« Rockies Decline Option On Rafael Betancourt | Main | Ben Sheets Plans To Be Ready For Spring Training »
Next up in our Offseason Outlook series, the Giants. Their likely commitments for 2010:
C - Buster Posey - $400K
C - Eli Whiteside - $400K
1B - Travis Ishikawa - $401K
2B - Freddy Sanchez - $6MM
SS - Edgar Renteria - $9MM
3B - Pablo Sandoval - $402K
IF - Kevin Frandsen - $410K
IF - Emmanuel Burriss - $404K
IF/OF - Eugenio Velez - $404K
LF - Fred Lewis - $440K
CF - Aaron Rowand - $12MM
RF - Nate Schierholtz -$401K
OF - Andres Torres - $400K
SP - Tim Lincecum - $650K+
SP - Matt Cain - $4.25MM
SP - Jonathan Sanchez - $455K+
SP - Barry Zito - $18.5MM
SP - Joe Martinez - $400K
Other candidates: Ryan Sadowski, Madison Bumgarner
RP - Jeremy Affeldt - $4MM
RP - Brian Wilson - $480K+
RP - Brandon Medders - $475K+
RP - Merkin Valdez - $401K
RP - Sergio Romo - $402K
RP - Dan Runzler - $400K
RP - Waldis Joaquin - $400K
Non-tender candidates: Ryan Garko
The Giants have about $62MM committed before arbitration raises to Lincecum, Sanchez, Wilson, and Medders. I'm assuming Garko is non-tendered. The pitchers' raises won't be cheap - they'll push the Giants up to the $80MM range. The Giants entered the 2009 season with an $82.6MM payroll, and it's not expected to change drastically. Nonetheless Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News suggested last month that the Giants have enough money to afford "one free agent starting pitcher and one modestly-priced free agent hitter."
Baggarly makes a good point, that the Giants really don't have the payroll space to dabble in the $15MM+ range of Matt Holliday or Jason Bay. GM Brian Sabean at least has positional flexibility with possible acquisitions - the infield and outfield corners are all fair game. Dan Uggla, Johnny Damon, and Mark DeRosa have already been named in various rumors. The Giants are pretty weak at the corners aside from Sandoval, so importing two bats would be ideal.
With payroll looking tight, it doesn't make sense to bring catcher Bengie Molina back. Instead, that money should be applied toward a starting pitcher to round out the rotation. Rumor has it, the Giants hope to re-sign Brad Penny. If he gets too pricey, there are plenty of similar free agents in the $5-8MM price range. It appears that the Giants would like to give Bumgarner some Triple A seasoning.
Sabean has had his troubles at the top end of the free agent market, but last offseason he made shrewd minor league signings with Juan Uribe and Medders. I didn't mind the Affeldt, Randy Johnson and Bob Howry signings either, so maybe the payroll limitations will work in the Giants' favor and give us the best of Sabean.

Ryan Garko may be the platoon player with Murphy that the Mets are lookin for. He hit lefties to a .308/.391/.479 line.

Talk about a poor usage of payroll:
Barry Zito $18.5 million
Freddy Sanchez $6 million
Aaron Rowand $12 million
Edgar Renteria $9 million
That's $45.5 million spent on mediocre players, well done!
Posted by: Peter D | November 13, 2009 at 02:47 PM
How is TIM LINCECUM getting paid 650K while BARRY F-ING ZITO is getting 18.5 Million!! Wow the giants front office needs to be fired!
Posted by: TargetField2010 | November 13, 2009 at 02:48 PM
Scott Barnes and Tim Alderson should of been traded for Adam Dunn.
Dunn is EXACTLY what the Giants need. Fred Lewis is one of the worst defenders I have even seen so its not a big deal.

People forget Zito was a beast. And that Lincecum is only 25..
Posted by: humannature | November 13, 2009 at 02:59 PM
It's amazing how many of their players are either making the league minimum (or close to it) or else entirely too much money (as Peter D noted).
TargetField2010: The Zito contract is obviously terrible, but Lincecum's salary is low because he is just now reaching arbitration. He will be getting a raise over his current salary, though -- that's what the "+" after "$650K" means.
Posted by: WY | November 13, 2009 at 03:02 PM
Geez Tim. I would hope you wouldn't mind the signing of Jeremy Affeldt. He was only the best F/A relief pitcher in baseball last year. His 2 year 8 million contract was a steal, for the amount of games he helped preserve wins in.

I understand why lincecum is being paid what he is. He's under team control and not eligible for arbitration yet, his payday is to come. I was just making a comparison about how to get production from a starting pitcher without having to waste 18.5 million on an overhyped free agent.
Oh and about his being a "beast" maybe for 1 season and he was clearly on the decline when he was given that obsence contract. I don't consider a starter with a record hovering around .500 with an era a shade under 4 a "beast".
Posted by: TargetField2010 | November 13, 2009 at 03:10 PM
It seems few teams have more than 3-10m in payroll they can take on, yet articles continue to describe how many free agents are priced in the 5-8m range.
A suggestion for folks working on this site: sum all the available payroll for 2010 and start dividing it between the many free agents. Then we can see how much (or little) money they actually will make.

I wouldnt say the giants rotation is as good as people say. After tim and cain, nobody is reliable.
Posted by: johan is GOD | November 13, 2009 at 03:17 PM
if they dont add some reliable pitchers or one or 2 big boppers, the giants are my 2010 bust team
Posted by: johan is GOD | November 13, 2009 at 03:19 PM
I think the Giants are in a great position for next year. Lincecum and Cain is a great 1-2 and with Zito, Sanchez, Bumgarner, and possibly Penny that is a very solid rotation. The bullpen actually looks pretty strong as well.
They need to add 2 bats and they are there. An outfielder, maybe Dye, and then a corner infielder, Nick Johnson or Dan Uggla, and then this team should really be able to win the NL West.
Posted by: Pat Metzger | November 13, 2009 at 03:21 PM
No offense but I think the best F/A signing for a reliever was Belisario.
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | November 13, 2009 at 03:22 PM
The Giants have the payroll flexibility to go above what they state, they just won't. A ridiculous contract for Zito (it is well known former ownership group lead Magowan wanted that deal done, he envisioned Zito being the face of the franchise as Bonds was near his end) and Sabean's misjudgement on Rowand makes them gun-shy to say the least. That and the fact they are the only privately financed stadium in the majors, with a $20+ million mortgage payment yearly they have to make. Whispers here and there state they might be finished with that obligation in the next year or 2 but we'll have to wait and see. With the new Comcast tv deal, the highest priced beers in the majors, not to mention the cha-cha bowl's and "Say Hey" sausages...they have a huge stream of revenue. They could easily go 90-100 million if they really had to. You have to keep in mind we're the 4th largest market in the country, and we draw very well every year. Whether or not they will sink all that money back into the team remains to be seen. It's one of the biggest gripes of the Giant's diehard, that they're only out to "make money". Me personally, I'd like to see them finish paying off the ballpark and sink the mortgage payment into the payroll or the minor league system. Let's not line the pockets of the ownership group, lets bring a champinship to SF.

I love being a Giants fan, but I can't see them being a playoff team with stupid contracts like Barry Zito and Aaron Rowand. If they are going to keep their payroll around 80-90 mil, they need to invest in cheap younger guys. They don't need to sign another big contract for 1 guy that won't be a deciding factor on whether they make the playoffs. When Zito and Rowand get the F outa here (3 years max for Big Zit) that's when we sign someone like Holliday, until then we're playing the waiting game. THANKS SABEAN!!
Posted by: kent.skrondahl | November 13, 2009 at 03:43 PM
I'm not sure if it's completely off the books yet or not (I had heard it was the last year), but the Giant's were still paying deferred money last season to Bonds (5 million) and Benitez (not sure how much). All payroll projections I have seen never mention those 2 numbers. That shows we have 5-10 million that wasn't even listed as payroll going out to various former players. If that is in fact falling off the books, you can see where the Giants have increased payroll flexibility.
Posted by: Humm Baby | November 13, 2009 at 03:47 PM
@ TargetField2010- You are an effin moron. Have you heard of something called arbitration? Lincecum's 650 K will go up drastically as he prepares for his first year. Idiot.
Posted by: lincecum4cy | November 13, 2009 at 03:53 PM
Sabean/Bochy love positional flexibility. In this I agree. So at the corners:
Bowker= Lf/1b
Panda= 3b/1b
Ishikawa= 1b
Plenty o' OFs to cover RF, while backing up CF.
Flexibility will be needed to sort through the OF depth chart next spring. Garko does seem less than ideal, but even at 2mil he has value. I'm torn. LF needs some pop, and 3b/1b still needs depth too.
DeRosa makes a ton of sense, if he isn't Cap'n Regression next year.
Posted by: JLHC | November 13, 2009 at 03:54 PM
Posey will be in the minors this year, he needs a year of seasoning. Whiteside knows how to manage the pitching staff and would do just fine as a 1 year stop-gap, however his bat is lacking. I see the Giants signing a veteran catcher on a 1-2 year contract until Posey is ready, with Whiteside backing him up. I really don't think Travis is it at 1st base, and I think that is where you'll see a free agent or trade acquisition. Preferably someone with some pop who can play 1st or 3rd (Pablo at the other corner), but most likely someone along the lines of Beltre, Johnson, etc. We'll see what Sanchez gives us with a full year at 2nd (I think he'll do great), and Renteria can't get any worse than he was last year (at least he's gone in a year).
Posted by: Humm Baby | November 13, 2009 at 04:04 PM
Up the middle, Renteria and Sanchez will need a good-great back-up. Look at our 2b/SS last year, horrendous. Without Uribe we would have swooned so much harder.
While he may regress back to his career avgs next year, he fits the middle IF need with a bit of power and excellent clubhouse chemistry with our team.
If he ends up getting starting money elsewhere, I'd wait to see how our OFs do in winter ball, then trade one (Lewis?) or a 2-mil Garko or Merkin Valdez/Waldis Joaquin for mid-IF depth. The Indians, Rays, & Angels all have that depth, & would be excellent trade targets.
Posted by: JLHC | November 13, 2009 at 04:05 PM
Ya Ya Ya, we all know the whole zito/rowand sabean bashing routine but all the bitching and whining doesnt get us anywhere especially since they resigned sabean. if the giants can land uribe, penny, and uggla i'd say its a successful offseason. just find a way to keep the bullpen the way it is and bumgarner in the organization.

And does anyone agree with me that they should take a chance and give posey the starting role instead of wasting FA money on a one year vet catcher deal?

and johan is GOD, zito has proven himself realiable this year. his numbers may not show it but you watched all his starts the year you'd think otherwise

Yeah Posey will outhit Molina next year.. Sign Pudge as a back up for a couple million..
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | November 13, 2009 at 04:24 PM
I agree with you regarding Penny, Doug. He did well at At&t and I personally would like to see him come back.
Posted by: Humm Baby | November 13, 2009 at 04:25 PM
I don't even think 2 mil is worth investing in a vet backup catcher when theyre on such a tight budget and have a solid defensive backup in whiteside
Posted by: Doug | November 13, 2009 at 04:26 PM
Brad Ausmus is a FA, I believe. One of the smartest players in baseball history. SoCal boy might not be down with the SanFranFreakShow, but if he is, one mil would get you the best mentor available. Better than Pudge or any Molina...
2mil probably gets you Zaun, who's also a good mentor with better offensive security.
How dumb does it look that Sabean flipped Ronny Paulino for Hector Correa after getting him from the Phils? he would have been an excellent stopgap.
Posey's a great learner, but my experience tells me he needs a little AAA time still, especially if Steve Decker gets the nod to manage at Fresno.
Posted by: JLHC | November 13, 2009 at 04:40 PM
As was mentioned derrered money is coming off the books. That give's the gaint's an extra 5-10M to play with. I think they should go after Nady for LF @ 2yrs 12M, Nick Johnson 1b @ 2 yrs 12-14M, and one of the back up catcher's for 1 or 2M. Or they could do a backloaded Bay deal 5yrs 75M with the last 2yrs at 20M when Rowand's deal is off the books.
Realistically the Giant's will probably go cheap and keep the Garko/Ish platoon at 1B, resign Molina and Uribe, and pick up a Penny type starter.
Posted by: WillieMaysField | November 13, 2009 at 05:24 PM
The Giants don't have much money to play with so I think Holliday/Bay are out of the question. I want to see the Giants make a run at CF Cameron and 1B Johnson. Moving the avg defensive Rowand to LF would really strengthen the OF defense, which will help the pitching staff and improve the offense with Cameron. Johnson provides a big OBP upgrade which the Giants desperately need. Both of these guys will get reasonable short term contracts that they will actually be able to live up to. Then just pick one of the Penny/Harden/Sheets/Bedard types that will take a lower base salary with incentives. If there is a little left over try and sign a back up catcher like pudge or Zuan.
Posted by: TheGiantsDidWhat? | November 13, 2009 at 05:45 PM
My free agent hopes and predictions:
Resign Penny @ 2yr. 8mil.
Resign Uribe @ 2yr 5mil.
Sign Nick Johnson @ 2yr. 12Mil.
Sign Pudge (backup and mentor Posey) @ 1 yr. 1.5 mil.
After those three signings the infield would be full and our pitching would be stacked, so it comes down to the outfield...
Obviously a backloaded deal for Bay would be ideal but I don't think the Giants are a favorite for him, just a possibility.
That leaves: Byrd, Dye, DeRosa, Uggla (trade for to play left), and Damon
I don't want Dye, Byrd could be interesting, but DeRosa is probably the best option due to his versatility and power. Damon is also an interesting candidate, but I think he'll resign w/ the Yanks and I don't trust trading someone good to throw Uggla in LF.
Posted by: Leland11 | November 13, 2009 at 05:50 PM
If the Giants want to do anything next year, they need to get out and make a few surprising and bold moves.
Brad Penny should be resigned to turn this Rotation into a strength again. They need to be players in the Curtis Granderson trade talks, as well as the Dan Uggla trade talks.
Mark DeRosa is one of the only interesting free agents that are in their price range. Nick Johnson and Carlos Delgado are the other interesting guys. The rest are going to be over-paid and under-performing.
If they were able to add guys like Granderson and DeRosa in the outfield, along with Nick Johnson at 1B and Brad Penny in the Starting Rotation, they will be in the conversation come September. Without additions like these, they will get worse.
C Posey, 1B Johnson, 2B Sanchez, SS Renteria, 3B Sandoval, LF DeRosa, CF Granderson, RF Schierholtz.
Maybe an Aaron Rowand and Prospects for Granderson and Willis?
Posted by: slr5607 | November 13, 2009 at 08:10 PM
ive been saying this for days if we can trade a package around J. Sanchez for Dan Uggla and sign Mike Cameron or Jermaine Dye that would be a big boost and Posey will be ready by late May he's already had a year of seasoning in the Minors
1. Torres/Velez
2. Sanchez
3. Sandoval
4. Uggla
5. Cameron/Dye
6. Rowand
7. Pudge?/Posey
8. Renteria
thats a great lineup with a staff of Lincecum, Cain, Zito, Penny and eventually Bumgarner who dominated in his September debut I don't see how someone can say our pitching isnt great and our bullpen is very good

Uggla is awful. If all you want is a guy who hits homeruns and does nothing else then he's your guy. Poor defense, poor avg, and tons of strike outs.
Posted by: kellum | November 13, 2009 at 08:57 PM
The Giants were tied with the Dodger's for fewest runs allowed in all of baseball. What they desperately need is about .5 runs a game. No on Dye, maybe 3 or 4 years ago. Fangraphs has him as one of the worst outfielders in baseball. He 2nd half last year was a disaster. That's why I'd like to see Nady in LF. His defensive #'s play even in LF. He also can play 1st against lefties if Garko is non-tendered.
Maybe an Aaron Rowand and Prospects for Granderson and Willis?
Posted by: slr5607 | November 13, 2009 at 08:10 PM
I don't know why the tiger's are shopping Granderson. He's only making 5.5M this season and there money problems go away after 2010. Rowand's owed 36M over the next three years. Granderson and Willis about 37M. Why would the tiger's do that? They only free up 5.5M this year, but lose in the long run.
Posted by: WillieMaysField | November 13, 2009 at 09:05 PM

actually home runs IS the main thing the Giants want along with OBP which Uggla did improve this year
Posted by: Bleacher_bum_SF | November 13, 2009 at 09:16 PM
I don't think find a HR is necessarily what the Giants need... they need a rock solid hitter for the #4 and #5 slot. Someone who has HR power is a plus, but gap power will actually be just as porductive. To me guys like Johnson and Nady fit the bill more than Bay and Uggla. Holliday to me is worth the investment because to me his bat is a better fit for AT&T, but he's too expensive and wants too many years.
At the end of the day this team will live and die by the growth of their youth. Those that keep talking about power out of Ishi, well for those that have watched every game last season, if you haven't noticed he has tons of power, but really wasnt given the chance to adjust to ML pitching. When he was played consistently he got on a tear. I know people here just want to look at stats all day, but you give Ishi a fair shot and a hitting coach that knows how to break these kids in the ML (which i think Muellens is our guy) you may eventually see Ishi grow into an Adrian Gonzalez type player (who also started his career out slow). Another guy is John Bowker... if that guy can figure out ML pitching he's going to be another Holliday, mark my words.
We will compete in 2010, there is no doubt in my mind. But winning the division will come down to these young guys and Sabean not signing a crap FA that will just block them. Muellens is already doing a heck of a job with Ishi, Pill and Bowker. If we can just give them an environment where they dont have to perform like allstars day one, then i think we'll actually see we have a lot more talent than people give us credit for. And that is just the beginning... wait until guys like Kieschnick, Crawford and Neal emerge from the farm.
Also, those that think after Cain and Lincecum, the Giants staff is unreliable you need to watch the games. Zito was a great pitcher this year and suffered from the worst run support in the majors. Paired with an offense like the Dodgers or Phillies and he's a 15+ Winner in '09. Sanchez was the only one that fit the bill of inconsistent but that was all in his first half which was for the most part a disaster.
Posted by: Lincecum_Says_GSP | November 14, 2009 at 12:30 AM
BTW... my lineups.
If they get Cameron, Nady and one of Zaun/Pudge
1. Schierholtz(RF)
2. Sanchez (2B)
3. Sandoval (3B)
4. Nady (1B)
5. Cameron (CF)
6. Rowand (LF)
7. Posey/Zaun (C)
8. Renteria (SS)
If they get Johnson, Nady and one of Zaun/Pudge
1. Schierholtz(RF)
2. Sanchez (2B)
3. Sandoval (3B)
4. Nady (LF)
5. Johnson(1B)
6. Rowand (CF)
7. Posey/Zaun (C)
8. Renteria (SS)
Bench:
Velez (RF), Torres (CF), Bowker (LF,1B), Ishikawa (1B), Burriss (SS/2B)
Rotation: Lincecum, Zito, Cain, Penny/Sheets, Sanchez
Pen: Wilson, Affeldt, Romo, Medders, Runzler, Martinez
I think the last man on the roster will either be a 3B cheap risk type guy like Troy Glaus or a farm hand like Matt Downs or Ryan Rohlinger
Posted by: Lincecum_Says_GSP | November 14, 2009 at 01:00 AM
Sorry Bleacher but I still disagree. The Giants struggled with the clutch hit last year and bringing someone in like Uggla will not fill that gap. He is anything but clutch.
Also, Nick Johnson? Uh No... He's another Ray Durham. Can never seem to stay healthy.
All they really need IMO opinion is one big hitter who hits for avg but that of course that comes at high price.
Side Note: I expect big things from pablo this coming year, who I've heard started lifting weights for the first time ever in his life.

Isn't Lincecum eligible for arbitration this year as a Super Two? If so, then he's due a hell of a lot more than $650K. More in the range of $8-10 million I'd guess.

I like the Cameron and Granderson ideas. I think Granderson would put up monster numbers in the NL at AT&T park, but I'm not sure the Giants have the prospects to land Granderson without giving up Bumgarner/Posey.
Cameron would be a real solid pick up. I would rather see the Giants sign Beltre than trade for Uggla. Uggla will cost good prospects, and his defense will be atrocious at 3B. His power numbers will drop, and we will be stuck with a .240/20 HR hitter.
Nady played in like 25 games last year, and wasn't lighting it up 2 years ago.
Bay is overrated. He will be expensive, and he won't live up to his contract.
Cameron, Granderson, Beltre, and Ausmus.
Let Posey and Bumgarner learn on the job.
That would be my plan.
Posted by: JT | November 14, 2009 at 12:15 PM
JT have you looked at Nady's 2008 numbers? .305/.357/.510...
i would say thats a hell of an improvement for either LF or 1B. He will be cheap as he's a risk, and for us its a risk worth taking IMO.
But i agree on you Granderson comments... i still think Sabs can get it done without moving posey or bumgarner... Neal, Kieschnick, Noonan, Gillespie, Crawford, Wheeler are still nice chips but to be honest the Giants would probably better off in the long haul holding onto those guys because when rowand and renteria are gone we're going to need some of them.

Nick Johnson gives you a serious shot of OBP which is something this offense needs no matter what position it comes from. Johnson's MO is never going to be HR power, but the guy is patient and he has gap power which at AT&T is, in my eyes, a bigger deal than HR power.
Now I'm not saying Johnson's the answer because to you're point Ishi has more power, which is soemthing people constantly overlook. Ishi has a power bat... what he lacks is patience at the plate and the discipline to look for a picth to hit. If they give him a true shot to man 1B (and not this play every two games and never against lefties which killed any growth he started to show) I think people will be pleasantly suprised what this guy can do, especially after he works with muellens this offseason.
Posted by: Lincecum_Says_GSP | November 14, 2009 at 12:42 PM
Kellum: Care to name the season Durham had on over 400 OBP? Or the years the Giants had on men on the 25 man roster that could use the play time in his position? So, No, Johnson is not another Durham. I would be perfectly happy with Johnson’s 90-110 games a year on a 1 year contract for under $8MM. Park that OBP in front of Sandoval and see if we can get a couple extra runs.

I like the idea of Zaun at catcher. LHB that is decent at avoiding extra outs and has not played a full season for a few years so not likely to view as “The Answer” every time Poesy stubs his toe.
**
If management ups the payroll chasing after Holliday is a no brainer. Assuming Management does not up the payroll Cameron has the strongest case of the rest of the current free agent OF. The rest of them does not impress much at all.
**
Uggla depends if the Fish realizes he is first baeman without the track record there. If they keep talking about him as an elite second baseman they can enjoy the “privilege” of writing his checks in 2010.

Find a nice 1 year commitment for the #5 starter for say under $7MM (I don’t think Baumgardner’s secondary pitches are ready yet for the MLB and going in with just Joey Martinez for the #5 is a bit short sighted) and this team is a ready to roll as it is ever going to get given the first 3 moves of this off season.

a good off season for me would be keeping Uribe(trade Rent and Rowand if possible),acquiring Uggla and seriously right now with the rotation we have break the bank and bring in Bay.
lineup
Velez,RF
Sanchez,2B
Sandoval,1B
Bay,LF
Uggla,3B
Uribe,SS
Rowand,CF
Whiteside/Posey,C
that lineup will supply runs and we could take the division with that team. I don't want to see Nick Johnson because he's injury prone and will waste the money and the same goes for Mike Cameron because he's much older we need to get younger and healthier. Those are the 3 main things we need to do as well as lock up Lincecum.

B&O Pride... Cameron would be a smart pickups for the Giants. He's a consistent hitter, posting an OPS around .800 every year, 20-25 HRs every year and he plays awesome defense. On top of that He's proven he can hit in pitchers parks (ie Petco). Plus consider we wont have a young OF ready until at least next year with Neal or Kieschnick (unless Bowker steps up at the plate... which i think he may).
Also I would note put Velez anywhere near AT&T's RF... they need to play Schierholtz there from day 1. His defense in RF is on par with Winn's except he has a canon for an arm.

i love schierholtz in right field. i really enjoy seeing players hit the ball off the right field wall, like posada did, and try to make it to second base when schierholtz guns them out going into second. he has great speed. had an inside the park home run this year. also he can hit a few home runs. he's a great guy that can bat anywhere in the line up.

schierholtz will emerge as a johnny damon type player. He has gap power which fits AT&T perfect, plays great defense, has speed and has a laser guided missile for an arm. They need to give him RF and leave him there. Let the power bat come from who ever is going to man LF next year.

Its pretty simple Giants...its time to show some sac and join the big boy league! Pump that payroll to 100+mil, sign either Bay or Holliday. Bring back both Uribe and Penny. Trade for Uggla or AdGon. Forget Bengie, let Posey/Whiteside/Pablo..or possibly sign another back up on the cheap.
Rowand-CF
Sanchez-2B/3B
Pablo- 3B/1B/C
Bay/Holliday- LF
AdGon/Uggla- 1B/3B
Renteria/Uribe- SS
Nate/Bowker- RF
Buster/Whiteside/Other-C
Lincecum
Cain
Penny
Zito
Pucetas/MadBum/Other
or
Sanchez (if you can keep him and still make a trade)
Trade Sanchez/FLewis and a grab bag for AdGon or try to hold on the Sanchez in a trade for Uggla....maybe ship FLewis+ a handful from the minors.
Boom...thats a contender.

giants need : nady, uggla, pudge and damon
giants give: ishikawa, zito j sanchez and shierholtz
that's all
Posted by: giantspandaman24 | November 16, 2009 at 07:05 PM
nady... yes
pudge... yes
uggla... depends what we give up
damon... haha no
zito isn't going anywhere and honestly if he performs next year like he did last year i'm fine with that. Zito was fine last year... he will blow up about 5-7 times a year but other than that he's back. Honestly if you watched the games, you'd know he could/should have won at least 14-15 games if not more. In fact all our picthers would have had 15+ if we had a better offense (aside from sanchez whose first half was pretty bad)

People who think Posey is good for next year are retards to say the least. I live in tempe,az and watch this teams fall ball players. Posey needs a good year in the minors before even being close to ready for the majors. His game-calling is sub-par and takes an inside out approach to the ball often.
Zito's performance as we all know isnt worth 18.5 mil, but he was a good 3 spot this year. Like Linceum Says GSP said, anyone who truly watchs giants baseball knows that zito had one of the leafues lowest runs supports.
Penny pitched well for SF with the exception of that horrendous Dodger series, but if they can nag him for 5 mil, they should sign him.
Lincecum Says GSP
We will never get nady pudge and uggla, we dont have that much room in the cap to aquire three, and Sabean is reluctant in trades after giving up what he did this year. I would be happy with Uggla .
Djperalta,
are you on crack? that will never happen in a million years, i doubt giants will be in running for bay/holliday, and even if we got one, no way we get adgon too.
