« Red Sox & Indians Considering Three-Way Deal | Main | Roy Halladay Rumors: Thursday Night »
1:00am: Rosenthal and Morosi report that the Marlins are waiting to see if the Nationals accept their proposal for Johnson. They offered minor league pitcher Ryan Tucker and asked the Nats to pay part of the $1.8MM remaining on Johnson's contract.
5:50pm: The Marlins are making a "strong push" for Nats first baseman Nick Johnson, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. The Marlins have offered minor league pitchers to the Nationals, but the sides haven't come to an agreement on which players Washington would receive. Why? For a 30 year old guy who makes under 10M, why not go get Victor Martinez???

Ryan Tucker would be a very good haul for Johnson.

"Why? For a 30 year old guy who makes under 10M, why not go get Victor Martinez???"
Because the cost of adding Johnson will be a fraction of what it would take to add Martinez.
And I wouldn't get too excited about Tucker, he's fallen off a lot. He's been hurt this season and his three starts in AAA have been absolutely horrid. 5 K, 12 BB in 9.2 innings. And he's 23 in December so he's not THAT young.
Not a bad return for Johnson, but I wouldn't consider it to be a very good haul.

What's the info on Aaron Thompson?
Posted by: theredskin | July 30, 2009 at 06:29 PM
he's going to the Mets not the Marlins
Posted by: Okaypoppi | July 30, 2009 at 06:32 PM
Yesss. Move Cantu back to 3B and send Bonifacio down or something cuz he is terrible.
Aaron Thompson is a 6'3 lefty, former 1st round pick. Career has been plagued with injuries. He will prob turn out to be a bullpen arm, maybe a situational lefty?
Ryan Tucker wants to be a starter but can't because he only has 2 pitches. Could be a future good closer...... If he gets the mentality

Yes! Trade Aaron Thompson for Nick Johnson in a heartbeat!
C- Baker
1B- N. Johnson
2B- Uggla
3B- Cantu
SS- Ramirez
LF- Coughlan
CF- Ross
RF- Hermida
Looks pretty good. Maybe get Hermida out of there and it looks better.

If the Nats give up their best trade chip for 2 middling relief pitchers, I'll be done with this team. Thought things would get better when Bowden quit, but I guess not. All the talk all along was how much they wanted for him - if this is their version of a lot, they need to get some new blood in the front office. One time first round picks does not mean good prospect.

What if the Marlins made a play for Aubrey Huff and Luke Scott?
Gets Hermida and Bonifacio out of the lineup. And why sure they would cost a lot more than Nick Johnson, they are a big improvement.
Hanley
Baker/Coghlan (depends on RHP or LHP)
Huff
Cantu
Scott
Uggla
Ross
Paulino/Coghlan
Posted by: Barroid_Bonds | July 30, 2009 at 06:58 PM
Barroid_Bonds,
Getting Huff and Scott from the O's would be expensive - Huff is currently a type A arbitration-eligible guy, so the O's could possibly get a 1st and supplemental pick if someone else signs him this winter - any deal would have to provide more than that potential. And Scott is a fan favorite in Baltimore and is very valuable, partly because he isn't a free agent until after the 2012 season, so not just a rental. To get those 2 together, it would probably take multiple 'very good' prospects.

I feel we should get Johnson if we only have to give up one of those guys. What are some other Marlins fan guesses on some possible deals we could make?
Posted by: FLAMarlinsFan | July 30, 2009 at 07:21 PM
Hey I have three trades that I found. -The Marlins are in "strong talks" with the Kansas City Royals for Mark Teahen for " Undefined Pitching Prospect" -The Marlins are in "serious talks" with Colorado for Garret Atkins for "Undefined Batting Prospect" and -The Marlins send either Andruw Miller or Sean West to the Padres for Heath Bell. We were "interested" in bringing Willingham back but I don't believe that will occur. Then of course Nick Johnson. Out of those who would you rather get. Personally the dream of those would be to get Bell and Johnson.

Loopy,
I know they will be expensive together. But anyone else we are looking to add we be just as expensive too. Nick Johnson for 2 prospects? Why not get 2 good MLB players and trade say 5 or 6
Posted by: Barroid_Bonds | July 30, 2009 at 07:40 PM
Daniel Martinez,
I haven't heard about Atkins. I wouldn't mind him. Excited to see what we do. What about a deal for Bannister?
Posted by: FLAMarlinsFan | July 30, 2009 at 07:43 PM
FlaMarlinsFan I'm sure that the management has looked at Bannister but it always depends on what the other team wants and the Royals are notorious for high asking prices. The good thing that I heard David Sampson say to day is that there are currently 10 offers made by the Fish and other teams on the table. He gave it a 70/30 chance that they will pull the trigger on a trade but we'll just have to wait and see. I personally believe that a bat will help us more then arm help because our arms have been consistant and our offense has definately not. If you look at our arms 11 of our 13 arms have sub 3.60 ERA and the only one to have higher is Leo Nunez who is still dominent.
Posted by: Daniel Martinez | July 30, 2009 at 07:50 PM
Barroid - Fair enough. Don't know how willing the Marlins (and the fans) are to gut their system too much. I suspect the O's would be more than happy to take Logan Morrison, Sean West and then some off your hands.
They are happy with their OF right now so they might be willing to let Stanton and Maybin stay...
Posted by: Loopy | July 30, 2009 at 07:51 PM
The Orioles would probably want top A-Plus prospects and we can't leave the amazing future we have for right now. No to Maybin, Morrison, Stanton adn you know that the Fish don't trade pitching. I know it's really early but I was just thinking of that 2012 line-up: CF Maybin 2ND Coghlan SS Hanley 1ST Logan Morrison RF Micheal Stanton 3RD Matt Dominguez C Skipworth OF Scott Cousins P Josh Johnson (Hopefully they sign him) Thats a distgusting line-up. Some are already Pro-Ready and if the rest prgress as scouted WOW 2012 Will be an amazing year. And to think that we don't even have to wait to see a playoff team like that cause we have one right now. Go Fish Believe in '09
Posted by: Daniel Martinez | July 30, 2009 at 07:56 PM
This would be a good deal for both teams.
Marlins get:
Adrian Gonzalez - 1B
Heath Bell - RP
Padres get:
Andrew Miller - SP
Cameron Maybin - CF
Mike Stanton - OF

Trade both Bonifacio and Hermida, I am sick of them.
Bonifacio
Hermida
Miller
Prospect
for
Bell
Gonzalez

"Bonifacio
Hermida
Miller
Prospect
for
Bell
Gonzalez"
Right, because obviously the Padres will take two players who you don't want as part of a deal for two of their three most valuable pieces on the ML roster.
Bonifacio is just a bad hitter to the point where he probably isn't a major leaguer, and I can't imagine that Hermida would be anything else but the fifth or sixth guy in such a deal.
Posted by: scribbletone | July 30, 2009 at 08:54 PM
if any "possible" deal involves stanton just forget it....if they wouldnt trade him in a deal for manny why would the trade him now?
Posted by: fish_fan_9703 | July 30, 2009 at 11:28 PM
The Pirates will take Bonifacio off or your hands. How about this, you trade Ryan Tucker for Nick Johnson, push Cantu to 3rd and we will give you Matt Capps for Bonifacio and Aaron Thompson.
Posted by: Deal_Nothington | July 31, 2009 at 01:18 AM
if im whasington i say no tyo the trade.I ask for aaron Thompson and another prospect.
Posted by: bharris22 | July 31, 2009 at 01:54 AM
I still REALLY like the Gonzalez/Bell idea.....but the left handed Nick Johnson in the lineup to protect Hanley Ramirez is a good more financially feasible solution.
Posted by: ManOfTeal | July 31, 2009 at 06:45 AM
Ryan Tucker could be a future closer. I would try to steer the Nats in the direction of Aaron Thompson as much as possible, but eventually trade Tucker if we had to.
Posted by: Fishfan4 | July 31, 2009 at 07:02 AM
Remember guys, the Nats can't ask for too much since Nick's contract runs out at the end of the year.
Posted by: Fishfan4 | July 31, 2009 at 07:03 AM
Exactly, fishfan4. I'm a nats fan and I would be happy with just about anything for him since he is only a 2 month rental and our record is so bad. We have no reason to hold on to him if we can get anybody with any potential whatsoever. Don't get me wrong, I love Nick Johnson on our team but it makes no sense to keep him. Same thing with Joe Beimel. They need to flip him for whatever they can get.
Posted by: peytondowdy | July 31, 2009 at 07:22 AM
I would be happy with the Tucker trade. Baseball America ranked him as the Marlins' 5th best prospect in the organization. For a two month rental of Johnson plus $1.8 mil, I'd take that trade in a heartbeat.
