Angels Sign GM Tony Reagins To Extension

The Angels signed general manager Tony Reagins to a long-term contract extension, tweets Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse.  Reagins has been the Angels' GM since October of 2007, when Bill Stoneman stepped down.  His notable signings include Torii Hunter, Brian Fuentes, Juan Rivera, and Bobby Abreu.  He also acquired Jon Garland, Mark Teixeira, and Scott Kazmir in trades.  Reagins faces a tough offseason ahead with John Lackey, Chone Figgins, and Vladimir Guerrero among his free agents.

Now Tony needs to start wheeling and dealing.

I'd give Reagins a solid B so far. He has definitely done a great job in fielding a competitive team. Hard to argue with 2 95+ win teams.

My only gripe has been around overpaying to bring people in. All of the FA signings were solid - just for too much cash and too many years. The Garland and Tex deals were both solid moves. Too early to tell about Kazmir - although his 09 regular season with the team was outstanding.

Signing Abreu wasn't the right move but that can be offset by other smart moves. Overall I have a lot of confidence in Reagins ability to continue to lead this club.

those 95+ wins were mostly stonemans I would have waited til after this offseason to give him an extension hes not like billy beane competing for so long on a low budget we have the what 3rd highest payroll and an owner that doesnt mind spending money...I blame reagins for not getting Miguel Cabrerra and his FA signings were no brainers calls Hunters Agent what do you want to play for us they laugh and say 18 mil a year Reagins says ok meet me at del taco now torii is making 2 mil a year less than Tex and thats with the yankees doing their pay whatever to get em cuz they have a multi billion dollar tv deal

Now sign Vlad sign Lackey siggn Beltre and sign Bay or Holliday

Listen reagins you have really tough assignments first its Lackey.Guerreruo,Bay,Figgins,Cliff Lee,and/or holliday.

Angels were 6th in payroll (per USA Today - http://www.getlisty.com/preview/2009-mlb-team-payrolls/) as of opening day. That generated the 2nd best record in baseball. The team with the best record spent a whole $90m more. They weren't the most efficient but they did secure more wins than other teams who had more money to spend.

As for not getting Cabrera ... the rumors at the time were Kendrick + Weaver + Santana. On top of that you needed to shell out $20m/year. AND he happens to play the same position as our best offensive player - Kendry Morales. We really could use a big bat in our lineup but it's hard to fault Reagins for not meeting those demands.

Finally for Hunter - they did overpay. Hunter was ready to go to Texas. He wanted to play in Texas and they had a very competitive offer. The only way he ends up in LA is to overpay. While I am not happy with the move Hunter's impact on the club is huge. Fangraphs may not show it, but Hunter's value is tremendous in terms of leadership and experience. I give Reagins credit for landing a CFer. And landing the best one available.

Hunter is crapped on for no good reason by UZR. PM still has him above average in the field, and he is a better offensive player than at any time in his career. It was a slight overpay, but not egregious. It was pretty obvious that Stoneman screwed up with the GMJ deal the year before.

As for Abreu, the first Abreu signing was a thing of genius, and the second one is right along with his value. I don't get why bj doesn't like him.

Actually, Cabrera was still considered a 3B then, but the point is made. The team didn't need Cabrera at that point, well as much as any team doesn't "need" a player with that kind of talent, and the cost was way too high.

Thundah77-

You should give Tony Reagins more credit. Before becoming Angels GM, he was the minor league scouting director for quite some time. He's more or less responible for Weaver, Saunders, Santana, Aybar, Kendrick, Morales, Mathis, Napoli, Willits, Wood, Sean-Rod(now with Tampa), Bulger, Jepsen, Palmer & Adenhart(RIP).

I agree. Reagins deserves an extension. Stoneman was terrible. He never wanted to make a move so when Reagins took over and made moves, everyone looked at him as a weirdo. He's done well and unlike Stoneman, I think he has a plan or reasons for all his moves.

First off reagins inherited a pretty good system from head to toe from stoneman.. I could of done without trading for texiera without being able to get an extension. Kendry morales bailed him out of that hole though thank god. But other then that the guy isn't too bad.

Deals that would make me happy:
sign a power production bat for the dh spot. and get a lefty like washburn to solidify the row. And give wood a chance for once!!

I don't see them signing lackey Vladimir or even figgins. Of any of them figgins definately shouldn't be signed because he freezes in the post season year after year. I like lackey, but he is gonna test fa and probably get some 18+ per year offers and Vladimir is just depressing to watch. He just looks like he is in pain from his knees to his shoulders.

He inherited a pretty good system in which Tony ran for years. The problem with Stoneman is he always held on to prospects too long and we the Angels never got what they could have for prospects. We had too many prospects that weren't able to break into the MLB line-ups that Stoneman should have trade for more players if they weren't going to play.

They do need to sign a big bat, I agree. (Holliday)

A decent pitcher (Lackey's gone and not gonna be worth the money. Why not gamble a bit and sign Chapman. He's not going to replace Lackey, but he should be decent.

Let Figgy go and let Wood play, or if you sign Figgy, then you have to Trade would for a pitcher.

Last but not least, do what ever you can to get rid of GMJ even if we have to eat some of his contract and get a player or prospects in return.

cuscusyou had me in on your point til you threw up Willits name that guy really really sucks his fielding is crap and the league figured out you can throw 2 strikes down the middle at 50 mph and he wont swing cuz hes looking only for a walk Reagins hasnt done bad he just hasnt done anything really as a GM this year is his test and you dont give him the extension til he passes the test thats all im saying and to say the first Abreu signing was genius? its not like we signed him and took him away from another suitor NOBODY offered him a contract I dont think that lens to Reagins prowess as a gm.

Reagins has done a great job. Period. For those of us who thought Stoneman was a bit too cautious, Reagins has been the a refreshing change.

jolivarez, I'm not sure I understand your concern of Reagins trading Marek and Kotchman for Texiera. What was the problem with that trade? The Angels were trying hard to better their team for the playoffs. They won 100 games that year. It just didn't work out in playoffs, but it wasn't Texiera's fault.

The Angels thought they knew what they had in Morales, even if it wasn't immediately apparent to us fans. In fact, Scioscia has said that if Morales flopped, it'd be the biggest miss by their organization since he's been there.

In terms of Hunter, I was as happy as I could be when he signed him. It took guts to make that signing considering they just signed GMJ to a terrible, long-term contract. Thanks Stoneman.

Hopefully the Angels were smart and locked up Reagins as long as they locked up Scioscia.

REAGINS nice to have with the angels

Reagins got Texeira, fuenetes, kazmir, and Abreu get more an i'll be happy.

Reagins has been one of the most underrated GMs in the game IMO.

I don't necessarily think he's aggressive, and he can make questionable moves that looked questionable from the getgo (Hunter, Fuentes, the second Abreu contract), but he's accumulated a solid body of work, including letting key players go (K-Rod, Teixeira).

And, of course, he's a great scout, as evidenced by the Angels' young core, most of which he drafted.

And, considering that a 1/2 year rental of Holliday, an inferior player to Teix, got in a bad economy, its hard to argue with the Teixeira deal even if the Angels would've won the division anyway (it was a major boost in the playoffs; the failure is blamed on certain other key players underperforming)

Had he made the Cabrera trade and given the subsequent extension (mandated by the volume of package given up), it would've been potentially franchise crippling (it could be for Detroit).

Now, if he gives Lackey AJ Burnett money, or signs Figgins to more than a 2 year deal and sells low on Wood, I might have to rescind my opinion.

"and to say the first Abreu signing was genius? its not like we signed him and took him away from another suitor NOBODY offered him a contract I dont think that lens to Reagins prowess as a gm."

No, but Reagins waited until Ibanez, Burrell, Dunn, Giambi, Manny, and Bradley all were signed away by other suitors for more money, then snatched Abreu away for cheaper. Waiting until all the suitors disappear and the market tanks to get a player on the cheap is considered a smart move.

Melonis rex,

It doesnt work that way Reagins didnt wait for everyone else to be signed to get Abreu cheaper the price goes up for each player once another is signed because teams have less options now Abreu could have said nah youll pay me more because you dont have anyone else left that you can sign...but he didnt cuz nobody wanted to sign him..its a great signing dont get me wrong but it wasnt planned that way and it wasnt great strategy that got it for us it fell into our laps which is great for us Im just saying that signing doesnt show his prowess as a GM to me the really good gms are people like billy beane who put out competitive clubs with no payroll year after year or the twins gm or even the Marlins gm they make great moves but the ownership just wont let them build Reagins doesnt have that problem

Look - I love the guys the who run a shoe-string budget and succeed. That said, Reagins has to play the hand he is dealt. The Angels have been incredibly economical when you compare wins to team payroll. There are plenty of teams with a higher payroll that haven't come close to the success of the Angels.

Mr. Thundah77...
what you just said, is one of the most insanely idiotic things, i have ever read. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response, were you even close to anything - that could be considered a rational thought.... everyone in this post, is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may god have mercy on your soul.

ps. learn to use punctuation. sorry to flame, but i find it incredibly hard to take you serious after your insanely incorrect, 5000 word long sentences.
