Orioles Trade Stefan Crichton To Diamondbacks

By Steve Adams | April 2, 2018 at 1:45pm CDT

The Orioles announced that they’ve traded right-hander Stefan Crichton to the Diamondbacks in exchange for a player to be named later or cash. Crichton was one of four right-handers designated for assignment by the Orioles on Opening Day as they created roster space for veterans Colby Rasmus, Danny Valencia, Craig Gentry and Pedro Alvarez.

Crichton, 26, debuted with the Orioles last year, though he tossed just 12 1/3 innings in the Majors. In that brief sample, he yielded 11 runs on a whopping 26 hits and four walks with eight strikeouts and a 46 percent ground-ball rate. The former 23rd-rounder did average better than 94 mph on his heater in the bigs, though, and he logged a strong 3.02 ERA with 9.4 K/9, 2.1 BB/9 and 0.38 HR/9 in 47 2/3 Triple-A innings. He has a pair of minor league options remaining, so the D-backs can shuttle him back and forth between Reno and the Majors this year and next, if they wish, without needing to worry about exposing him to waivers.

Are you kidding me? Why? Guy had the potential to be a solid middle reliever and they trade him for a PTBNL? SMH

He gave up 26 innings in 12 major league innings. Guys like Crichton are a dime a dozen. We do pretty well with our relievers.

Perhaps, but he is controllable until 2024. If they exchanged him for cash in order to make room for Michael Saunders, who is a free agent following this year, then this move is pointless. This is especially the case when you consider that they have Joey Rickard and Jaycob Brugman as the OF reserves.

Saunders isn’t on the 40 man yet. Crichton had to be removed to add Valencia, Alvarez, Gentry, and rasmus. Liranzo, Crichton, Kelly, and Asher were roster casualties. Probably should’ve been ynoa over Crichton or liranzo but that’s just splitting hairs.

Ah, I see now. Thanks for clearing that up for me, I’m just a big fan of controllable depth pieces.

The DBacks have THREE PTBNL on the books right now. One to the Rays, one to Boston and now one to the Orioles. Is there a deadline as to when this stuff needs to take place?
