So, both sides still have until midnight EST tonight to work out a 2-year deal before Ortiz is free to talk numbers with any other teams, right? And if a deal is reached before midnight it would make the qualifying offer a moot point, correct? New rules are a little confusing.

He has a week to accept or decline, if he reaches a deal with Boston tonight, he technically declines the qualifying offer in favor of his 2 year deal.

I think, could be totally wrong, lol.

what happens if say Toronto Blue jays sign him? What do the Red sox get for him then?

I believe it would be Toronto’s supplemental or 2nd round pick – not sure which.

I agree. Boston is in debt to this man. Take the gamble, if it doesn’t pay off… think of all the years we had Ortiz when he was only making a few million a year. We owe him.

Its either Texas or Boston and honestly as a Sox fan i dont care. Either way we wont make the playoffs next year. If he stays, we’re bearable offensively next year and if not, we get a compensation pick. Win-win IMO.

Texas hasn’t even been able to discuss numbers or anything with him yet, Boston still appears to be the favorite until Ortiz can talk to other teams.
