Congrats to him and good luck.

Now that they’re officially not facing the Yankees in the Wild Card game I guess this was a safe announcement

He’s been so highly regarded and in contention for some time, so now’s his chance to prove he can work in an “interesting” situation with a strong owner and manager.

“The Angels won 85 games this season and have a relatively strong talent base led by one of the one or two best players in baseball in Mike Trout. That’s a rare starting point for an incoming GM. ”
While true, the Angels also have a lot of money tied up in their strong talent base. Trout, Pujols, and Hamilton (who’s no longer there) together make around $60 million. Weaver and Wilson for an additional $30 million.

Weaver, Wilson, and Aybar are FAs after next season and Hamilton the season after. It’s not as bad as it looks.

Going over the luxury tax is not an issue for them. They’ve done that once already, and it wouldn’t bite them since a LOT of money comes off their books after 2016.

Something tells me the Angels are in good hands and will have a better situation with Billy Eppler. Dipoto focused too much on making his mark and implementing a high OBP/station to station philosophy that just doesn’t work in the current era. He took the organizational philosophy out of Mike Scioscia’s hands during an era that’s tailor made for ‘Mike Scioscia baseball’. Hopefully Eppler will recognize this and work with Mike Scioscia instead of against him. From what I’ve heard, Eppler has the right combination of scouting, player development, analytics, and leadership the Angels will need from a GM moving forward.

YESS! I think Dipoto implemented a development system that encouraged an astros all or nothing mentality. I think that is why they didn’t get along Scioscia wants athletic players who can play small ball that have good defensive skill. Dipoto wasn’t a bad GM they just had two different philosophies and to be honest I am glad Scioscia won out. Eppler will be successful if he gives Scioscia what he wants. He also has quite a few exciting peices to build around with Richards, Trout, Heaney, Gott, and Calhoun
