Athletics Designate Brian Fuentes For Assignment

The Athletics announced that they designated left-hander Brian Fuentes for assignment. The team reinstated right-hander Bartolo Colon from the disabled list in a related move.

Fuentes, 36, is in the second year of a two-year, $10.5MM contract he signed following the 2010 season. He'll earn $5MM this year and his contract includes a $6.5MM club option for 2013 ($500K buyout). In 25 innings for the Athletics this year he posted a 6.84 ERA with 6.5 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9. A trade involving Fuentes could still occur within the next ten days.

I know he had an awful June, but I’m sure someone would be willing to trade a fringe prospect for Fuentes, and use him as a LOOGY.

    • The A’s tried to trade him but nobody made a offer even if the A’s would eat part of his contract.

Day of doom for under/non performing relievers. Jenks, now the axe falls on Fuentes. Who is next?

Countdown until Cherington signs Fuentes. *tick tock tick tock*

LOL. They already have Miller and Hill back soon, so think Sox fans are safe. Now orioles fans maybe have to be careful.. He fits Dan Duguette’s rehab/project profile to a T and The Duke just released Willis at AAA.. He may want to sign him as a long term project, but not even The Duke think sees any immediate help from this guy.

I can think of a few Dodgers that should get released today. Adam Kennedy, Juan Uribe to start.

Thanks for helping get Bob Geren fired, Brian.

When Melvin wasn’t putting Fuentes into games with 4-5 run leads, you know this was going to happen (and it needed to)

Finally, at least Merced isn’t far from Oakland, but it will still be a long drive home..

Thank goodness it’s about time. He’s been a big gas can recently for us. Fuentes has some success in the National League in the past so he probably might be worth a flier in contending NL teams, and be used as a LOOGY/middle relief at best.

  13. Get on this, Terry Ryan.
