« Marlins To Sign Luis Ayala | Main | O's Grant Livingston His Release »
As David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News reports, the Phillies have discussed adding free agent right-hander Paul Byrd, but aren't sure he'll present an upgrade.
"The question is whether Paul Byrd is going to be any better than any of the guys that we have -- Rodrigo Lopez, or [Carlos] Carrasco, or [Andrew] Carpenter or [Kyle] Kendrick," GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said Thursday. "Why would he be any better than those guys? We've brought up the name, we've talked about it. We've talked about almost every guy that might be available, whether it is free agency or what."
It's safe to say the Phillies probably aren't too serious about adding the 38-year-old. He was 11-12 with a 4.60 ERA last year between the Indians and Red Sox.

As a Phillies fan I am glad the Mets have sucked just as bad as the Phils have the last 5 weeks.

Bring him and see what he can do.
Smarter than trading for anyone.

Wow. Byrd went 4-2 down the stretch for Boston last year and the Philly offense is powerful, at least as good as the offense the Sox had in 2008 to support the 3 runs or so he would allow over 6-7 innings. No harm in signing this wily and crunch time/battle tested vet, who knows what playoff runs are like.

Pitching wins mean nothing.
Anyway I'm done hoping for a top pitcher acquisition. It just defies all of this team's logic. It'll be a "veteran" or somebody cheap. And that's fine, we're not repeating this year even if we traded for a better pitcher.
Might as well save the young guys for ourselves or a better deal at a better time.

"we're not repeating this year even if we traded for a better pitcher"
wow way to think negatively. there is no reason we can't repeat. i know they have lost like 14 out of the last 17 but pick your head up and have some faith dude.

Think of it less as pessimism and more about not wanting to deal good prospects for naught. This team is too flawed for one big trade to empty out the system.

as a mets fan i do believe that byrd will be an upgrade. for christ sakes his last years era is better than every SP on the phillies staff. they are just plain pathetic. Also i am glad the phillies have been tanking it this past week. they can not get away from the injury depleted mets which is plain sad. wait until we get our players back then you phillies fans will be crappping a bigger brick out your bums!!!

"Sign Ben Sheets already. Even if he can't help this year they still plan on playing baseball next year right? He's only 30 and even if he never returns to his previous form whatever he ends up will still be better than 80 percent of this rotation." i just copied and pasted this from the philly daily news. you see phillies fans even your fellow fans think your rotation is garbage. hahahaha

@meetNgreetDAmets
Wow. You seem to bring a lot to a conversation. Great analysis- the Phillies pitching has been a mess. Surprisingly, you're the only one who knew!
Oh, and the Marlins are a better team than the Mets (and the Phillies, at least the Phillies from June until now).
