Quick Hits: Walden, Indians, A’s, Appel, Molina

Here are some notes from around the majors…

  • The Angels renewed the contract of closer Jordan Walden, the team announced.  The Halos also agreed to terms with 21 other players on one-year deals for 2012.
  • The Indians are "looking around for a left fielder" in the wake of Grady Sizemore's injury, tweets Danny Knobler of CBS Sports.  With so many outfielders already in camp, the Tribe are likely looking for no more than another part-timer on a minor league contract.
  • Bill Madden of the New York Daily News believes Major League Baseball won't allow the Athletics to move to San Jose.  Madden doesn't think three-quarters of the teams would approve of violating the Giants' territorial rights to San Jose, quoting a baseball lawyer who says teams would be wary of voting for a measure that could cost them in the future.  As an example, the Phillies, Mets and Yankees wouldn't be likely to vote against territorial rights since such votes be used as precedent for a team to someday move to New Jersey.
  • Right-hander Mark Appel hasn't quite pitched up to expectations for Stanford this season, writes Baseball America's Conor Glassey.  In particular, Appel's K/9 rate is lower than several recent high-drafted pitchers during their sophomore years.  Appel is a contender to be the first overall pick in the June amateur draft.
  • Yadier Molina's five-year, $75MM extension with the Cardinals was driven by the catcher's defense and leadership, reports MLB.com's Matthew Leach.  "[The St. Louis pitchers] understand his value more than sabermetricians could ever start to pick it apart, and what other people inside the game even understand," said Cards manager Mike Matheny.  "There's so many intangibles. You can't put numbers to the things that this guy does in helping this team win. And I think that's [exemplified by] two world championships since he's taken over behind the plate."

Tigers Notes: Pitching, Contract Renewals

Prince Fielder is already loving things with the Tigers, which bodes well for the club's status as World Series contenders.  Here's the latest out of the Motor City…

  • The Tigers have talked to some baseball people who are "convinced" Detroit will trade for another starting pitcher by Opening Day, reports Danny Knobler of CBS Sports (Twitter link).  We heard last week that the Tigers were keeping an eye out for potential fifth starter candidates, though the club was also comfortable in using one of their current pitchers at the end of the rotation.
  • Tigers manager Jim Leyland reiterated his support of his in-house pitching possibilities, reports MLB.com's Jason Beck.  "If we go outside [the organization], it's going to have to be [for] somebody better than what we have here," Leyland said.  "We truly believe that we've got the guy," Leyland said. "Who it is, I don't know."  Jacob Turner, Duane Below, Adam Wilk and Andy Oliver are among Detroit's internal candidates.
  • From that same item, the Tigers announced they have renewed the contracts of Alex Avila, Doug Fister and Austin Jackson for the 2012 season.  All three players will be eligible for arbitration for the first time next winter, and you'd think at least Avila and Fister will be extension candidates if they repeat their 2011 performances.  Detroit now has its entire 40-man roster under contract for 2012.

East Notes: Davis, Gregg, Hellickson, McCann

Mets first baseman Ike Davis is being treated for a form of Valley Fever, though the team says Davis' infection is non-contagious and not very serious (via Mike Puma of the New York Post on Twitter).  Davis says he has yet to receive an official diagnosis and hasn't experienced any symptoms.  In recent years, Conor Jackson has also dealt with Valley Fever, missing most of the 2009 season with a more severe case of the infection.

Here are some (non-medical) news items from around both East divisions….

  • Jim Johnson seems to have enough of a lead over Kevin Gregg for the Orioles' closer job that Peter Schmuck of the Baltimore Sun reports that Gregg could be traded if Johnson's back is healthy.  Gregg struggled in his first season in Baltimore and to move him, the O's would have to eat a big portion of Gregg's $5.8MM salary for 2012.
  • The Rays have renewed Jeremy Hellickson's contract for 2012, the team announced today.  Hellickson isn't eligible for arbitration until after the 2013 season and is under team control through 2016.  The Rays also announced they had come to terms with 22 other players with less than three years of Major League experience, including such notable names as Desmond Jennings, Alex Cobb and Matt Joyce.  Tampa Bay's entire 40-man roster is now under contract for 2012.
  • David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution thinks the Braves may have cost themselves by waiting to extend Brian McCann.  Yadier Molina's five-year, $75MM extension with the Cardinals will probably raise the price for McCann to as much as $18-$20MM or even more per season.  O'Brien thinks AL teams have an advantage over the Braves if McCann hits free agency, since McCann wouldn't have to play the field in his later years if he went to the American League.  McCann is under contract through 2012 and the Braves hold a $12MM club option on the All-Star catcher for 2013.
  • The Blue Jays may be the best-positioned of any team to benefit from the expanded playoff format, writes ESPN's Jayson Stark.
  • The two East divisions boast seven of the top 16 fantasy pitchers in baseball, according to Mike Axisa's rankings for Roto Authority.  The Phillies alone have three pitchers in the top seven, including Roy Halladay in the top spot.

NL West Links: Maybin, Moorad, D’Backs, Dodgers

Here's the latest from the NL West…

  • The Padres' contract extension with Cameron Maybin is a good deal for both parties, writes Fangraphs' Mike Axisa.
  • Jeff Moorad's purchase of the Padres could be finalized on March 12 when MLB's ownership committee and executive council hold meetings, reports Tim Sullivan of the San Diego Union-Tribune.  Sullivan hears "the Padres have completed the process of responding to baseball’s questions" following a January owners' meeting when Moorad's latest attempt to complete his purchase wasn't addressed due to what Bud Selig referred to as "economic concerns."
  • The Diamondbacks renewed the contracts of Josh Collmenter, David Hernandez, Ian Kennedy and Gerardo Parra for 2012, the team announced Saturday.  Between these renewals and agreeing to terms with 15 other players, Arizona now has its entire 40-man roster under contract for the coming season.
  • The Dodgers also announced the signings of all their players with less than three years of Major League experience, with Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times specifying that A.J. Ellis will earn $490K in 2012 and Javy Guerra will earn $488K.
  • CBS and MSG are each considering investing in one of the groups bidding to buy the Dodgers as a path to obtaining the team's broadcast rights, reports Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times.  Both networks would use the Dodgers as the foundation for a regional sports network.  With CBS, MSG, Time Warner and current rights-holders FOX all interested in Dodgers programming, the club looks well-positioned for a multi-billion dollar TV contract, perhaps even topping the Angels' recent 20-year, $3 billion deal with FOX.

Quick Hits: Cespedes, Nationals, Axford, Calero

  • Yoenis Cespedes' deal with the Athletics is now official, according to the club's Twitter account.  Cespedes' deal is for four years and is reportedly worth $36MM. 
  • In a corresponding move, the A's opened a spot for Cespedes on the 40-man roster by placing Scott Sizemore on the 60-day disabled list.  Sizemore will miss the entire 2012 campaign after tearing his left ACL.
  • Outfielders Rick Ankiel and Brett Carroll, who are both on minor league deals, are making a solid case to make the Nationals' major league squad, writes Bill Ladson of MLB.com.
  • Although people in the Nationals organization like Davey Johnson wanted him to return, Livan Hernandez says that he knew early on that his time was up in Washington, tweets Ladson.
  • The Brewers renewed the contract of right-hander John Axford this afternoon and the two sides continue to talk about a multiyear deal, tweets Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
  • Right-hander Kiko Calero is considering a procedure similar to what Bartolo Colon underwent as he weighs a comeback, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (via Twitter).
  • Both the Yankees and Red Sox are operating differently in 2012 thanks to the luxury tax threshold of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, writes Alex Speier of WEEI.com.  The new provision, Speier writes, creates the possibility for more payroll parity than the game has seen in years.

Shane Victorino Seeking Five-Year Contract

SATURDAY, 3:05pm: Victorino seemingly softened his stance when addressing reporters today, writes Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer.  The 31-year-old would still like a five-year deal, but says that staying in Philadelphia is his top priority.

"I'm not saying this will be my last one. It might be.  Who knows?  What I'm saying is, why not finish it here?  I made it seem like I want a five-year deal, but I'd love to stay," the centerfielder said.

Victorino added that his agents, Sam and Seth Levinson, have yet to formally engage in contract negotiations with the club.

THURSDAY, 4:51pm: While Cole Hamels garners most of the attention as the Phillies' top free agent after the season, the team is also faced with the impending free agency of center fielder Shane Victorino. Victorino told MLB.com's Todd Zolecki that he's looking for a five-year contract, but is willing to take a reasonable hometown discount to remain in Philadelphia.

"I look at it this way," Victorino said. "If it's a significant difference, I have to weigh my options more than anything. I obviously love to play in Philly. They gave me my opportunity. … But I also understand there's a window in this game … When I say I don't want to go anywhere, yeah, I call this home. I want to finish my career here. I won't say I won't take a hometown discount, but I also will say I want to maximize my opportunity with not only what I've accomplished as an individual, but as part of a team."

Victorino said he expects the two sides to discuss an extension during Spring Training, and he would allow talks to carry into the regular season even though that's not his preference. He's represented by Sam and Seth Levinson.

A .279/.355/.491 hitter in 2011, the 31-year-old Victorino is currently in the final season of the three-year, $22MM deal he signed in January 2010. Outfielders Torii Hunter ($90MM), J.D. Drew ($70MM), and Aaron Rowand ($60MM) all signed five-year contracts as free agents in recent years, and chances are The Flyin' Hawaiian's camp will use those deals as reference points during negotiations.

Padres Agree To Extend Cameron Maybin

2:32pm: Maybin will earn $500K in 2012 with the money escalating each year, according to Corey Brock of MLB.com.  The 24-year-old will earn $3MM, $5MM, $7MM, $8MM, and $9MM in years to follow.  The final year of the deal, 2017, comes with a $1MM buyout.

11:11am: The Padres and Cameron Maybin have agreed to a five-year contract extension with an option for a sixth year, reports Scott Miller of CBSSports.com. Dan Hayes of The North County Times first reported that an extension was imminent earlier this morning. The Brian Goldberg client will get $25MM guaranteed, according to Corey Brock of MLB.com. The option is worth $7-8MM. The team has announced the deal.

Icon_5672363The five-year contract extension covers Maybin's final pre-arbitration season, all three seasons of arbitration-eligibility, and one free agent year with an option for second. Maybin did ask for a no-trade clause according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick (on Twitter), but the team has a policy against them.

Maybin, 24, enjoyed a breakout season in San Diego last summer after being acquired from the Marlins for Ryan Webb and Edward Mujica. He hit .264/.323/.393 with nine homers and 40 steals overall, but like most players he was much more productive away from Petco Park: .294/.349/.457 with seven homers. Maybin is also considered a strong defensive center fielder, ranking third at the position with a +9.5 UZR in 2011.

The contract is similar to the one signed by Chris Young with the Diamondbacks back in 2008, a five-year deal worth $25.5MM that was brokered by current Padres GM Josh Byrnes. He had less than two years of service time at the time, however. Curtis Granderson ($30.25MM) also signed a five-year deal at a similar point in his career. Both Young and Granderson had a substantial advantage over Maybin in power numbers though, so it appears as though Goldberg got a nice deal for his defense-first outfielder.

As our Extension Tracker shows, the Padres have not signed a player to an extension longer than three years since Adrian Gonzalez and Chris Young in April 2007. Jake Peavy signed a three-year, $52MM extension in December 2007 and Jason Bartlett signed a two-year, $11MM deal last January. The two sides had been talking about a long-term extension most of the offseason, though talks stalled early last month when Maybin changed agents. Ben Nicholson-Smith suggested that the five-year contract worth $21-22MM could work for both parties back in January.

Chris Carter Signs With Seibu Lions

Outfielder Chris Carter is now playing with the Seibu Lions, reports ESPN New York's Adam Rubin (on Twitter). This is the Chris Carter who was traded from the Red Sox to the Mets for Billy Wagner in 2009, not the current Athletics prospect.

Carter, 29, has hit .263/.316/.374 with four homers in 206 big league plate appearances spread across three seasons. He spent last year in Triple-A with the Rays and Braves, hitting .286/.331/.488 with 14 homers in 308 plate appearances. The left-handed swinger has experience at both corner outfield spots as well as first base.

Poll: Which NL Team Will Have Biggest Turnaround?

With the MLB playoffs expanding to ten teams, clubs have even more reason to be hopeful about their prospects in 2012.  While some fans are questioning the wisdom change, it seems likely that it will result in an even more exciting chase down the wire.

Yesterday, we asked MLBTR readers which 90-win team is most likely to disappoint in 2012.  The three top vote getters – the Brewers (27.23%), Cardinals (17.39%), and Diamondbacks (15.89%) – all came out of the National League.  Now, it's time to look at last year's non-playoff NL teams.  Which club do you see having the biggest turnaround this season?
