Jay Gibbons Retires

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 9, 2012 at 12:07pm CDT

The Brewers announced that outfielder Jay Gibbons has retired, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel tweets. The 35-year-old last played in the Major Leagues with the 2010-11 Dodgers.

Gibbons appeared in 58 games for Milwaukee's Double-A and Triple-A affiliates this year, posting a .253/.345/.431 batting line. He retires with 127 career MLB home runs and a .260/.315/.453 batting line in nine seasons with the Orioles and Dodgers. Gibbons hit at least 20 homers in three of four seasons from 2002-05 and earned close to $16MM in his career, according to Baseball-Reference.

I guess steroids payed off for him financially.

Maybe. He got caught juicing after he started falling apart, though. So it’s quite possible that his success initially was legit, then he went to PEDs trying to recapture that. All steroids might have done for him was get him blacklisted for a few years he might have enjoyed as a role player.

I agree with this. He was actually at his biggest while still in A/AA ball. He trimmed down a lot when he got to the majors. I think he probably also might have succumbed to the poison of David Segui.

It’s known that he received shipments of HGH and steroids immediately following his breakout 2003 season in which he set his career high in HRs and was named the team MVP.

I’m guessing teammates were supplying him when he first got into the scene.

He got caught many years after he started doing them. Sports Illustrated reported in 2007 he received shipments from October 2003 to July 2005. (Palmeiro was busted in August 2005, hmmm…)

I’m guessing he was introduced to them initially by teammates, had a breakout year in 2002 and 2003 and started buying his own to maintain his new level of play.

I find that far more plausible than the idea that he broke out clean and then turned to steroids. Do steroid guys typically hit their career high in HR before they start using?

A rare Rule 5 success story (always good to hear about), minus the steroids.

Isn’t the success tarnished by the steroid use?

It’d be a good story if he did it clean, but he didn’t.

I’d say it’s tarnished by steroid use, for sure. When I think of Jay Gibbons, I think of steroids. I don’t think of 3 decent seasons he had as a MLB player.

I think of how he goes down as possibly the 2nd ugliest MLB player in history….but still far better looking than Otis Nixon

16 million for using steroids, not a bad gig if you can get it.

Actually it has. A-Rod’s legacy as one of the most prolific homerun hitters of all time is forever tarnished. He isn’t losing any money because of it because his contracts/deals were in place well before he was caught and confessed.
