Jack Flaherty Shut Down From Throwing For 2-3 Weeks

By Anthony Franco | July 1, 2022 at 10:12pm CDT

The Cardinals placed Jack Flaherty on the 15-day injured list this week, as the right-hander is again battling shoulder issues. The club hasn’t provided any sort of estimated timeline on Flaherty’s return, but manager Oli Marmol said this afternoon that the star hurler wouldn’t throw for the next two-to-three weeks (via John Denton of MLB.com). President of baseball operations John Mozeliak indicated there was no structural damage but Flaherty continues to feel discomfort tied to a strain in the area.

Arguably the Cardinals best pitcher when at his best, Flaherty has been plagued by health concerns over the past couple seasons. He missed a good portion of the 2021 campaign after suffering an oblique strain. Upon returning, Flaherty injured his shoulder and lost a month late in the season — a development that required he return as a reliever at the end of the year.

While club and player were surely both hopeful he’d put those issues behind him, Flaherty began this season on the injured list after being diagnosed with shoulder bursitis in Spring Training. That delayed his 2022 debut until mid-June. Reinstated two weeks ago, the 26-year-old made three starts before additional discomfort arose.

Mozeliak said earlier this week the club believed Flaherty would return at some point this season, a sentiment echoed by the pitcher himself. A shutdown of multiple weeks reinforces that he’s looking at another extended absence, however, as he won’t pick up a ball until around the All-Star Break in a best-case scenario. Even if he doesn’t incur any setbacks, the club is sure to exercise caution building up his throwing program from there given his recent injury history.

What an absolute joke. Flaherty cannot stay healthy enough to be considered the Cards’ best pitcher. He was seen as an Ace, but his career so far has been plagued by injuries.
He doesn’t want to be on the Cardinals either. I don’t want anyone to ever get hurt or be injured, but can we move on already?!

It’s not his fault he can’t stay healthy dude, simmer down.

No, it’s definitely not his fault. That would be on the team doctors. Put putchers have a history of being hurt. But, the summer down part is what gets me. He has no value anymore at this point. There will be no return for him if we attempt to trade. It’s garbage

Easy on the cheese wiz, if he’s ever healthy again he might be good. Health has a funny way of derailing careers, but move on? Where to the next draft choice? Mozeliak traded away out best up and coming pitchers for 2 years of Ozuna I don’t see the marlins trading him and his 56 million dollar contract back anytime soon and Arizona seems happy with Gallen marlins are happy with Chisholm and look at the Cardinals. Similarly the Shelby Miller deal Cardinals get one year of Heyward and the Braves turned Miller into Swanson

Jaime Garcia, Micheal Wacha, Carlos Martinez, Alex Reyes, Rick Ankiel, Marco Gonzalez, and now Jack Flaherty. Pedro Martinez and Johan Santana also had issues, oh and Mark Mulder

“Arguably the Cardinals best pitcher when at his best”
This hasn’t been true since the 2nd half of 2019. Since then he’s only pitched 126 innings for a grand total of 0.1 WAR. He’s at best the #3 starter behind Mikolas & Wainwright.

This will afford him plenty of time to compile woke manifestos which is clearly his main passion in life.

Mega, pitchers are being asked to throw with maximum effort on every single pitch. At some point, many bodies can’t take it any more.

Damn everyone hate on Jack Flaherty so much. Didn’t realize he had such bad PR? Since his embodiment of Tyler Skaggs he hasn’t quite been the same. It would have pissed off most of the fanbase at the time but the Cardinals would have been wise to sell on him after 2019. 2020 didn’t do many pitchers favors in the health department either

Just people afraid of hearing an athlete talk about non-sports things, which I understand, but they also have the right do so.

People want the right to speak their mind, they just don’t want others to have the same right (at least those that don’t agree with them).

I see it as the other way around, earmbrister. I don’t mind (in fact, I enjoy) hearing differing opinions from all people but I draw the line at athletes, celebrities, etc. telling me how to think and feel. Not saying Jack does that, I certainly don’t know him, just interjecting my 2 cents. Hope Jack can get healthy soon because he’s a fun pitcher to watch when healthy.

A person doesn’t give up his right to free speech when they become an athlete or a celebrity. Why would they have less rights than you or I or anyone else that chooses to speak out on social issues?

        • paulk-2

All correct but we do it on our own time. Not at work like athletes do. Jack’s problem was thinking he can sit out a game and make a statement. Only thing was he wasn’t even scheduled to pitch that day. That’s not making a statement. He made that game about him and not the team. If any of us pulled that at our work, we wouldn’t have that job anymore. That’s where he catches the flack. You want to make a political statement, tell the team you intend to miss a start to make that statement. Not get bumped back a day but forfeit some money and tell them you want that start skipped. You want to make a statement, give something up. He didn’t sacrifice a thing by doing what he did. Shame on the broadcast on even showing/mentioning him and Fowler sitting in the stands that day.

Odorrizi is healthy and will be activated to make a start within 5 days.

And his injury was not arm related.

Jack is one of those players who miraculously never gets hurt after he’s on another team. Shoulder discomfort? You mean something that can’t be qualified by imaging? His MO is to come back from “injury” show case his ability a few times and then suddenly have another i approval letter injury. He doesn’t want to be here and he’s clearly just killing time and saving his arm until he is somewhere else. He will still fetch a nice return and get him traded already.

I’d be willing to bet Flaherty won’t make over five starts this season, if he plays at all.
