2011 Contract Issues: Atlanta Braves

By Tim Dierkes | April 8, 2010 at 4:20pm CDT

A look at the Braves' options after the season:

  • Closer Billy Wagner has a $6.5MM club option with a $250K buyout.  Wagner has looked nasty in the early going.
  • Infielder Omar Infante has a $2.5MM club option with a $250K buyout.  The Braves figure to exercise if Infante has a season like '08 and '09.

Troy Glaus, David Ross, Eric Hinske, and Takashi Saito are the Braves' eligible free agents; the group is guaranteed $7.55MM this year.  The Braves players on multiyear deals aren't in line for significant raises in 2011, with Brian McCann and Nate McLouth totaling a $3MM bump.

First-time arbitration players include Jair Jurrjens, Yunel Escobar, Martin Prado, and Eric O'Flaherty.  Jurrjens and Escobar are candidates to be locked up long-term, but Jurrjens is represented by Scott Boras.  Regardless of extensions, Jurrjens and Escobar will receive big raises.

Peter Moylan is a second-year arbitration player, while Melky Cabrera will be eligible for the third time.  Matt Diaz will enter the process for the fourth time.

A list of players that the Braves need to give an extension:

Infante – 2/6 – He’s probably the best utility player in baseball, so they should re-sign him.
Ross – 2/5 – He will be the best back-up catcher on the free agent market.
Hinske – 1/2 – Only if he does decent.
Jurrjens – 5/25-30 – He’s hitting arbitration, so why not try to re-sign him to a long-term contract.
Escobar – 4/20-30 – Just like Jurrjens, and they don’t have a decent SS for a few more years.
    Prado – 4-5/15-20 – Like Escobar, they don’t have a decent 2B for a few years.
Moylan – 2/4-6 – Can take over for Saito.
Diaz – 2/5-6 – One of the best players Braves have.
    O’Flaherty – 2/2-3 -Left-handed set-up guy.
    Cabrera – 2/6-8 – Cover arbitration years.
Hanson – 5-7/25-35 – Cover arbitration and and maybe a free agent year.
Heyward – 6/30-40 – Just because they need to do this.
Kawakami – 2/10 – Too take them to when Teheran and Vizcaino are ready.
McCann – 3-4/45-60 – Cover option year and 2-3 years of free agency.

Nope. One of the best period! NOWAY should crappy Milky be getting so many ab’s over him. Hopefully the Braves trade him to a team that will give him more PT.

The biggest thing imo is getting rid of Lowe. By any means necessary. I think hr’s be even worse this year that last.

bravesred, do you actually think we can lockup jair for that cheap? he is one of the better pitchers in baseball and he has bora$$ as an agent…maybe flip flop his and escobars contracts and that might happen but it may even take more money for both of them…they are both great players

Dump Cabrera and Kawakami ASAP; in fact, give them away to any team that will pay their contract. They are uselass
