset about the 5 for 1 deal that brought Bedard to the M's and take out their anger on Bedard. After all Erik didn't make the trade he's just a player. Now that he is healthy it would be wise for the M's to resign him. With Batista and Washburn money coming off the books they can definitely afford to keep this ace around.

nrmax:

Ive sprained my wrist badly 3 times and broken it once.

Now Im 30 years old and I have to take Advil every day because Ive developed tendonitis and arthritis in that wrist.

So youre correct.
