Reds Seek Bats

Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports reports that the Reds are actively seeking right-handed hitting, especially after losing out on Mark DeRosa to the rival Cardinals. Here are a few options for the Reds, who could improve at third base, shortstop and left field:

  • They have considered dealing for Josh Willingham.
  • Ty Wigginton could fit their needs as well.
  • Adding Matt Holliday would be huge for the Reds, but he'd command the biggest return of all.
  • Gary Matthews Jr. could fit in Cincy if the Angels are willing to pay a considerable portion of his contract. The Angels would likely want relief help in return.
  • Since the Red Sox may be prepared to eat a considerable portion of Julio Lugo's salary, the Reds could consider dealing for him and asking for Boston to pay most of his $9MM salary.

The reds can have Lugo for 5 pre-shattered maple bats.

1- GMJ and Lugo are both awful. They're not going to "improve" anything. Leave them with their respective teams, please.

2- Why hasn't Stubbs been called up yet? Why is Taveras getting playing time?

I hope Jocketty is smarter than Dayton Moore. "Hey, I'm Dayton Moore! I'm gonna give up my second best reliever for a good glove/mediocre bat guy!"

You Know, good old Walk Jockety may be the biggest sucker in BB if Boston can convince him to take on Lugo and pay a dime over league minimum, much less give up anything over a has been 27YO stuck at A Ball for the last 3 years in return.

No telling, Jim Bowden ran this team and they are thinking they have a chance, been too close to Drayton Moore and his "dreaming escapades" the last few years, all the while finishing near the cellar.

Holliday, Delmon Young, or Kemp (Dodgers) coould be great fits. Both the Dodgers and Twins have outfield excess and Kemp and Young are club controlled for a few more years and cost less than Holliday who might be too risky for the price. What do the Reds have that either of those teams or Oakland need???

if the reds take on lugo or matthews jr, then they basically solidify their place as the worst franchise in sports. if they want a cheap solution that is risky they should go with Willy Mo Pena

I wouldn't call getting Lugo "adding a bat" - unless its a bad, inconsistent one. Yes, offensive #'s good this year, but thats a small sampling compared to the past years. BAD IDEA.

Don't see the Reds (or anyone else for that matter) getting their hands on Matt Kemp. He's one of the top 5 CFs in baseball already and a future MVP candidate. Dodgers would be nuts to give him up.

There's no way the Dodgers are trading Kemp, so let's just move on. Young I could see because the Twinkies have had him on the block all year. I think the Twins would be interested in pitching and infield prospects, and the Reds have players in those categories.

The prospects I would hang on to if I'm Walt are Alonso, Heisey, Cozart, Valaika, Stewart, Soto and Frazier. Everyone else....let's talk. Personally, Masset would be in a deal. I don't think his value will ever be higher.

Is Encarcion coming back any time soon. He is a pretty useful bat if healthy. Personally Josh Willingham makes a lot of sense especially in Great American Ballpark.

A's arent moving Holliday unless they get either another Type A FA or a 3B/SS in return, in addition to the usual "prospects".

Jocketty and Beane have a good trading history ;-).

Guys the A's would be interested in..umm...Alonso, Valaika, Soto, Frazier, if you're looking at positional needs

nationals should holf onto willingham.

how about this:

Reds Get: Dukes, Milledge and Olsen

Nationals get: Rhodes or herrera and dickerson.

Nationals then promote Balester.

Yeah, Josh Willingham makes tons of sense. His power would look good behind Votto/Phillips and his OBP would be good enough to make Bruce's HRs usefull.

If I were the Nats I would look to trade Willingham and Johnson for whatever arms I could get and then put Dunn at first and a speedy outfielder in LF. Lets say the Reds offer Tavaras and (for the sake of arguement) two arms: Stewart and Manuel. Reds get the power LFer they need for this year and the next and the Nats get two arms they can bolster their pen with and a defensive minded outfielder.

How good would a Reds lineup look with Votto and Encarnacion back, Willingham added and Tavaras gone.

1. Dickerson CF
2. Hanigan C
3. Votto 1B
4. Phillips 2B
5. Willingham LF
6. Bruce RF
7. Encarnacion 3B
8. Gonzalez SS

None too shabby with that pitching staff they have.

phoenix88-
That would be an awful, awful deal for the Nats. You don't trade Dukes unless you're getting young talent back. Dickerson is a borderline AAAA type. Dukes is horribly miscast in CF, but he's a solid LF/RF.

PL- Accepting an impending Type A FA back would be stupid IMO:

1) its killing Beane's leverage by reducing the number of suitors (like the Teixeira/Angels trade last year, Wren demanded a MLB 1B, which demeaned the value of the package)

2)the type A FA could always accept arbitration. Not a problem if its a good player like Holliday, but if some mediocre player accepted arb, that's payroll tied up in dead weight.

3)Hence why I like the Reds as a trade partner- Frazier is a 3B converted to CF just this season, he could easily be converted back or assume CF for the A's. Of course I really like Yonder Alonso, but he's most likely not a 3B.

Why on earth is Josh Willingham any better than Jonny Gomes?

As a Reds fan, all I want is to see the best possibly lineup on the field with the players we already have.

--More Hanigan, less Hernandez.

--More Dickerson, less Taveras. (Straight platoon here is OK.)

--More Gomes, less Nix. (Actually a Nix/Gomes platoon would be OK w/ me.)

--Get Edwin off the DL.

Really the only place where I think we are ripe for an upgrade by trading would be at SS.

But to be perfectly honest, I just don't think the Reds are good enough to be buyers. I know the division is weak, but that would be delusional. This is an average team. Let's wait, be patient, and go for it in a year that we're actually good and primed for a run. We just aren't quite there yet. We're a .500 team, and even adding a Holliday would only change an 80-win team to, say, an 82- or 83-win team, tops.

(By the way, quick clarification -- Nix has been good, I think -- a very pleasant surprise. I just really like Gomes a lot and I want him in there more.)

Melonis,
Frazier's been playing LF at 2A. Heisey and Stubbs are CF's. Frazier's really playing out of position and should be at 3B. I think the A's would definitely be interested in him, but I hope the Reds don't move him.

Also, there's no way Alonso's going into a deal for a rental player.

Right now the Reds rotation is a mess, so I don't know how they can seriously consider themselves a contender. They'd need Volquez back healthy, and Harang to pitch a lot better. The bullpen is starting to show signs of stress and if it weren't for the influx of young arms like Fisher and Roenicke, would be in bad shape too.

The preseason strengths of this team, aren't right now. The only reason they have a shot is that the division is lousy as a whole. Every team has flaws.

One guy isn't the answer.

How about Ryan Garko? He's cheap and under team control through 2012. He can play 1B, LF or be a solid bat off the bench. He's going to be crowded out by Matt LaPorta so the Indians would probably accept a decent mid-level prospect for him.

Dan, Hernandez has been good too bro. He is top 5 in most categories among NL catchers and was a HR short of the cycle yesterday. Hanigan is good young hitter, but give credit where credit is due.

The Reds need to do a few things.

1. Release Taveras. Right now he has no value, isn't likely to ever have value, and is good for only making outs and being a pinch runner. Worst case you suck it up and use him just as a bunter/PR off the bench.

2. Promote Stubbs and throw him to the fire. Right now Stubbs is the Reds best CF option. It also helps that he is one of the better leadoff type prospects in the minors.

3. Trade one of the three remaining OFs for Milledge, lets just say Nix and a ok arm. I like Milledge's talent and would be willing to take a flyer on him to see if he could make good.

4. Trade Alonso, Valiaka, Maloney and Thompson to the D-Backs for Stephen Drew

5. Promote Fraizer to AAA and put him at 3B, if he hits well he gets a cup of coffee at the end of the year.

What this accomplishes

The Reds are more a 2010 team then they are a 2009 team so trading the farm for a run now would be a mistake, but they have young talent and now is the time to fill what holes they do have.

It gives their 2010 CF time to get his feet wet and see if he can handle the job.

It would give them a talented but troubled OF that has spent time at all three positions. Either he starts in LF or Dickerson does. As much as I like Gomes he's not really a LF and his bat isn't good enough to carry the glove. However I love his power bat on the bench.

It gives the Reds a chip in EE this off-season and gets Fraizer ready for the 2010 job. But you still have EE as a fall back incase Fraizer falls on his face.

Most importantly. The Reds would gain a SS that actually has most of the tools, and it would cost them only players that were for the most part blocked. I would also not mind bringing in JJ Hardy in this slot, and was for Khalil Greene before his issues. Reyes and Hanley would of course be far superior but I can't see either being available.

"4. Trade Alonso, Valiaka, Maloney and Thompson to the D-Backs for Stephen Drew"

No! No! No! Holyshit NO!

That trade would be a disaster for Cincinnati.

I'd hesitate to give up Yonder Alonso alone for the overrated Stephen Drew.

Yeah, Drew has some pop in his bat for sure, but he's clearly a below average defensive shortstop, and his swing is too flyball geared to have a consistently high BABIP.

Drew is a fine player to have, but I doubt that he's any better than league average given his defense. He's already 26 so there isn't a lot of physical development left with him either. He's about to his arbitration, so his salary is about to go up, too.

Alonso is an elite prospect, and all three of those other guys are legitimate prospects with a chance to make an impact in the majors.

I like the idea of going after a young shortstop, but I'm not sure if Stephen Drew is really the right one to pursue.

"2. Promote Stubbs and throw him to the fire. Right now Stubbs is the Reds best CF option. It also helps that he is one of the better leadoff type prospects in the minors."

Totally agree. Stubbs at this very moment is likely to be a much better option than Willy Taveras. How the hell did Taveras and Aaron Miles get two year deals last winter when so many stars had to take one year?

Schellis,
That is way too much to give up for Drew. Valaika got hurt to start the season, so it's too early to make a verdict on his ability to hit AAA pitching. He could be every bit the hitter Drew is by 2010 himself.

Right now you need Maloney because of the holes in the rotation. I wouldn't lose any sleep over Thompson.

Alonso is off the table unless you're getting a high caliber talent under team control for at least three years. He's got big-time run producer written all over him.

I'd rather see what this team has during September call ups in Valaika and/or Cozart before making any deals at that position.

Yes! I am a Willingham fan and think he could really put it together if he was given regular playing time. It isn't that the Nats won't give him a chance, but rather that they really can't, due to their OF glut.

I would love to see him move over to the Reds. He could really take advantage of that park, I think.

Alonso isn't a LF, and really neither is Votto so one of them has to go. The Reds have gaping holes at 3B and SS that need filled. Very few talented young SS's are on the market.

Valiaka projects more as a 2B then SS, so even if he hits he has no place to play unless you get bold and trade Phillips.

Maloney and Thompson are number 4/5 starters at best and really any exposure will probably tank their value. The Reds have the arms now to the point that guys like this are fairly expendable.

If the Reds deal Alsono they need to get someone that fills one of the SS/3B holes and can keep them filled for two or three years minimum.

schellis -

"Alonso isn't a LF, and really neither is Votto so one of them has to go."

Yeah, but he's young enough that he can be tried at the position. I'd like to try Alonso at 3B as well. According to all I've read, he's got a plus glove at 1B. Experimenting with positions can be done in the minors.

"Maloney and Thompson are number 4/5 starters at best and really any exposure will probably tank their value. The Reds have the arms now to the point that guys like this are fairly expendable."

- A 4th/5th starter is really valuable. To be able to fill out the back of your rotation for league minimum is huge. That's a spot well-run, mid market teams NEED to fill at league min IMO.

They are expendable, but they shouldn't be treated as throw-ins due to how close they are to MLB and how they can contribute immediately.

bweav-

Thanks for the info on Frazier/Heisey/Stubbs.

As an outsider, I have to agree with you that one guy isn't going to push the Reds over the top. They can make some immediate internal moves that will help the team (switch out Stubbs and cut Taveras, and when EdE is back, he should help).

The pitching is massively underperforming its ERA (team FIP and tRA are much, much higher than the team ERA), which means some regression is in order. The team is much better poised to run in 2010 with the youth.

I think that is a crazy lopsided deal too, schellis (and not in the Reds favor). Even if it were true that Alonso and Votto were blocking each other, that doesn't mean that you go trade one of them for pennies on the dollar.

Also, I have read that Votto can play a pretty good LF.

Oh yeah, one more complicating factor -- I'm 99% sure there's an MLB rule that draft picks can't be traded within one year after signing! For Alonso, that's August.

I also do not yet buy the premise that Gomes isn't a good enough fielder to play a good bit of LF. I've been pleasantly surprised so far. I'd like to get Gomes out there more and see what we've got.

I've got a solution. Let's pull a Selig and move the Reds to the AL.

Votto/Alonso situation resolved!

Schellis,
You want to play in my fantasy league next year?

two names i'd like to throw out there are brandon inge (his value is probably a little high right now) and troy tulowitzki. (getting hot lately, but could be a long term answer) do the tigers have any third base prospects waiting in the wings?

I like Tulo, but I don't see Colorado moving him after the winning streak they went on.

That's been the biggest problem, there are too many teams that are afraid to cash in their chips this season.

Honestly, if the Red Sox would agree to eat Lugo's salary, I wouldn't mind the Cards trading for him. Tyler Greene is really getting to me and he is NOT cut out to be in the majors now and with Brendan Ryan beat up and having wrist issues, I think that the Cards should call about Lugo. He probably could be had for practically nothing, Red Sox fans want him gone badly, and the Cards could get a SS that could share time with Ryan when he becomes available, but I would only trade for Lugo if the Sox eat his remaining salary. Also, I wouldn't mind even talking to the Reds about Taveras, maybe he just needs a change of scenery. The Cards have been lacking speed for a while now and Taveras could swipe a lot of bases for us. Coming to St. Louis MIGHT just be what Lugo or Taveras needs to turn their seasons and careers around.

Reds have one of the better staffs right now, and thats with Owings, Arroyo, and Harang all having semi-off years. Maybe this is the new Harang i guess, But Cueto still needs to come back healthy.

we need one legit bat in the order to support votto (and itll help bruce) if thathappens theres no reason to believe reds are out of it.

As a Reds fan...Tahean and Wiggington are good ideas. Guillen is a little nuts for me, although he always puts up good power numbers, and would tee of at GABP.

I like Delmon Young as well....think the Rangers would trade Young for anything? Pitching, infield prospects?

But not likely i guess. Colorado has some OF depth at the moment.

I still like Dye. i would go for Dye, and buehrle real hard if he was available.

In terms of fantasy baseball it would be a horrible deal. But Drew is young, plays a premium position, isn't paid a ton of money and is under team control I believe for another 2 to 3 years.

The D-Backs do not have to move him so a fair trade will most likely not get the job done.

The Reds need a SS and a 3B, they have a number of minor leaguers that should be ready in short order. Other then Cozart and possibly Valiaka they really don't have a SS that is close to ready. Cozart has some bat questions and Valiaka has issues with the glove that will likely have him moved to 2B or super utility.

The Reds can horde their prospects and hope for the perfect storm, or they can use the surplus and over pay to fill their primary team need.

Alonso is a 1B everything I've seen drives that home. Votto is as well, everything I've read shows him to be a Dunn level LF. Instead of moving around players and hoping for the best trade them for known quanities.

Yes two backend starters have some value, but its not like the Reds don't have more coming in the pipeline to replace them. Perhaps you try the deal with only one of the two and throw in a expendable reliever instead.

There are very few teams out of the race right now, and the Reds will likely join them unless they get ballsy and make a move now.

As for fantasy baseball, my teams always make the playoffs, and I win about half the leagues I'm in each year, leagues are 18-20 teams since I find smaller leagues to not be worth my time.

In those I have no problem trading excess talent to get something I need either.

If this team were one player away, I would be more inclined to support a deal. They aren't. Without Volquez, this team's rotation is average. With Harang not pitching well, they slip further.

I've seen several reports, including redminorleagues.com, which say Valaika can be at least league avg. defensively at short. He may move eventually, but this guy will be given every chance to play SS for the Reds next year. With Janish as a possible defensive replacement, they'll be okay. If Cozart displaces him, so be it. Trade someone then.

Votto has better speed than Dunn ever had. One of those guys can survive in LF.

"The Reds can horde their prospects and hope for the perfect storm, or they can use the surplus and over pay to fill their primary team need."

AWFUL organizational philosophy. I haven't played fantasy BB in a while, so I can't speak there, but this is how surpluses turn into deficits. You don't overpay for average players.

And, it is arguable that 2008 was a career year for Drew, and 2006 was BABIP driven.

As bweav44 said, if Valaika can be close to league average defensively at SS, and with a decent bat, an overall 2-3 WAR player, he's better than Drew. If there is zero chance he sticks, he would've been moved off already.

the reds should deal arroyo and thompson to the Blue jays for vernon wells

the blue jays are already talking of getting rid of Wells/Rios which the Reds would do good with either of those, and the jays need another starter

if the jays traded Wells or Rios to the Reds it would free up some cash to sign Halladay longer

also a trade for Dye would work well too

Wells is way way overpaid. Reds wont touch him, Rios though is the man. Dont expect him to be traded to the reds, he is the man though.

i like willingham much better than gomes. altohugh i do like gomes. hes been good as a bench player though. and with tavares and dickerosn on the field, unless we can get someone real good to bench willy (dickerson to left) then we'll do it. he wont bench taveras for gomes

Dont the reds already have alex gonzalez? Why would they need another ss just like him? Too bad Renteria signed with the Giants, or they could own all 3 for Boston shortstops for themselves!

*former Boston ss

Too bad Lugo isn't a for Red Sox yet.

"unless we can get someone real good to bench willy (dickerson to left) then we'll do it. he wont bench taveras for gomes"

He needs to bench Taveras for Stubbs.

Easily a superior player.

i dont disagree. stubs is good and needs to be in there soon..its just gonna take a bit more time before Willy is is taken out.

Can someone, anyone, explain why people seem to think that encarnacion is going to help when he comes back. He wasn't hitting before he got injured. He made error after error at third and the Reds are playing much better with him out of the line up. Many have given up on Tavaras (I couldn't agree more) and as far as I am concerned Hannigan has earned the starting job. We need a better bat but it is not going to be encarnacion. I have seen Stubbs play on numerous occasions in Louisville. He is a good one.

Triple E is not going to help I agree. maybe a tad with his bat but the Errors he is going to make will make up for that in a negative way. Oh I call EE triple add Error to his name at the front. SS has good defense still with Janish. But I don't see him hit much over .250 and no power at all. We need a 3B. Dump Error EE, and get us something better. Tavarez is starting to hit again god forbid. So Dusty will keep him in for the next quarter season even if he starts stinking again next week. Dump Tavarez, Give Stubbs a chance or Dickerson has not been that bad in center. Get us a good SS or 3B and I think this team has potential.

If Bailey and his new pitch continue to work out well. The Reds Staff will be greatly benefiting from it. I sure miss Volquez of last season and Harrang has been up and down all year. Cueto has been pretty consistant and well Arroyo has been winning games somehow.

I sure would like to see some changes made though for the better.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

DON'T SAY ANYTHING TOO BAD ABOUT LUGO!!!!!!!!

If you do, the Reds just might not take him....
