Indians Acquire Joe Martinez

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 4, 2011 at 3:37pm CDT

The Indians acquired Joe Martinez from the Pirates for a played to be named or cash considerations, the teams announced today. The Pirates acquired Martinez and John Bowker from the Giants for Javier Lopez at last year's trade deadline, and went on to designate Martinez for assignment late last month.

The right-hander posted a 4.12 ERA in 19 2/3 innings for the Giants and Pirates last year, walking as many hitters as he struck out (9). He also spent time at Triple-A as starter and reliever, posting a 3.94 ERA with 6.8 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9 in 109 2/3 minor league innings. Martinez, a 2005 12th round pick by the Giants, turns 28 next month.

Martinez has two options remaining, according to MLB.com's Jordan Bastian (on Twitter). That enables the Indians to demote him to the minors without exposing him to other teams.

you know your team is in trouble when the biggest offseason move they make involves a trade with the pirates

I have no problem with them acquiring Martinez.

May I once again request that they get more outfielders to sort through? The Indians don’t have but Choo-everyone else is question mark, either performance or injury. They need more and better outfielders to sort through.

    Grady Sizemore: CF/LF
    Shin-Soo Choo RF
    Michael Brantley LF/CF
    Austin Kearns LF/RF
    Trevor Crowe All OF spots
    Travis Buck LF
    Nick Weglarz LF
    Matt McBride C/1B/LF
    Jordan Henry CF/RF

The Indians have a pretty fair group of young OF’ers and vets that should give them more than enough coverage for the 2011 season.. and more prospects on the way.

Eli, I’m glad you are inspired by that group. I’m not. If Sizemore doesn’t come back, I’m not real thrilled about the options they have to replace him. He had a type of knee surgery that they just don’t know how he’ll respond.

I’d just feel better if they brought in a few more seasoned outfielders; if all goes well they trade ’em before the deadline and go with the youngsters.

I like what I saw of Joe Martinez on Brian Wilson’s show, Life With Brian. Good pickup for the Indians.
