« Twins Looking At Veteran Starters | Main | Dodgers Not Pursuing Aroldis Chapman »
According to WEEI.com's Alex Speier, both Nick Green and Joey Gathright elected to become free agents after the Red Sox outrighted them off the 40-man roster late last week.
Green, 31, hit .236/.303/.366 in 309 plate appearances in 2009, holding down Boston's shortstop gig for much of the season. Speier mentions that Green will have surgery on his back today to correct a disc and nerve problem.
The 28-year-old Gathright received just 32 plate appearances with the Cubs and Sox this season, but made Boston's postseason roster as a pinch-runner specialist.

Bobby Cox and the boys seemed to have a serious mancrush on Green last year. He has some history with the club playing 95 games for the Braves in '04.
We don't have a legit veteran backup for Escobar at short and the INF in general (Infante is more of a OF/INF super-utility guy) and Green would be a perfect fit IMHO.

I don't know bbxxj. We need all the money we can get this year and I feel fine with Infante at SS and Diory Hernandez if Infante or Esco is out.

Nick Green is a solid backup infielder. Early on he had some trouble fielding but towards the end of his run as the starting shortstop he was actually doing a pretty solid job. He also had some key at bats for our team this year, I wouldn't mind seeing him come back in the same role Alex Cora used to.

@Darion
I don't imagine a .669 OPSing journeyman infielder would get much more than 1M. If I had to guess I could see him getting around 800K which isn't much more than we would be giving Diory.
But, if for some strange reason, he gets into the 2M+ range we should certainly pass and let Diory sit on the bench.

You mean Nick Green isn't going to be the centerpiece of a Felix Hernandez trade?

Of course not!
Hes going to be the centerpiece of the Adrian Gonzalez trade.. duh! ;-)

Once they re-sign him.. oops. Just ignore me, night shifts screw my brain up!

@bbxxj,
I just feel we don't need him this coming year. We have options AND he is undergoing surgery today. MAYBE for a minor league deal, but I just think he should be the last thing to think about if we even do go after him. Too many things to do this offseason.

The Rockies will need a backup SS/3B next year after they dump Quintanilla and Atkins. So, I can see Green landing there.

You took Heidi Whatney from the captain, Nick. Didn't you hear about what happens to sox players who hook up with other players ladies? They don't come back. Reference: Keith Foulke and Orlando Cabrera 2004!

As crazy as this sounds, I wouldn't mind seeing the Twins make a 1-yr offer to Gathright. It would be insurance for Delmon "the Butcher" Young and his potential to be a defensive liability.

Joey, if you're out of work again next September, give Theo another call.

"You took Heidi Whatney from the captain, Nick."
Players that get it on with Heidi suddenly can't hit anymore.
