A left hamstring injury has limited Nippon Ham Fighters right-handed ace/left-handed slugger Shohei Otani to just eight games this year in what could be his final season in Japan. Otani’s going to stay on the shelf for a while longer, it seems, as Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times tweets that he won’t take the field again until at least July. All of the 22-year-old’s appearances this season have come at designated hitter. (In case you missed it, MLBTR contributor Chuck Wasserstrom recently put together a must-read piece on Otani.)
More from around the game:
- Pedro Martinez generated some excitement on social media Monday when he tweeted that former Red Sox teammate and fellow retiree David Ortiz is “working out” and in “baseball shape.” However, there’s “zero indication” the longtime designated hitter is considering a comeback, tweets Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe. On whether he regrets his decision to retire after last season, Ortiz said Monday (via Abraham), “No, not at all man, I’m happy.”
- Marlins first baseman Justin Bour has a bone bruise in his left ankle that could require a stint on the disabled list, manager Don Mattingly announced Monday (Twitter link via Tim Healey of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel). Bour, who’s now using a walking boot, hasn’t been in the Marlins’ lineup since Saturday. With seven wins in its past 10 games, Miami has been hot lately, but the club is just 24-32 and a lofty 8.5 games out of a playoff spot. Losing Bour would further damage the Marlins’ slim postseason hopes, as the 29-year-old has slashed a remarkable .295/.369/.589 with 16 home runs in 214 plate appearances.
- In response to a report that the Yankees are in the market for a third base upgrade, Mike Axisa of River Ave Blues lists Todd Frazier, David Freese, Jed Lowrie, Mike Moustakas, Martin Prado, Trevor Plouffe and Yangervis Solarte as potential acquisition candidates for the Bombers. Of course, two of those players – Prado and Solarte – have been Yankees in the past. Interestingly, the team traded Solarte to San Diego in a deal for its current starting third baseman, Chase Headley, back in 2014. Headley has fallen off since his halcyon days with the Padres, though, and has been a rare weak link for the first-place Yankees this season.
- Athletics shortstop Marcus Semien, who underwent surgery on a fractured right wrist April 18, might not return until July, reports Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. The 27-homer man from 2016 just began hitting off a tee Monday and will need to embark on a fairly lengthy rehab assignment (one or two weeks) when he’s ready to take the field again, relays Slusser.

Moose would cost too much and the others no thanks.
RunDMC
I wonder if OAK would make Healy available.
jdgoat
Any deal he is in would surely have to be an overpay
A'sfaninUK
Why? He’s a DH-only slugger, pretty much a clone of Mark Trumbo, Trumbo was pretty much always available for peanuts until the Orioles got him.
SuperSinker
Don’t really see the incentive for Oakland to do that.
A'sfaninUK
Khris Davis & Ryon Healy are both full-time DH’s and there’s only one DH spot open, one has to go.
I guess they could trade Alonso to open up 1B for Healy, but Alonso is a decent defender at 1B, Healy is just ok there but might be a decent low-OBP masher. He’s actually the perfect sell-high guy – he’s what Beane tried to sell Donaldson as being (and was wildly wrong about).
pd14athletics
Alonso is a FA after this season and I really don’t see us signing him. Healy can be 1B for multiple seasons going forward and I think he’d be just fine at 1B. I’d love for Davis to be DH, I guess he messed up his shoulder in college and his arm hasn’t been same since. But I really don’t agree with the Trumbo comparison. Healy has had less than a full season of career stats but his line is a lot better than Trumbo’s. Trumbo really just had one year, last year. Trumbo has also always been in a friendlier hitting environment than Healy aside from his little time in Seattle. I don’t think anyone is counting on Trumbo to repeat. Healy could still improve as well.

Haven’t really seen a ton of Yankees games this year…how’s Headley’s defense been holding up?
davidcoonce74
His defense rebounded last season but he’s been inconsistent this year. At the plate his only real skill is just drawing walks anymore. and he’s not even doing that as much. It’s a bummer, he used to be one of my favorite players but he looks like he’s about to be starting the journeyman part of his career.
davidcoonce74
I always wonder how different his career might have looked if San Diego didn’t waste a couple years trying to convert him, at the major league level, to left field.
stratcrowder
Yep. I think the Yankees should just ride out his contract though. He’s not killing the team right now and giving away talent to replace a vet that clearly still has something in the tank would go against ‘the plan’. If anything, I imagine pitching remains their #1 priority.

Unfortunate setback for Bour, though it looks to me like the Marlins have been rewarded for giving him more regular playing time. Seems like there has to be many others who’ve been pigeonholed as platoon players early and their careers and never hit against enough same-handed pitchers to fully develop.
formerlyz
He always had a pretty good approach against lefties. Just didn’t get results. Could be the SSS. He has been on fire since the end of April, so it would really hurt to lose him right now, with the way the middle of the order has been producing lately. Marlins have enough injuries as it is.

I would think Josh Harrison would be a nice fit for the Yankees. Always thought ‘Cutch would too, but where do you put him in the Yankees outfield?
GarryHarris
Josh Harrison is a better fit than all the others listed above for both the Yankees and the Red Sox. I think the Yankees will stick with the plan and seek more youthful low cost options and DD is too smart to get a 3B from the heap. I predict he will discover an underused player from another organization.
I don’t understand all the noise about the Yankees needing to upgrade at 3B when its 1B that is historically bad this season. Bird .100, Refsnyder .128, Carter .180.
thegreatcerealfamine
Ugh Bird has been injured since the last game of SP! When has DD ever gone that way?
southbeachbully
Bird has been hurt but is expected back in a month. No need to acquire a full-time 1b who is going to block Bird upon return. He needs at bats.
rocky7
Right now “Cutch” couldn’t make our outfield.
No way the yankees are going to ship what would probably be a major prospect load to Pittsburg for anything other than possibly pitching.
cbwalradth
Eeeeugheenio Suarez from the reds would be as good or better than any of those options and the reds are a rebuilder with only one hitting prospect who happens to be a third baseman…
gocincy
Huh? Suarez is young and cheap, so he can be part of the rebuild. His natural position is SS, so he’s capable of playing elsewhere, including the OF. I cannot see why the Reds would trade him now. They can see what becomes of the other youngsters and have Suarez as a backup plan if any falter. And you know some will falter.
thegreatcerealfamine
Beg to differ.. C-Tyler Stephenson,OF-Taylor Trammel, 2B-Shed Long, and SS Alfredo Rodriguez!
stratcrowder
Suarez isn’t going anywhere until Senzel is ready.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Given that they’d be unlikely to get much for him, the Pirates are better off keeping David Freese and letting him be the veteran mentor/leader in the clubhouse after they deal Cutch.
Cole, Cutch, Watson and maybe Harrison should be on the block, but the Pirates need to keep Freese and Nova.
Macho King OG
The Yanks have to be looking for a trade partner to dump Headley with cash. Next year Torres will be up and will play 3B. They want to get rid of Headley for next year. After this year Frazier is a F/A, Lowrie, Moustakas, and Plouffe as well.. Solarte and Freese are signed through 2018. Prado is signed through 2019. They don’t make sense. The hope would be that the teams that need a third baseman next year would be interested in Headley for 2018, and if the Yanks pick up a big chunk of salary and maybe throw in a decent low level prospect they can pull off a trade. But it would make no logical sense to pick up another third baseman, and their salary, while giving up prospects, and keeping Headley on the bench and paying him.
cdwilli1
Out of all the potential 3B replacements listed, most of the players are older and/or barely out performing Headley. He usually comes out being a league average player, and I think the Yankees are better off either holding still until a better option becomes available or promoting from their farm system. Though if someone with youth and/or upside becomes available I wouldn’t be shocked to see Tyler Austin and Refsnyder moved
rocky7
I agree with you but with the first base issues and Bird’s status, no way they trade Austin to fix one problem and limit their options at first base.
Carter is horrible.
rycm131
Jed Lowrie? Who is he an upgrade over?
bobcavic
Pablo Sandoval.
rycm131
I would take Sandoval 100 times out of 100 over Jed Lowrie
jdgoat
Well that’s not a good choice
Connorsoxfan
Good thing you aren’t in charge
southbeachbully
Most of those options are rather unimpressive. Jed Lowrie and Mike Moustakas would be interesting because they are some what productive and carry little to no commitment past 2017.
However, if the cost in terms of prospect(s) is anywhere near being moderately high then I would be content with Headley because his glove, while far from above average, is as good if not better than some of those listed.

Are we still talking about Ortiz coming out of retirement?
Please, let the man enjoy life after being a player and let us fans, move on! please…
