2023 MLB Draft, First Round Results

By Mark Polishuk | July 9, 2023 at 10:58pm CDT

The 2023 MLB Draft begins tonight, and this post will be constantly updated with each team’s selections from the first round.  The Mets and Dodgers are the only teams without a first-rounder, as their top picks were each dropped 10 places overall as part of their punishment for exceeding the highest luxury-tax tier in 2022.  As a result, the Mets won’t have a selection until the 32nd overall pick, and the Dodgers won’t select until 36th overall.

The first-round selections….

  1. Pittsburgh Pirates: Paul Skenes, RHP, LSU
  2. Washington Nationals: Dylan Crews, OF, LSU
  3. Detroit Tigers: Max Clark, OF, Franklin Community High School (IN)
  4. Texas Rangers: Wyatt Langford, OF, University Of Florida
  5. Minnesota Twins: Walker Jenkins, OF, South Brunswick High School (NC)
  6. Oakland Athletics: Jacob Wilson, SS, Grand Canyon University
  7. Cincinnati Reds: Rhett Lowder, RHP, Wake Forest
  8. Kansas City Royals: Blake Mitchell, C, Sinton High School (TX)
  9. Colorado Rockies: Chase Dollander, RHP, University of Tennessee
  10. Miami Marlins: Noble Meyer, RHP, Jesuit High School (OR)
  11. Los Angeles Angels: Nolan Schanuel, 1B/OF, Florida Atlantic
  12. Arizona Diamondbacks: Tommy Troy, SS, Stanford
  13. Chicago Cubs: Matthew Shaw, SS, University of Maryland
  14. Boston Red Sox: Kyle Teel, C, University of Virginia
  15. Chicago White Sox: Jacob Gonzalez, SS, University Of Mississippi
  16. San Francisco Giants: Bryce Eldridge, 1B/RHP, Madison High School (VA)
  17. Baltimore Orioles: Enrique Bradfield Jr., OF, Vanderbilt
  18. Milwaukee Brewers: Brock Wilken, 3B, Wake Forest
  19. Tampa Bay Rays: Brayden Taylor, 3B/SS, TCU
  20. Toronto Blue Jays: Arjun Nimmala, SS, Strawberry Crest High School (FL)
  21. St. Louis Cardinals: Chase Davis, OF, University of Arizona
  22. Seattle Mariners: Colt Emerson, SS, Glenn High School (OH)
  23. Cleveland Guardians: Ralphy Velazquez, C, Huntington Beach High School (CA)
  24. Atlanta Braves: Hurston Waldrep, RHP, University of Florida
  25. San Diego Padres: Dillon Head, OF, Homewood-Flossmoor High School (IL)
  26. New York Yankees: George Lombard Jr., 3B/SS, Gulliver Prep High School (FL)
  27. Philadelphia Phillies: Aidan Miller, 3B/SS, Mitchell High School (FL)
  28. Houston Astros: Brice Matthews, SS, University of Nebraska

This year’s draft will again be 20 rounds long, and split over three days.  Rounds 11-20 will take place on Tuesday, rounds 3-10 on Monday, and the draft’s first 70 picks will be made tonight.  Those 70 picks cover the first two official rounds, the two Competitive Balance Rounds, the two sets of compensatory rounds (giving picks to teams who lost qualifying offer-rejecting free agents), and the first-ever Prospect Promotion Incentive Pick.  The Mariners received the PPI selection at 29th overall, since Julio Rodriguez filled the criteria of winning the Rookie Of The Year Award, being part of his team’s active roster from Opening Day onwards, and he ranked as a preseason top-100 prospect by at least two of Baseball America, ESPN, and MLB Pipeline.

The PPI is one of several new wrinkles to the 2023 draft, as this is the first draft held under the new guidelines established by the 2022-2026 Collective Bargaining Agreement.  The process for determining the 14 teams in the Competitive Balance Rounds was also tweaked, though the teams (all in the bottom 10 in market size or revenue size) will still have their picks split up over two mini-rounds sandwiched around the second round.  The most obvious change came at the very top of the board, as this was the first year of the lottery process to determine the draft’s top six picks.  This is how the Pirates ended up with the first overall selection, even though the Nationals and A’s each had worse records in 2022.

This year’s draft class is considered to be one of the deepest and most talent-laden in years, so several potential franchise-changing players could be starting their pro careers tonight.  More details and scouting reports on all these young players are available in pre-draft rankings from Baseball America, Fangraphs, MLB Pipeline, The Athletic’s Keith Law, and ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel.  As well, Pipeline has the breakdown of the slot values assigned to each pick in the first 10 rounds, as well as the bonus pool money available to all 30 teams.

My hopes: Crews, Langford, Clark, Jenkins, and Skenes in that order

My fears: They mimic last year by drafting a guy outside the top 30

Skenes and Crews going 1 and 2 is pretty much the only sure bet in this draft…

Clark is likely going #3 as well, soo, if you’re a Rangers fan, they are going to end up likely choosing between the two of Langford and Jenkins….That is, if they select someone you want

That’s a headscratcher from a Tiger point of view. I’m wondering if they have an over-slot deal with someone that wants first-round money to sign out of high school. Then again, this is the team that took Jackson Jobe over Marcelo Mayer.

Texas has drafted and developed Tex, Brown, Rogers, Kinsler, Gallo, and Jung, of all the guys I can recall. Trust me, Texas has been much worse historically. They even messed up Lieter.

From what I remember hearing was Marcelo Mayer wasn’t going to sign if he was drafted by Detroit. His family wanted him to go to Boston at 4 if he didn’t go in the top two. If Boston passed on him then he was going to go to college. It sucks as a Tigers fan myself that Jobe has been hurt but since he came back has been pretty decent. Don’t write him off just yet. From what I have read Max Clark has huge upside and might be the best position player in the draft when he’s ready for the majors.

Well, he’s from Indiana, so he must be a shooting guard, great passer and a few steals. Maybe they can trade him for someone who comes from someplace where they play a lot of baseball.

I’ve heard the same thing, but Langford looks like he could be ready in 2+ years, not 4-5. Jobe might turn out to be good, but Mayer looks great. I’m just salty.

No matter what happens, Tigers’ fans, it’s not as bad as picking a 30 something ranked guy at 3rd (Texas last year). The Porter thing was luck, and I assume a 2nd round pick would have more names available to go overslot on.

Clark probably will be under slot. Worthy pick though. No doubt cf. Top scale run arm and hit is up there as well. I like his swing. Only ? is power. 15 20 hrs or 25 35? Ok to like other outfielders better but Clark is worthy pick and superior outfielder. Though I think Jenkins can stick in center.

Langford is coming out of college. He should be ready in two years. If a college guy takes 4-5 years he better drafted in the last round.

I saw Jobe’s older brother, Josh, who is an all star, hit 2 HRs yesterday for the Rangers. Jace is supposedly better. I have no problem waiting for Jobe to pan out.
I also think getting a top HS bat beats taking a 3 yr. college kid with a few miles on him. Max Clark is going to be better than Crews and Langford. Just wait.

Clark is better than Riley Greene and below Bryce Harper coming out of HS. He should progress through the minors similarly to them. 2-3 years. I see Max in Detroit by the ’26 season.

BTW, very, very, very few draftees make it to the majors in their 1st (drafted) season or even their 2nd. You won’t see many of today’s draftees in the majors next year.

Tony the Tiger works better than Max the Tiger though! I was a bit shocked to hear his name called but if they saved some cash to grab someone overslot at 37 I’d be good with it. Some solid names still hanging around including Kevin McGonigle and Yohandry Morales.

So I have a question. I know you can’t trade draft choices, Only competitive ones. Can you draft somebody and then trade them? Or is there a waiting period? Or do you have to sign them and then trade them? Just askin.

They cannot be traded until they are signed. It used to be there was a year long wait after signing before they could be traded, but I think the wait is only until after the end of this season now.

No it’s not. Teams make up a draft board but the guys they want are not always there when it comes time to pick so they are given a few minutes to decide on alternatives.

Before the draft was on TV the team’s got the same amount of time between picks.

NHL players get paid 50% of total revenue for the sport and they open their books completely to the union.

That you think somehow they are treating the players “like absolute crap” shows that you know as little about the NHL as you do about baseball.

Simple answer-what was their percentage of revenues over the past 30 years? The percentages vary depending on which site one uses, but so far as I see, MLB revenue is growing faster than player salaries.

When NHL revenue goes up player salaries go up an equal percentage and in the NHL the union has complete access to the team and leagues books. They know exactly how much is coming in. The minimum NHL players get is 50%.

During the negotiations for the most recent MLB CBA we learned that players were making just 37% of reported MLB income. MLB owners refuse to open the books.

MLB should allow draft picks to be traded and I think it would benefit small market teams most of all. It’s the smaller markets that would stack draft picks as they’re more likely to be building through the farm. A bigger market (or owners who invest in their teams) can afford to use big $ free agents to supplement homegrown talent. Win now teams should be incentivized to trade away draft picks to rebuilding teams.

There are enough players in the minor leagues to trade that draft pick trading is completely unnecessary. In the NFL and NBA, it is necessary because they don’t have multiple levels of prospects to deal from.

Trading draft picks will only hurt small market teams because instead of getting minor league players closer to the bigs in trades, they would get draft picks which would take 2-3 years longer to get to the majors, if they ever did.

Of course a Rockies fan would hate the idea of trading draft picks. The Rockies have a really bad track record of developing pitching talent and don’t trade away players from the major league roster. Getting more draft picks would probably just lead to even more ruined pitching prospects.

If the draft was in Offseason even with no Draft Pick Trading their would still be Trades happening because Insiders would be live to report them because no Insider live on MLB Network coverage. Even at Trade Deadline.

Yes I agree with that but as an A’s fan you should recognize how many times a team can rebuild and get itself into the playoffs based on trading away major league talent. Allowing a team like OAK to acquire more picks only helps their chances, however small that might be.

I understand why A’s fans are pessimistic but the A’s problem isn’t big market teams, it’s Fisher as you point out. Trading draft picks would benefit smart teams and players. The A’s have been smart about not trading away prospects and probably would do the same with draft picks

It’s funny because fans will say that trading picks would hurt small market teams but I hear no one mention how shortening the draft helps teams like the Dodgers. LA is able to find undrafted talent like Justin Bruihl, Austin Gauthier, and Jake Pilarski and sign those players for more than the A’s will commit but no small market teams ever say we need to increase the draft rounds up to previous levels. A team like the A’s and Pirates need as much young talent as possible but MLB is shrinking the amount of minor league teams, organizational roster sizes, and draft classes. All of those rules hurt teams that build through the farm.

Obviously you are a fan of big market teams. What you suggest would make it easier for teams like the Dodgers to trade established players for picks and then replace those players in the short term with FAs because they can afford to. It would also keep small market teams in a constant state of rebuild, because even first round picks have only a 50% chance of making an impact.

Tampa Bay seems to do pretty well trading away established players and getting enough talent in return. Houston used a small market mindset with free agents, even their own, and they built themselves into a yearly championship contender. There’s plenty of success stories of smaller markets building through the draft.

Tampa Bay does it out of necessity because when their good players are done with arbitration they can’t afford to pay them for the most part. They’ve been very successful at it too.

Tampa can afford to go after bigger free agents. They’ve embraced building through the draft because it’s the only way to build sustainable winners, for big or small markets.

          Poor you
For every TB, there is a PIT, KC, MIL, CIN, BALT and OAK. In your way of thinking, why not just relegate those franchises to being a part of a glorified top minor league
All of those franchises are emulating the TB model with different degrees of success both historically and in a present sense. The only hope to compete for those franchises is to draft or trade for top talent, develop, become major leaguers and compete while under contractual control, trade them or allow them to leave when their asking price is too high and repeat
That’s the TB model in a nutshell
Your idea cuts their legs off. Sheesh, what misguided drivel

Doc, what you are essentially prescribing is allowing a team like the Pirates to either physically draft a guy like Skenes and trade him for draft picks the Yankees have which are down the line, or just allowing teams to swap picks before the draft even begins ala the NFL
Here’s the question: despite what the MLB Network says, has the MLB draft ever been so deep that it yields big impact players down the chain or in subsequent rounds?
All you are doing is bringing the free agency idea—where big markets get the big timers—into the draft equation

Poetees here have pointed out that baseball draft picks bust at a high rate and they say it benefits the big markets to trade them, now you tell me the big money teams will just get the best lotto tickets. I don’t think big vs small is the best way of describing the gap that exists between some mlb teams. Cincy and Baltimore have embraced building through the draft but so have some big market teams. Spending big on free agents hasn’t been the best way to build winners lately.

It isn’t so much that anything is guaranteed as much as it is just one more additional asset. If the RS, for example, decide to trade Duvall, the return might be a decent international lottery ticket. If they could trade draft choices, he might cost a low 2nd rounder, with a hit rate of maybe 5-10%.

This year the jays at 20 get pipelines 11th best prospect but a young HS player. Maybe he wants a ton of cash so he slipped, maybe its cuz he is young. MLB should allow draft picks to be traded
      ========================
I agree 100%. It’s better for the game, and would make the draft something more people would want to watch. There are probably plenty of possible trades that don’t get made because of match-ups. But if one of the teams could throw in a 2025 #1, it might make all the difference.

      Same with international money.

The beauty of it would be watching desperate GMs, on the cusp of being fired, desperately trading away picks to the rebuilding teams.

In the other 4 major sports, players go directly to the sport in question. Nearly 100% of drafted players.

In MLB I only remember 4 going straight to the majors since 2000 and all of them were relievers. The average time in pro ball the US is over 4 years. Purposely not counting the DSL.

That is why they don’t allow trading draft picks.

Does baseball have an artificial gatekeeping aspect in place that prevents draft picks from directly going to the majors?? Can baseball players be coached up enough to go straight to the majors if the sport allowed it ?? Do we keep talented individuals in the minors too long on purpose?? I always hated how the university/college system is used basically as a “minor leagues” for the NFL to freely exploit but perhaps it’s a better system than the actual minor league system we have set up for baseball.

Harris pulls a smartest guy in the room stunt and chooses a high schooler, when the best power hitting College player has fallen to them! How is this different than taking Jobe over Mayer?!! If he’s already looking 4 years down the road, Greene and Torkelson and most of the young pitching will be Free agents or on their option year. Hope Harris still has a job when Clark finally arrives. Last time Tigers were in the WS, they lost to a St Louis team that was two games over .500, winning a weak division. In 5 years, the central may be strong and a better Detroit team may come in 3rd. Harris was hired to be POBO for this team, not some future team he may not even be around for.

I posted it because I’m a Padres fan and last year after we drafted Dylan Lesko a bunch of very stupid people on Reddit and Twitter floated the idea of us using him as a PTBNL in trade for Juan Soto or Shohei Ohtani. And then some of them, when they were told that that isn’t allowed, they doubled down. Said stuff like “You can always get around that. Come the offseason just make a separate, unrelated trade of Dylan Lesko to the Nats for a non-prospect to complete the Soto trade.”

There is little offense in FA this offseason. The team needs offense now. All Harris has provided is McKinstry and Ibanez. Langford could have been up by’25. Guess Illitch is letting him build his own team from scratch. May as well trade all the Avila guys now, and build a team from waiver wire claims.

Yes, but trades change the team (when it is thin), they don’t add to them. They lack the extra players to add to the big league team. Rentals only return pennies on the dollar. No one is going to take 3 back up players from the Tigers for one decent player, like the Phillies were able to do last winter.

We need change. Good to see them turfing marginal players to let some of the young guys play. Vierling alone was worth Soto. In the next couple years we should graduate starters in Keith, Dingler, Malloy and Jung to add to the current core of Carpenter, Tork and Greene. Fill in around that core with trades and free agent signings. The pitching will be fine and we should get something interesting from our pitching surplus at the trade deadline because there are a ton of teams looking for pitching. Harris got Malloy for Joe Jimenez so I’m hoping he can work more of that magic. Pick #37 is coming up…Yohandry Morales and Kevin McGonigle are still around.

Too high for a 1B only guy. Bats don’t always develop as expected, so that is why guys that play premium defensive positions are usually drafted higher. That way even if the bat doesn’t develop, you always have the chance of defense developing and you can still have a useful big leaguer. The guy could become a great major league talent, just like everyone else picked tonight, but it is a bigger gamble at pick #11 than most teams would make.

3 things about the Angels pick. By always trying to get a guy who’s “ready for the pros” they may pass up more talented players. When was the last time they drafted a high school player. All because Minasian has to keep his job but screws up the future of the franchise. They seem to favor players willing to take a discount for the slot who are just happy getting picked at that spot. And how many right handed throwing left handed hitters does that make now. They always seem overloaded with those.

Hey Agnes. Farhan putting a couple of athletes into Papago and seeing what it spits out. Fingers crossed.

I’m taking 49-41 on opening day. Lets get some banged up troops recovered and bring it home !

Surprised that my O’s went outfield instead of pitching. But this front office has built up plenty of trust with me so far so I won’t second guess too much. Gotta love 80 grade speed though.

You wonder if Teel will want more than slot… most boards put him about 1-3m more in bonus money than his slot in Boston. If so, the bloomheaded move costing bonus slot money by virtue of the picks being downgraded for being over the cap last year come with an even bigger level of hurt.

IMVHO, Teel was a slam dunk at that slot. A lot of sites thought Teel was top-10 material.

Joe, sounds like you agree with me – That’s what I said somewhere else, and why I’m pointing out most draft boards had him going higher, with larger bonuses

My question was/is, will he want the kind of money where pre-draft expectations expected him? If so, that’s between 1m – 3m more than Boston got for the slot.

Had bloom not completely screwed up by busting the cbt for no good reason, he wouldn’t have lost draft slot money when the couple picks were down graded as penalty, losing some money to play with.

I would assume that his bonus will fall about halfway between what he’d have gotten at say #10, and what the slot would be at #14. The difference is $820k, so splitting the difference will cost $410k.

And I believe that Mayer signed for slot money, despite going #4 instead of #1. I’m not at all concerned. There is probably a decent chance that they have already come to agreements with 1-2 later picks for under-slot bonuses.

CBS had him as high as #5, MLB at #7, and most everyone else between 5-10 so signing below the #14 slot value would be very welcome news indeed.

Manfred acts like he’s super race-friendly and then goes on to pronounce Arjun Nimmala (Uhrjune Namahla phonetically) as R. John Nimmala. Smh. Just spell his name at this point instead of making a failed effort. It’s quite annoying IMO. I would prefer that to attempting and botching it big time.

That’s your opinion. If you followed baseball you’d know the majority of the top 10. Obviously you don’t, otherwise it wouldn’t be boring. The most boring or unwatchable to me? The NHL draft, because although I’m a hockey fan, I’m not one to the level to that the names mean anything.

Do the guys on MLB Network not realize they are booing Manfred, or are they just pretending it is the teams (Yankees and Astros) that are polarizing? I get the boos, but not why they are doing it so frequently. Just get it done once and then move onto the draft. Smh

Right before Manfred announced each pick the video board showed highlights for the team on the clock. Houston’s concluded was Yordan walking off Seattle right before Manfred took the stage. If they had also shown Peña’s 18th inning HR the Seattle fans may have rioted. MLB knows how to poke the bear to get a nice grumpy growl out of drunks and loudmouths.

More fodder for the minor leagues. Once in a while, a decent player comes out of those drafts but for the most part, it’s garbage players being drafted.

Mostly, you may be right, but MLB stars have to come from somewhere…

Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, and Pujols didn’t magically come from nowhere.

All from the steroid era, so they cheated their way to the top… Sadly, before steroids, Bonds was looking like a top player as it was so it’s unfortunate that he thought it would be best to roid up when he was already a star player. I guess the fact that the media wouldn’t give him the attention he deserved go to him.

I liked McGonigle at 37…first round talent…one baseball mag gad him ranked #8 iverall at the start of the season. That one at 45 was puzzling. They said Max Anderson is going to be a 1B type in the big leagues not 2B? He hit 8 HRs in his last 17 games though.

As a RS fan, I am very pleased with our two picks. Teel not only fell a little, he was also a good need pick. That’s value + need. I didn’t do as much research on Zanetello, but FG had him ranked #31. And he is athletic enough to play OF, where I feel our depth is a little lacking.

Any guesses on the signing bonus for Nimmala? A lot of industry rankings and reports that he is a top dozen or so talent in a really good draft class. That kind of suggests above $5m plus the fact that he’s a high schooler who can command more. Jays are only working with around $6.5m for the entire draft. I’m guessing we’ll see some college seniors and relievers taken by them today.

I thought the Reds were shrewd getting two college pitchers who could move quickly up top. Not a bad idea considering they can’t seem to get any established major league talent there.
