Red Sox Re-Sign Matt Fox

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 2, 2011 at 3:29pm CDT

The Red Sox announced that they re-signed right-hander Matt Fox to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to Major League Spring Training. The Red Sox claimed Fox off of waivers from the Twins last September, then designated him for assignment last month before releasing him.

Fox recorded five outs in a Red Sox uniform after Boston claimed him. While with the Twins last year, the 2004 supplementary first rounder posted a 3.95 ERA with 7.6 K/9 and 3.7 BB/9 in 123 innings at Triple-A.

The Red Sox officially announced their minor league deals with Tony Pena, Paul Hoover and Hector Luna. Those players also get invitations to big league Spring Training and, along with Fox, were placed on the Triple-A Pawtucket roster.

Obligatory “World Series here we come” joke.

Obligatory witty and non-witty rivalry banter.

    That should cover the thread.

Translation: Haha you are online (?) saying that because you don’t want people to tell you how bad the Red Sox are with guys like Fox. 3.95 ERA haha probably zero wins.

        Summary: I’m a babbling loon

This is pretty blatantly sarcasm, so it’s almost as if they turned it into a troll post themselves by apparently not getting it.

Love the responses to that post. Love that 8 people ‘liked’ the posts of the people who didn’t get it.

It is what the island wanted…

They could give him #4, invite Yaz to a game against the Yanks, then Pedey, Scutaro and Cameron could light up Rivera to win the East! (This was an obscure joke. Whomever gets it first wins.)

I understand why the Sox and Yanks go looking for these players, cheap and maybe fill in a few games. I don’t quite get the players side though. They have almost no chance of playing in the bigs. They must like those AAA burger joints. Of course that’s probably still better than what the Pirates feed their players.

I’m sure if they were offered a big league deal they’d have taken it. Better off with a small chance to get back to the show than sit out the season and do far more harm to your career.

Maybe because these guys have some faith in their own ability? Confidence is not a rare trait among professional athletes, even if it conflicts with reality.

If you were good enough for AAA, you’d do it, too. So would I…
