John Patterson Retires

According to MLB.com's Bill Ladson, pitcher John Patterson announced his retirement today at age 30. Patterson just has not been able to get healthy. His best season was 2005, when he made 31 starts for the Nationals with a 3.13 ERA. Patterson was one of Scott Boras' infamous "loophole" amateur free agents in '96; Boras got him $6.075MM with the D'Backs.   Continue Reading

MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan says the Rangers are close to a deal with John Patterson. The match makes sense for both parties. Patterson is from Texas and will remain in a low-pressure environment. 6:58pm: Bart Hubbach of the New York Post says the Mets are not interested in Patterson. The Astros may take a look. 2:18pm: Today the Nationals released oft-injured starter John Patterson, who hasn't had a healthy season since his excellent 2005. Patterson says he's healthy, but wasn't progressing as quickly as the Nationals had hoped. His velocity has been down this spring. Based on his comments he seems like a good guy; I'm sure he'll find work with another club.
