Minor Moves: Blackley, Gomez

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 16, 2012 at 11:05am CDT

Keeping track of the day's minor moves…

  • The Giants signed left-hander Travis Blackley to a minor league deal, MLB.com's Chris Haft reports. The 29-year-old Australia native has MLB experience with the 2004 Mariners and the 2007 Giants. He didn't pitch affiliated baseball in 2011.
  • The Red Sox announced that they signed first baseman Mauro Gomez to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to Spring Training. Gomez, 27, spent the 2011 season with the Braves' top affiliate and led the International League with 264 total bases. The Dominican Republic native had 24 homers and 34 doubles at Triple-A last year.

Gomez is a DH/1B, so he should have a better shot in the AL. If he has any shot at all.

He has no shot with the Red Sox though.

Travis Blackley pitched for KIA Tigers of Korean League entire 2011 season.
His record was 7-5 3.48 in 126.2 innings pitched.

thanks for that info – I knew he pitched for them, but hadn’t found his numbers yet.

Looks like Gomez has some pop in his bat. Not bad for an invite.

But it’s the Red Sox. He won’t play any earlier than September

He has some pretty good numbers in the minors not such a bad move but where will he play?

Ahh scouting report says he projects to be like kila ka’hula strikes out way to much and never walks.

How did a team like Atlanta, desperate for offense, not give Gomez a shot last season. They could of hid him or Freeman in RF and at least give it a shot.

Gomez can barely play first base, he’s more of a DH. So right field is out of the question for him.
