Braves Sign First Rounder Mike Minor

8:36pm: Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com tweets that Mike Minor signed the contract and  "is now officially a Brave."

1:25pm: Baseball America's Jim Callis hears that the Braves had agreed to a deal with Minor before the draft, but didn't sign him right away because of "interference from MLB." Apparently the commissioner's office pressured the Braves not to make the deal official because they didn't want it to inflate other bonuses. The $2.42MM bonus Minor will receive tops MLB's recommended bonus by $242k.

12:49pm: MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo hears that the deal is not yet official.

9:02am: The Braves and top draft pick Mike Minor agreed to a contract that includes a $2.42MM signing bonus, according to Maurice Patton of the Tennessean. The Braves have never given out a bigger bonus and it's the biggest bonus ever awarded to a seventh overall pick, besting Prince Fielder's $2.4MM mark from 2002. Minor, a lefty, could pitch in the Arizona Fall League to get work in this year.

Uuuh this guy was drafted for signability over higher ceiling draft picks, but still ends up with the biggest Braves' bonus ever?

With all of the good players (Alex White, Bobby Borchering, Shelby Miller, Matt Purke, Grant Green, etc.) that they bypassed to take this guy he had better be good.

The Braves haven't had a pick close to this high since 1991. He signed for last year's slot. I wouldn't have offered him more than 2009 slot, but 2008 slot for the 7th rounder is very signable. Unlike a Matzek, Miller, or Purke.

DAMN YOU GIANTS. You can have Mike Minor, I want the Braves to have Zack Wheeler.

So the kid misses out on 2 months of game play solely because Selig wants to control how much money goes to draftees?

Why doesn't he march up to the Steinbrenner's and tell them they cannot sign any FA's, because they spent too much last off season instead?

Selig, take a hike, or more like, rest of the owners how about voting that jerk out of his chairmanship and getting a real commissioner.

This slot system costs players time on the field.

Not to mention if teams cannot afford to compete (in some cases) dump the teams. nationals had no biz getting a team period and have proven they cannot draw, nor compete, dump 1/3 of the teams that should not even exist and imagine you will have parity.

Does baseball's antitrust exemption prevent teams from suing MLB? Because if teams had agreements which would allow them to employ players and MLB refused to sign off on the contracts in a timely fashion, I'd imagine that MLB would be liable in civil court for the lost value of two months of playing time for Minor and others in a similar situation.

don't feel bad braves fans.

Bud Selig has all but announced that KC gets the all-star game in 2012...but then is backtracking say he will take it away if we sign our #1, #2 and #3 picks for over-slot..which is what he have offered and the 3 picks have agreed to.

Bud refuses to sign off on them until closer to the deadline...and also plans to yank our All-Star game...so yeah. screw the MLB front office.

James F- I had the same thought as you. Also can the player or agent file a lawsuit for the same interference? These shenanigans are costing the player developmental time at the professional level affects when he starts getting paid real money. Selig is a weasel who needs to be fired.

@johns: Only about 6 teams would draw any crowds if they put the teams the Nats are putting on the field (Yankees, RedSox, Phillies, Cubs, Cardinals, maybe Dodgers). IF DC doesn't deserve a team because of their attendance during this putrid stretch, than you're essentially saying only those 6 teams should exist. That would be a pretty boring league.

Also, the Nats came to DC with 0 talent on the roster and 0 minor league prospects, thanks to the moronic trades and lack of development under Omar Minaya and the mis-management under MLB ownership before the current owners bought the team. Essentially, the Nats were an expansion franchise except they didn't get supplemental picks to speed up their development like a true expansion franchise would. The poor decisions their current owners have made certainly slowed the development. However, give the Nats a chance in DC. Lets see them break .500 and see how they draw. They have a promising young pitching staff (all under 25 years old), and they are making better baseball decisions since Jim Bowden left (look at the trade that brought in Nyger Morgan- it's turned out very well already). It is not as hopeless a situation as their current record indicates. Give the Nats time to develop before you want to boot them out of MLB.

bobhamelin, I knew he was refusing to sign off on the deals, but I didn't know he was pulling that kind of stuff to get us to sign them for less. Even when the small market teams do try to start spending in the draft, we get hamstrung.

bobhamelin, I heard about the shenanigans with Selig & the All-Star Game. That kinda stuff makes me angry. The draft is broken Bud! Do something about it!

I hope the Royals sign those picks & tell Bud to shove his precious AS Game you know where.

Get this man out of office.

Let's not get too carried away with attendance SUSasskush. Washington has never cracked the top 10, highest was 2005 at #11 and never drawn 3M before either which the LAD do on a every year basis..

If it was not the nation's capitol, would imagine baltimore would have had a major thing or 2 to say regarding DC ever getting a team again, since the old Senators never drew well.

It is nice to see the team draw decent, but remember, the team is still new and figures are going down every year.

There are a lot of teams, even competitive teams that do not draw that maybe should not exist, Rays are another. The Thunderdome that they play in is horrific and need a stadium badly. I have attended multiple games in it and is beyond terrible. They want the taxpayers to pay for it, yet when anybody besides the NYY, or Boston is in town the place is 2/3 empty and they are good.

Everyone assumed that the Braves bypassed more talented players because they were not as "signable" as Minor. Now, we know this for sure.

It is way past time for MLB to set hard slots for drafted players and to make players "declare" for the draft, much as they do in the NFL and the NBA. The worst teams would then be assured of getting the best players.

Pay no attention to the man behind the screen. No collusion going on here.

Minor signing this late takes so much away from this pick imo. I think this pick was made for a couple of reasons: signability, future trade bait (lefty starters always have some value until they pull a jojo reyes), and because he will probably be the second starter to reach the majors assuming strasburg signs. Taking away two months of learning and development means it’s going to take at least that much longer for him to get to the majors. And with our lack of SP at the upper levels, the sooner he was ready the better.

also another thing to note is the commish did the same thing when we drafted jason heyward. If he had those extra two months back then, he would be in the majors making an impact now

Selig is a tool of the owners and their lap dog. He is not going anywhere.

Congrats Minor, welcome to inconsistency and horrible seasons to come.

So the Yankees can spend half a billion dollars on FA's, the RedSox can spend 52.5 million for the rights to talk to a pitcher, but the Braves are in trouble for spending 242,000 on a draft pick?

Crazy world

Congrats Minor, welcome to inconsistency and horrible seasons to come.

I wasn't aware that Minor signed with the Marlins. All kidding aside, what did Atlanta ever do to you? Braves reject your interview request for the foam finger guy job? If you actually used some reasonable facts and stats to back up your assertions rather than blind hate maybe people would listen to you. The Braves future is extremely bright with a very strong starting staff and two young offensive studs on the way in heyward and freeman

They've also got some catcher whose pretty good. And there's this irish guy, I think he plays outfield. And they've got a SS from Cuba who I hear does good work.
