Jon Heyman has the latest
on Milton Bradley, Roy Halladay, Adrian Gonzalez, and plenty of other
big names in his new column. Let's check out some of the highlights....
- Although Texas and Tampa Bay seem like the most likely
destinations for Bradley, one GM says the outfielder needs to play in a
small market like Kansas City or San Diego.
- If the Rangers were
to acquire Bradley, they would probably want the Cubs to pick up about
$16MM of the remaining $21MM on his contract.
- People around baseball figure that Halladay is
more likely than Gonzalez to be traded this winter. But a rival GM wouldn't be surprised to see both players get traded, since
"sometimes new GMs like to put their stamp on a team."
- If the Boston Red Sox are in the Halladay hunt again, don't expect
them to give up as much as they would have this summer. One executive believes they offered too much.
- Should the New York
Yankees offer John Lackey a deal similar to the one they gave A.J.
Burnett last winter, a competing GM thinks it would be enough to land
Lackey, given teams' increasing reluctance to hand out long-term
contracts.
- The New York Mets are a little wary of Lackey's "alleged arm
issues" but could be interested in second-tier free agent starters like
Joel Pineiro and Randy Wolf.
- Chone Figgins is a top priority
for the Angels early in the offseason. They could attempt to re-sign
Vladimir Guerrero later in the winter, but he's not a priority for now.
- The Philadelphia Phillies would like to lock up Cliff Lee to a long-term extension that costs them less than $100MM.
"One executive believes they offered too much (for Halladay)."
Let me guess, would that "one executive" be a Red Sox executive trying to lower Halladay's trade value.
I honestly can't see Adrian Gonzalez coming to Boston without netting a massive prospect haul from Boston. How could Hoyer defend that move without gettingthe upper hand in a trade with Theo.

Heyman is out to lunch & has been leading the media charge for a minimal return on Halladay for some time. Thumbs down.

I prefer pinero over wolf but the have to trade for a 1b(another ace like halla halla halladay)
If we have a good to great starting rotation our offense won't look so bad.

Heyman is on his game... what a waste of space.

Hoyer was part of the brain trust that wanted to trade FOR Gonzalez, why do people think he would now want to trade him away?
(And don't say money; AGon is not injury prone like Peavy is, this he's worth a big contract.)

Re: Lackey....What alleged arm issues again? I was just looking at his stats and was getting spooked that he may sign with a team I like.

Bradley would benefit from going to KC and KC would benefit from Bradley (hell, it would at least make them interesting) shame it won't happen as neither side seems paticularly interested.

Would wimerflores, jennry mejia, reuben tejada, reess havens, josh thole, jon neise, and scott moviel be enough for roy halladay?(allows mets to keep bradley holt, fernando martinez and ike davis)
Will a 3year 27 million contract be enough for joel piniero?
Do the mets have any chance of beating the phillies in their division? Lol

if the Yankees get lackey its unfair (cc, burnett, texaria, A-roid, ect.)

i know this might sound crazy, but why not try and shift david wright to 1b and go after chone figgins, beltre or crede? wright has a terrible arm at 3b but is a better option than any availble 1b free agents.

beastOftheEast, Toronto's GM said that he wants 'quality over quantity'. I don't think he'd look favourably upon any scenario that allows a team (be it the Mets or whomever) to hold out the guys he might want.
What good does it good does it do to offer 6 guys if the 6 guys aren't any of the more coveted prospects?
That said, who knows who Anthopoulous covets the most. Time will tell.

"Re: Lackey....What alleged arm issues again?" - UncleMo
Lackey has missed the start of the past two seasons because of arm issues. I think it was a shoulder both times but could be wrong.

LOL, good luck with that!

As has already been stated, you don't get Halladay for a package of 'B' prospects.
If you have an outstanding prospect in SS, C, outfield or pitching, then we start there.

Brad holt =#2 starter potenial
Jennry mejia=#1 starter potenial
Wilmer flores= called next miguel cabera
Reese havens= chase utley with more range
For halladay=best pitcher in baseball
I think that is enough no doubt

Brad Holt = middle reliever
Jenrry Mejia = too young to tell what he'll be
Wilmer Flores = see Mejia
Reese Havens = nowhere the same league as Utley
For Halladay = total pipedream
Mejia and Flores have wonderful potential, but not one of those guys will be an impact player for at least the next 3 years.

If the Blue Jays ONLY want F. Mart, 1 of Holt/Ike Davis & 1 other solid prospect - what are the Mets gonna do?
Basically, The Jays aren't gonna do a 4, 5 or 6 for 1 trade if they don't hold a very high regard for the players coming back.
It's great that you hold those players in high regard but the Blue Jays scouts might not agree with your evaluation.

No mention of F-Mart?
That's the same problem the Phillies had. They just did not want to discuss the top prospects, trying to pad things out with second-tier guys.
It really does amaze me. It seems people want to win without paying a price.
The Phillies found out what that meant in the WS. And if teams like the Mets aren't prepared to ante up, then they will also find out what it means with another disappointing season.
No skin off my nose. Maybe you can all take your chances and fight each other out for Doc's services when he becomes a FA. Good luck beating the Yankees, btw...

Lackey has health concerns so they're looking into Wolf? Huh?

Lackey hasn't pitched a complete season for three years. Began each of the last two hurt. The Angels can let him go if they get Halladay, otherwise it will be trouble for them in the playoffs facing CC, AJ, and Lackey with Pettite bringing up the rear.

The Mets were blinded by their own prospect awe when they nixed any proposals including Bobby Parnell. Well guess what? He kind of stinks.
Now, Mets fans have the nerve to suggest a SEVEN-PROSPECT trade for Halladay? Come on, seven players in a group means the team wants to send a bunch of B-level players and hope they add up to a superstar. They do not.
I've watched Holt pitch many times, and he is terribly inconsistent. He reminds me of Oliver Perez, and I mean that in a very bad way. Mejia is one pitcher I like an awful lot, but the kid was 19 in AA ball this year. It's way too early to judge his potential ceiling (though I'd have to guess it's very high based on what I've seen).
And besides, Fernando Martinez has done what, exactly, to remain an uber prospect? He looks mediocre to me, another over-hyped international player not living up to his potential. The Mets just don't have the required pieces to make a swap for an elite. They don't.
