Tigers Designate David McKay For Assignment

By Connor Byrne | September 3, 2020 at 4:19pm CDT

The Tigers announced that they’ve designated right-hander David McKay for assignment. His roster spot will go to infielder Zack Short, whom the Tigers acquired from the Cubs for outfielder Cameron Maybin on Monday.

The 25-year-old McKay is in his second season with the Detroit organization, which claimed him off waivers from the Mariners in August 2019. He tossed a third of an inning with the Tigers this year and 19 1/3 last season, adding to the seven frames he threw as a Mariner. McKay hasn’t produced with either team, though, evidenced by his 6.08 ERA and 6.1 BB/9.

While McKay has done well racking up strikeouts in the majors (11.5 per nine) and at Triple-A (14.9 K/9), he has also had difficulty preventing runs and limiting walks at the minors’ highest level. He does have two minor league options left, though, so teams looking for an affordable and young bullpen option could take a chance on him in the coming days.

Lots of guys throw 95-96. The ones with other pitches or who can nibble the corners can stay. The rest of them bounce around as teams always hope this one will finally figure it out.

Seems unnecessary, as Jones could have easily been transferred to the 45 man IL to create room for Short.

I agree, it is strange. Jones to 45 day would have been easiest. Waiving McKay isn’t necessarily a big deal—it is the fact that it is being reported that it is to accommodate Short. Maybin-Short should have been an even roster exchange. I wonder if they had to put Daz Cameron back on the roster. Or, maybe they are getting ready to add Zimmerman or Aragrazl back from the IL. Friday’s second game starter has not been announced yet.

Aren’t both Agrazal and Nova expected to be back from the IL soon or even now? Anyway, I just hope the Tigers know what they are doing.

The Tigers will be needing an extra starter on Thursday against the Cardinals. Will they activate one of those two (or God forbid Zimmermann) or just use Alexander in another spot start. He didn’t pitch too badly in the nightcap of the doubleheader vs. Minnesota today.

Unfortunately, the newspapers state that Gardy wants Zimmerman back. Why, is Gardy throwing up the white flag and trying to get a better draft spot?

Mize Turnbull Skubal Faedo Manning Norris even Boyd et al could all be in the mix next year—why more Zimmerman? Four horrendous seasons, or has it need five?
