Remind me, please: What happens if — in January or February — the Phillies want to remove one of those just-protected players from their 40-main roster? They would have to put him through waivers, right? But a team that picked that player up off waivers would not have to keep him on their 25-man roster, the way they would have to keep a Rule 5 draftee? But would they have to put him on (and keep him on) their 40-man?

I think this is protection against Rule 5
Eugene_in_Oregon
Yes, I understand that part (i.e., putting them on the 40-man is protection against the Rule 5 draft). What I’m trying to understand better is what happens if you put them on the 40-man now then remove them later. If another team picks them up off waivers, is it just like any other waiver transaction or do the Rule 5-type requirements still apply?
leachim2
Just like any other.

i think the player has to be returned to his former team, but i might be wrong.

players with less than 4 years pro experience are exempt & so are players who started at 18 with less than 5 years pro experience. Today is the day when you count this season’s experience to the exempt players and decide on adding them to the roster.
For example, this was 22 year old Travis D’Arnaud’s 5th pro season. So, he gets added to Jays 40-man. Once you are on 40-man, you are eligible for 25 man MLB roster and start into your 3 seasons of optional assignments to minors if you don’t make the 25-man.

Want to nab Gillies from Phillies, fellow Nats fan? 🙂
Abraham Zapruder
Bowker, Mathieson, Kratz, Romero and Garcia are all candidates for removal from the 40 man roster if the Phils need space.
Phillies_Aces35
I don’t think they’d remove Garcia given their infield depth or lack there of.
philliesfan136
Who’s Romero?

It should be interesting to see if the Blue Jays add Justin Jackson and Kevin Ahrens. I’m guessing probably not.
johnsmith4
Didn’t happen. They still have one open spot on 40-man. Interesting how JP’s money-ball draft picks (Jackson Ahrens Sobolewski Jeroloman & Van Kirk) didn’t make the cut.
Sniderlover
I don’t see why they would and I can’t see any team claiming either of them. They haven’t made it past High A (Jackson played a few games in AA I think) and they haven’t hit much. Unless they have a big year next year, I’m going to completely write them off.

Good move. Almonte is a solid chip to hold on to and would have definitely been grabbed 2 minutes after the deadline.
Backup_Slider
I’d say he’s more of a worth-protecting prospect in a farm system that is very thin in outfielders. I doubt seriously he’d be claimed, but it’s better to protect him if there’s a spot available for him given how few options they have in the upper minors at that position.
chris hines
Even if he was claimed I don’t think a team would waste a 25 man roster spot on someone who clearly can’t contribute this year. A lot like when the Padres claimed Nova only to send him back.

Have the Nationals protected Derek Norris yet?
LUWahooNatFan
Yes, he’s on the 40 man roster
Tony Forbes
Bue Jays?
jjs91
Surprised Adams got protected must mean his ankle is finally getting better
ProfessorIronHorse
I think the link to Carlos Gutierrez is wrong.
That said, I am surprised Oswaldo Arcia was added. I did not realize he was in danger from the rule 5 draft.

I like the kids my Mets added to the 40 man roster
MetsMagic
I don’t think we’ve seen any real talent come in droves like this since the 1980’s (when Reyes and Wright came up, they were on their own).
vtadave
Yeah since they are Mets, I’m sure all of them will be superstars.
ApMatechak
Thats cruel.

When can teams move players to the 60 day DL, as in Matsuzaka and Rich Hill? Is it after the Rule 5 draft I take it?
On a side note.. With the 3 additions the Sox just made.. They have 2 open spots.. Yikes…
AirmanSD
Before opening Day. Teams can’t hide guys on the 60 day DL during the offseason. When roster have to be set for the start of the season teams can then move players to the 60 day DL, until that if they are under contract or control they are either on the 40 man roster or exposed to waivers.

Ummm…Erasmo Ramirez doesn’t yet need to be on the Mariners’ 40-man roster, since he was signed prior to turning 18(in the summer of 2007) and has only been in the organization for 4 seasons, not 5(he signed on September 1, 2007, but that brief time in 2007 he wasn’t playing–he debuted in 2008).
Hence, he won’t be free to be taken in the Rule 5 Draft, sorry. 😉
Snoochies8
wonder who the top names that are eligible for the draft are
Fangaffes
Are you kidding me? The Red Sox added a guy who had John Lackey numbers in Single A to their 40 man roster?
