« Discussion: September Callups | Main | Pirates Sign Jorge Julio »
Chico Harlan of The Washington Post reports that the Nationals traded infielder Ronnie Belliard to the Dodgers following today's game. Washington will receive A-ball pitcher Luis Garcia and a player to be named in the deal.
Belliard, 34, was hitting .247-.297-.376 in 203 plate appearances for the Nats this year, spending time at first, second and third base. He is in the final year of the two year, $3.5M extension he signed during the 2007 season. Garcia, 22, has a 2.92 ERA in 34 appearances (15 starts) in the Low-A Midwest League this season, and was not considered one the Dodgers' top 30 prospects by Baseball America this spring.

Hmm. Belliard's been pretty abysmal this year but we're talking about a guy who had .845 OPS in 2008 and .759 in 2007. Nice bench bat pickup for LA.

On top of the stories today arent we mike great job by the way staying on top of the site i find your stories quite interesting and enjoyed your take on the yankees september call ups.. and this move was probably made to give hudson a break on those blow outs to save him for the post season if anything

Why? They have something called a "Blake DeWitt". Just let him do whatever you were going to use Ronnie whogivesas*** to do. What is Colletti's deal? Why does he do these things? Why would you give up ANYTHING for a useless player when you have a similarly useless player that could LEARN SOMETHING and has a PART IN THE TEAM'S FUTURE stashed away? Why? I don't understand.

Belliard started off awful but has hit .320/.376/.470 in July and August. Nice move for both sides I'd say.

Weird I thought they were in the market for a POWER LEFTY off the bench not another utilty 8 hitter. Doesn't make much sense at all.

since the indians are rebuilding is there any chance that a team would be willing to take on travis hafners huge contract in the hopes he regains his power stroke and give him a shot off the bench and maybe start

first off hes not gonna spell hudson in blow outs..they got juan castro to do that...second who would u rather have pinch hit loretta or belliard...? its just another bat to add to the bench esp with the rosters expanding...everyone questioned colletti's signing of motta and weaver and i think those worked out this season...even milton was effective before he got hurt as was vargas before he was traded

DeWitt is batting .245 in AAA with moderate power. Yeah, he's got more walks than strikeouts, but he hasn't exactly torn up the minors.
Presumably DeWitt will be their everyday second baseman next season though so that's something to think about.

I have a feeling the Dodgers will re-sing Orlando Hudson. Or at least try to.

Belliard's numbers are abysmal because Manny was playing him off the bench earlier in the year. Jim at least started him and his numbers were pretty darn good since.

I was expecting someone to trade for Belliard, because he truly is on a hot streak, and helped the Cards to the title a few years ago in a similar situation. The Nats have done this kind of trade in the past, and the pitchers they received include Shairon Martis (5 wins this year before going back down, bound to be back) and Luis Atilano, who is approaching a chance at the bigs.
This is the kind of trade bottom teams need to make over and over again. I think the Dodgers will be glad for a month of Ronnie Belliard, or a month and a half if they make the post-season.
As for the people who wonder why this is even worth a mention, feel free to ignore the transactions that occur except for your Yankees. You have many blogs to help you congratulate yourselves. This is the place the rest of us go for all of the transactions in MLB.

You could call this a slight upgrade over Juan Castro. It's another option for the post-season. However it's not the bench bat we need. Colletti needs to get on the phone and get busy the clock is ticking. He has absolutely blown it in August.

castro is an incredibly better defensive second basemen than belliard...and trades work both ways...the other teams have to want what ur offering...colletti has done a good job of not trading away young talent...it wasnt too long ago when everyone was calling for the dodgers to trade kemp for a veteran

Ha-ha. Thanks for that.
I don't understand the negativity about Colletti. All the moves he's made in August have worked out well. Granted there weren't that many, but no essential moving parts were disturbed either. Sherrill is a guy to take into the postseason. I liked that move.
As for Belliard, it might be a question whether to put him or Loretta on the postseason roster.

To give them a better option than Loretta.

Castro is without a doubt ridiculously better with a glove than Belliard. But it's the bat they acquired, and the ability to play 2nd and the corners.

""""who would u rather have pinch hit loretta or belliard""""
Belliard... and by a country mile.

While I do not ever disagree with improving in increments in areas of weakness, I do think that if our entire season comes down to whether Ronnie Belliard or Mark Loretta is our pinch hitter off the bench, we're in trouble.
Posted by: GScott | August 31, 2009 at 03:33 AM
I don't think our "entire season" depends on this. It's just a low cost upgrade, some low hanging fruit.
