Quick Hits: Athletics, Cabrera, Jeter, Braves, Janssen

By Zachary Links | February 21, 2011 at 10:53pm CDT

Let's take a look at some links for Monday night..

  • Jane Lee of MLB.com writes that Athletics manager Bob Geren believes that his club has improved by leaps and bounds this winter.
  • Recent addition Orlando Cabrera might not hold the Indians' starting second-base job for long, writes Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.
  • Yankees captain Derek Jeter is not going to be happy about the comments made by Hank Steinbrenner earlier today, writes Tyler Kepner of the New York Times.
  • David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution points out that Braves GM Frank Wren is now under contract for the same period as manager Fredi Gonzalez, whom he hired to replace Bobby Cox.  Earlier today the two sides agreed to a two-year contract extension.
  • There may not be a spot in the Blue Jays' bullpen for pitcher Casey Janssen but the veteran says he's not looking for a way out of Toronto, writes Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com.
  • New to San Diego, Jorge Cantu says that he's ready to produce even though he'll be asked to move around the diamond, writes MLB.com's Tom Singer.  The Padres offically inked Cantu to a one-year deal worth $850K towards the end of January.
  • Speaking of brand new members of the Pads, Kevin Frandsen is delighted to be back in the National League, tweets Dan Hayes of the North County Times.

I think it’s more likely Jeter will not care about and ignore the comments made by Steinbrenner.

I know Jeter isn’t likely to let what anyone says bother him but this is essentially his boss accusing him of giving less than 100% because they won. This has to be pretty insulting to Jeter specifically because of who he is and what he prides himself on.

It’s not like it’s the first time some Steinbrenner has taken a shot at Jeter. It comes with the territory.

I hope that he goes somewhere that he gets a chance to pitch in the bigs, but I don’t see that being Toronto right now. The bullpen is setting up to be Francisco, Dotel, Rauch, Fraser, Camp, Purcey, Villenoeva. I have always liked Janssen but I don’t see him in Toronto this year.

There is a possibility some arms may get traded and I wouldn’t be surprised if Villen sucks, Jansenn could be his replacement.

I am sure he’ll pitch for the Jays sometime during the year.

I am happy about the Wren extension. I think the Braves are About to go on a long playoff run again with this farm system coming up one by one like this. Hanson, Heyward, Minor, Freeman, Teheran, Delgado, then Vizciano… Not to mention what we develop over the next few seasons

Seriously though what owner says that about his own players? What happened to Jeter being the face of the franchise? I’m all for equal-opportunity criticism but come on. Can anyone else recall an owner calling out a player recently like this?

If I had to pay Jeter $51 million for 3 years after last season I’d be a little upset myself.

I feel like if at this point if John Henry came out and said, “CC is fat and Jeter will be awful this year” that Cashman and Hank would probably agree and have a good laugh about it.

John Henry and George always had a good relationship. My point is more towards Hank and Cashman just trashing their players this offseason.

Cashman didn’t trash anyone at all. He never once said anything negative about Jeter or Soriano’s ability. Saying that Jeter might have to move from SS is far from trashing him.

Am I crazy thinking the A’s will win the AL West behind Cy Young Brett Anderson? I think that he will step up to be a true ace, and the offensive additions will make the A’s better than the Rangers.

I just think the Cy Young Brett Anderson part is off. And with their offense it’s still the Ranger’s division to lose; however, the A’s, I believe, have a pretty solid shot at being the division champs this year. Anderson or Gonzalez are my bets to be the ace of the staff. Like most teams as well, that 5th starter for the A’s is crucial, no matter how much depth they have there

I wouldn’t count Cahill out of that ace discussion. His improvement from the 2009 and 2010 seasons was quite impressive. His strikeout rates may never be up to what we traditionally think of as an ace but Greg Maddux was never a strikeout king. My point is if Cahill can continue to harness his control he’s going to be one of the tougher pitchers in the AL.

Right now the way things stand I think the A’s could very well have the best rotation in the AL and they may very well give the Giants and Phils rotations a run for their money. I still think the Rangers have the slight edge overall in the division, but I’d be surprised if the A’s aren’t in the race.
