Tigers, Rangers Losing Interest In Lowell

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 26, 2010 at 4:20pm CDT

The Tigers and Rangers have been eyeing Mike Lowell, but both teams are losing interest in the infielder, according to Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com. The Rangers appear to be pursuing Jorge Cantu aggressively, so their interest in Lowell has faded.

The Tigers had amateur scouting director David Chadd watch Lowell rehab with the Pawtucket Red Sox recently, according to Edes. Detroit just lost infielders Carlos Guillen and Brandon Inge to the DL, but a big league source tells Edes that the Tigers aren’t likely to obtain Lowell.

Lowell, 36, has hit .213/.308/.350 in 91 plate appearances this season, but has recently been sidelined with a hip injury. About $4.2MM remains on Lowell’s contract, but the Red Sox would take on a substantial chunk of salary in any trade.

I think it would be fitting, if Lowell retired as a Red Sock. Plus, honestly, is Lowell really an upgrade over the in house options of the Tigers and Rangers.

I can say with 100% certainty that Lowell is better than Jeff larish, Ramon Santiago, don Kelly and Scott sizemore, yes

I’m going to have to disagree. Defensively, speed, and with Will Rhymes,
they can probably provide better than Lowell.

You’d probably be 100% wrong. I’ll give you Jeff Larish and Don Kelly, but I doubt Lowell is much of an upgrade over Santiago or Sizemore. Both of those guys can play some decent defense and Sizemore should bat better then what he’s shown so far…

I’d rather just keep him at this point as beltre and youk are both banged up, rather than dump him for a random nothing of a prospect….

Eh. I’m not crying over the possibility of losing out on Mike Lowell.

someone on MTS said Phil Rogers on MLBN said the Tigers were “expressing interest” in Hunter Pence of Houston.

That in my mind would be an intriguing addition, to say the least. I’d prefer him over Dunn, isn’t he also under team control for a couple more seasons too?

As a Tigers fan I hope Dombrowski is ignoring calls from the cubs. Unless they are willing to trade us Aramis Ramirez.

Aramis Ramirez is hitting .227 and has an OPS of .723, and oh yeah dude has a $14.6 Million PLAYER option for next year. With all the bad contracts finally coming off the books after this season why on earth would the Tigers want to go anywhere near that?
