Phillies To Sign Mike Fontenot

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | April 13, 2012 at 3:40pm CDT

The Phillies have agreed to sign infielder Mike Fontenot, Jim Bowden of ESPN and MLB Network Radio tweets. The Phillies announced that the Paragon Sports International client gets a minor league deal.

Fontenot, who was released by the Giants toward the end of Spring Training, was said to be deciding between the Braves and Phillies. He posted a .227/.304/.377 line in 252 plate appearances at second base, shortstop and third base last year. The Fielding Bible Volume III suggests Fontenot provides adequate defense around the infield.

Philadelphia infielders Chase Utley, Michael Martinez and Ryan Howard are presently on the 15-day disabled list. The Phillies have been relying on Freddy Galvis at second base and Pete Orr on the bench so far this season.

Ivan DeJesus, Larry Bowa, Manny Trillo, etc etc etc, has any other 2 orgorganizations had infielders play for both teams?  Well, probably, but it at least seems like they have a lot of peeps that have fit into this niche’

The Phillies just got worse.  Subtraction by addition.

Its a minor league deal and if he makes the roster hes replacing Pete Orr so really whats the big deal?

Phillies got worse by signing a free agent to their AAA team?

Yup, that makes a ton of sense…

fontenot will find his niche. hes a decent bat off bench so when utley returns they will be shoring up a weakness while galvis can go back to minors and get more seasoned with the bat

phils just gotta hang in there with pitching and defense until ryan howard and utley return within a month of each other almost as good as any deadline deal they could pull off. in the meantime they give a guy like galvis experiance whether they wanna keep him longterm or possibly trade him for something better elsewhere

Career ops+ of 92 with average defense. Sounds like a good bench move.

if utley really cant play, could see a deal at the deadline for a guy like kelly johnson, who is an FA at the end of the year.
