Francisco Rodriguez Accepts Arbitration

By Luke Adams 2 | December 7, 2011 at 11:03pm CDT

11:03pm: Rodriguez has accepted arbitration, tweets McCalvy.

9:45pm: Agent Scott Boras says his client is still mulling his decision, tweets MLB.com's Adam McCalvy. Rodriguez has 75 minutes until the deadline.

9:29pm: Francisco Rodriguez will likely accept the Brewers' arbitration offer, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network (via Twitter). Marcos Grunfield was first to report that the reliever is expected to accept (Twitter link).

Milwaukee's decision to offer arbitration to Rodriguez was somewhat surprising, considering the right-hander earned $13.5MM last year and the team could only offer him a setup role. Given the dwindling number of teams who appear to be interested in spending big bucks on a closer, the market for K-Rod may have been limited.

Quick Hits: Bailey, Reds, Rays, Rhodes, Posada

By Luke Adams 2 | December 7, 2011 at 10:46pm CDT

While we wait for the big free agents to make their decisions, here's a grab bag of links from Day Three at the Winter Meetings:

  • The Athletics feel like they're much closer to moving Andrew Bailey than Gio Gonzalez, but even that may not happen until after the Meetings, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
  • GM Walt Jocketty finds the lack of action in Dallas for the Reds so far "very frustrating," says MLB.com's Mark Sheldon. Jocketty said he was approached with one proposal today that' he's considering, but "nothing is close."
  • Candidates for the Royals' utility infielder opening include Edgar Renteria, Mark DeRosa, Orlando Cabrera, and Carlos Guillen, tweets Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star. No deals are imminent.
  • The Rays are still attempting to figure out the best way to bolster their offense, writes Bill Chastain at MLB.com.
  • The Mariners are displaying interest in Arthur Rhodes, tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.
  • Jorge Posada would still like to play if he can find the right situation, tweets Jon Heyman of MLB Network.
  • Former Angels GM Bill Stoneman will return to the team for another year as special advisor to the GM, tweets Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.

Tigers Close To Signing Octavio Dotel

By Luke Adams 2 | December 7, 2011 at 10:31pm CDT

10:31pm: All that's left for Dotel and the Tigers to work out is the length of the contract, tweets Rosenthal. A one-year deal with a vesting option seems like the most likely outcome, Rosenthal adds.

8:37pm: The Tigers are close to a deal with Dotel, tweets Danny Knobler of CBS Sports.

6:22pm: The Cardinals are the other team Dotel is considering. Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch tweets that Detroit seems to have the edge, but Dotel remains "enamored" with the Cardinals.

5:35pm: The Tigers have made an "aggressive" offer for Dotel, tweets Morosi.

4:44pm: The Tigers are considered the favorite for Dotel, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, adding that the other finalist is a National League team.

4:20pm: Free agent reliever Octavio Dotel has narrowed his decision to two teams and expects to make a decision soon, tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.

Angels Reach Agreement With LaTroy Hawkins

By Luke Adams 2 | December 7, 2011 at 10:13pm CDT

The Angels and LaTroy Hawkins have agreed to terms on a one-year contract, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times. Hawkins will earn $3MM in the deal, tweets Scott Miller of CBS Sports.

The Angels had been pursuing bullpen help aggressively for weeks, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (on Twitter), and figure to use Hawkins as a setup man in front of closer Jordan Walden. The Angels turned their attention to Hawkins after unsuccessfully trying to acquire Ramon Ramirez from the Giants, tweets Danny Knobler of CBS Sports.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports first reported that the two sides were nearing an agreement.

Prince Fielder Rumors: Wednesday

By Steve Adams | December 7, 2011 at 10:01pm CDT

The latest on slugger Prince Fielder…

  • Agent Scott Boras says he has a number of contract offers to take back to Fielder, including many from teams that surprised him, tweets Haudricourt.
  • According to two Marlins beat writers, Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post and Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald, the Marlins are definitely not in on Fielder (Twitter links).
  • A friend of Fielder's told Newsday's Ken Davidoff that the first baseman is very interested in the Cubs (Twitter link).
  • GM Doug Melvin says the Brewers "have to consider moving on" from Fielder, tweets Haudricourt.
  • Despite signing Mark Buehrle, the Marlins are still talking to Fielder, tweets Heyman. Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (on Twitter) confirms the Fish will take a run at Fielder, and hears from a source with knowledge of the Mariners' plans that Seattle will make a "strong effort" to sign the slugger.
  • The Cubs' pursuit of Fielder has probably been overblown, GM Jed Hoyer told MLB.com TV.
  • The Marlins' interest in Fielder has been exaggerated, a good source tells Tom Haudricourt.
  • The Marlins are already in pursuit of Fielder, tweets Jon Heyman of MLB Network, as signs indicate the Cardinals will re-sign Albert Pujols.
  • The Rangers are not in on Fielder, president Nolan Ryan told reporters.

Pirates Acquire Yamaico Navarro

By Luke Adams 2 | December 7, 2011 at 9:42pm CDT

The Pirates have acquired Yamaico Navarro from the Royals in exchange for Brooks Pounders and Diego Goris, reports Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com. Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star first broke news that Navarro was heading to Pittsburgh (Twitter link). The teams have confirmed the deal in respective press releases.

Earlier today, Dutton reported that the Royals were shopping Navarro in an attempt to clear a 40-man roster spot for the Rule 5 draft. The 24-year-old was acquired by the Royals from the Red Sox in the Mike Aviles trade and saw limited big league action in 2011 for both clubs.

C.J. Wilson Rumors: Wednesday

By Tim Dierkes | December 7, 2011 at 9:03pm CDT

The latest on free agent lefty C.J. Wilson…

  • Wilson has arrived at the Winter Meetings and will meet with the Marlins tonight, tweets Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald. Miami's offer appeals to Wilson because of the long-term commitment and because he'd have a chance to hit, tweets T.R. Sullivan. I can't imagine the opportunity to get at-bats being a deciding factor, but it could at least be a notch in the 'pros' column.
  • Angels sources have suggested they won't increase their offer to six years, which could give the Marlins the edge, tweets Jon Heyman.
  • The Marlins are the "best bet" for Wilson, with the Angels a close runner-up, Rosenthal hears.
  • Rangers GM Jon Daniels told reporters, including T.R. Sullivan, that he's resigned to the possibility that Wilson will sign elsewhere.
  • The Marlins' offer to Wilson is still on the table, tweets Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.
  • If the Angels sign Wilson, it would likely be for five years, rather than six, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram hears that the Rangers haven't offered Wilson five years (Twitter link).
  • Now that the Marlins have reached an agreement with Buehrle, they're likely out on Wilson, according to a number of reporters, including T.R. Sullivan. This could mean Wilson's decision will come down to the Angels vs. the Rangers. However, Jon Heyman of MLB Network hears the Marlins may still be trying for Wilson (Twitter link).
  • Wilson tells MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan he's undecided and "torn in different directions."
  • The Marlins have big offers out to Wilson and Buehrle, tweets Buster Olney, and they'll sign whoever says yes first.
  • If the Angels don't match the Marlins' six-year offer, Wilson will likely sign with Miami, tweets Jon Paul Morosi.  The Nationals are out on Wilson, notes Morosi.
  • Wilson has a six-year offer from the Marlins, reports Tom Verducci of MLB Network.  However, Danny Knobler says the Angels are currently the clear favorite and Wilson's decision is not expected before late tonight.
  • The Marlins are well down the road with negotiations for Wilson and Mark Buehrle, reports ESPN's Jayson Stark.  They're saying that if they sign one of the starters, that will end their Albert Pujols pursuit.
  • The Rangers are not optimistic about re-signing Wilson, reports MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan.  Team officials expect him to sign with the Angels or Marlins.
  • The Angels are ramping up efforts to sign Wilson with hopes of getting a deal done today, reports MLB.com's Joe Frisaro.

Royals Exploring Long-Term Extension For Gordon

By Luke Adams 2 | December 7, 2011 at 8:58pm CDT

Following a break-out campaign that earned Alex Gordon MVP votes, the Royals would like to lock up the 27-year-old for the long term. The Royals have discussed a contract extension for Gordon, and GM Dayton Moore says the club will work "very hard" to keep him in Kansas City, according to MLB.com's Dick Kaegel.

"I don't think either side feels any pressure," said Moore. "We have him under control for two more years. There's certainly a willingness to move forward together and get something done."

Gordon, who hit .303/.376/.502 in 2011, will be eligible for arbitration this year and next. MLBTR projects an approximate salary of $4.4MM for the former second overall pick.

Angels Close To Deal With LaTroy Hawkins

By Luke Adams 2 | December 7, 2011 at 8:28pm CDT

The Angels are close to signing LaTroy Hawkins, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. This matches up with comments made earlier today by GM Jerry Dipoto, indicating the Angels were moving toward shoring up their bullpen. The deal is expected to be for one year, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.

The Brewers also have interest in Hawkins, who posted a 2.42 ERA in 48 1/3 innings for Milwaukee in 2011.

Diamondbacks Willing To Deal Prospects

By Luke Adams 2 | December 7, 2011 at 8:27pm CDT

Although GM Kevin Towers was reluctant to move any prospects at this year's July trade deadline, he's coming around on the idea this winter, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. Towers said today that he'd be willing to deal from the farm system in an effort to strengthen the big league club for another playoff run.

"We see an opportunity in the next couple of years, and this is just our eyes, the way we view it," Towers said. "This is probably an opportune time to hopefully stay on top if we make the right moves and are able to make our club better, even if it means giving up prospects."

Earlier today, we heard that the Diamondbacks had discussed acquiring Gio Gonzalez or Trevor Cahill from the Athletics.
