“In fact, the GM says that he told relievers to be truthful with Torre and his staff when they were asked about their availability to pitch.”
Dodger pitchers inexplicably learned to fib for three years as well.

First Joel Sherman, now Ian Begley make the Yankees FO sound like a bunch of babies. “The Astros didn’t tell us Oswalt was available… Wah wah! It’s not my fault pitchers were over used…. Sniff sniff!”
Man up Yankees! There’s no crying in baseball!

3 sure things in life – Taxes dying and Yankee bashing

Dieing and Yankee bashing, yes. But, I think we need to aske Wesley Snipes about the third one.

I don’t know that simply asking relievers to be honest regarding their availability is enough. Ultimately, I think that the responsibility to protect the team’s pitchers belongs to the manager (and, to a lesser extent, the team’s front office) since I imagine that most pitchers are going to be eager to take the mound when given the opportunity. Players are generally lauded for their toughness and ability to play through fatigue and discomfort, so I’d put the onus on the manager to be responsible regarding pitch counts, pitching on back-to-back days, etc.
Not necessarily criticizing Torre in this case, just speaking in general terms.
