Leave it to Dave to discount the bullpen like its no big deal. That attitude worked so well in Detroit.
jose carlos
Well he does have a point there, besides Wade Davis who is a FA, there are few relievers in this year’s market that have better potential than what we already have in the bullpen, such as: Craig Kimbrel, Carson Smith, Joe Kelley, Matt Barns, Heath Hembree, Robbie Ross Jr., Robby Scott, Brandon Workman, Noe Ramirez, Fernando Abad and I would try to evaluate the possibility of bringing back Koji Uehara for one more year maybe around 7 M. Don’t forget that either Wright, Pomeranz and Buchholz if the Sox pick up his option will also be in the bullpen. We are looking around 12 possible pitchers that can be depth for the 2017 relief department.

First of all, Davis isn’t a free agent he has a club option which they will probably pick up. Second, I feel like you don’t know what this market even looks like. Two of the top free agents this off-season are relievers: Chapman and Jansen
BoldyMinnesota
And melancon

Don’t ever underestimate anyone that comments on these blogs because you might end up being the one that does not know how this market looks like.
This is only my opinion but the Royals most likely won’t pick up Davis option next year due to budget reasons, therefore he becomes a very interesting FA reliever. Chapman and Jansen are closers and they plan to continue as such . Whereas the Red Sox already have a closer in Kimbrel until the end of 2018. As for Chapman he will most likely return to this year’s World Series Champs the Chicago Cubs or go back to the Yankees. Jansen who I like very much as a closer will also return to the Dodgers who can easily afford him.
Any one else like Melancon could be, but he will also want to be closer and I don’t think he feels comfortable returning to the Red Sox after his unfortunate experience with them. Any other FA relief pitcher in my opinion in this offseason do not compare with what Boston already has.

You’re probably not aware, but Boston had the #5 bullpen in the AL by ERA. Their bullpen hasn’t been their problem in the ALDS.

It’s been 100% starting pitching. When your #1 and #2 pitch like that, this is what will happen.

No doubt there is a short term memory issue with DD and the pen… they basically stunk all year .. showed up for the stretch run and then the last 8 games have been no show… could use some serious over haul here!

Pen should be a high priority…… I hope…. ?????
B-Strong
Pen isn’t going to be the problem next year if the boys don’t keep up this unprecedented run production. Price would probably have been a 11 or 12 game winner instead of 17 if they hadn’t propped him up at the beginning of the season. They did that for a few of Clays and Kelly’s games too. If they put up average run production their pen will be the least of their worries.
I still think they should try and go after Ziegler and use him as a setup man and alternate closer. Maybe make an offer to Koji and if he accepts try and craft something like the trio the Yanks trotted out. WHY they didn’t do that this year when they got Koji back baffles me. Ziegler is too good a pitcher to be used as a one out guy like Farrell had been using him as of late.
Nobby
Introducing the manager of the Red Sox in 2017….Torry Luvello….. bye bye John Farrell.
Berger
I couldn’t agree with you more Nobby. Farrell is not a very good manager. His game management is well below average. It doesn’t appear as the team gives that little extra when needed and that is the mangers fault IMO…
gomerhodge71
Unfortunately, for Sox fans, Farrell’s first-place finish probably gives him an automatic return in 2017, sweep or no sweep.
stymeedone
Fortunately, for Sox fans, when they fall to last next year, repeating the cycle, Farrell won’t make it through the season.

Red Sox will be very good next year.. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you comment something beside Red Sox hate.

When you have the BEST offense in baseball, 5 guys that could steal 35 bases a year 4 all star starters 3 quality relievers and still can’t win and a very good defense there is only ONE hole Ferrell , period end of story
JS11
Make that 3 guys that can steal 35 bases
