Mariners Acquire Adam Frazier From Padres

By TC Zencka | November 27, 2021 at 10:34am CDT

The San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners have agreed to a three-player trade. The Padres will send All-Star second baseman Adam Frazier to Seattle for left-handed reliever Ray Kerr and outfielder Corey Rosier, reports ESPN’s Jeff Passan (via Twitter). Both teams have announced the deal, making it official.

Frazier certainly fits the mold of the type of offensive contributor that GM Jerry Dipoto tends to covet. Case and point, the Mariners were said to be interested in Frazier at the trade deadline before he ultimately landed in San Diego.

The soon-to-be 30-year-old is a contact-first bat and well-rounded player who can cover second base on a regular basis or move to the outfield. Though his defensive versatility is a plus, his bat plays best if he’s manning the keystone. Right now, that’s where he is most likely to get the bulk of his playing time. He will share the middle infield with J.P. Crawford, while Abraham Toro and Ty France fill out the infield as Dylan Moore moves into a super utility role.

Frazier was an All-Star last season with the Pirates before slowing down in San Diego. Still, he posted 4.0 rWAR and an overall slash line of .305/.368/.411 over 639 plate appearances between the Pirates and Padres. Frazier is projected to make around $7.2MM in arbitration in what will be his final season before free agency, so he rates as a relatively low-risk, low-cost acquisition for the Mariners.

While a solid contributor, it would be difficult to rank him as a true “difference-maker.” His lack of pop (.131 career ISO) makes him more of a line mover than a run creator, though he will lengthen the Mariners’ lineup and make life difficult on opposing pitchers by putting the ball in play and vying for a high batting average.

Truth be told, he’s a fairly similar player in form and function to his new double play partner in Crawford: sure-handed defenders, light on power and patience, who run well and excel at putting bat-to-ball. Don’t be surprised to see Frazier near the top of the Mariners’ batting order on a regular basis, regardless of where they put his glove.

In terms of his approach, Frazier walked in just 7.5 percent of his plate appearances, below the league-average 8.5 percent walk rate. At the same time, he struck out in a mere 10.8 percent of his plate appearances, a much stronger rate than the 22.3 percent league average. In short, Frazier puts pressure on defenses, while minimizing mistakes on the other end. He’s a quality contributor and the type of player that will give manager Scott Servais plenty of options on both ends.

In exchange for one season of Frazier, the Mariners are sending a hard-throwing southpaw reliever in Kerr and a young outfielder in Rosier. Neither have appeared on prospect lists, though Kerr did appear in Fangraphs’ supplemental “Arm Strength Relief Sorts” section. Wrote Fangraphs, “Kerr is a late-bloomer who came into big velo ahead of the pandemic. He can dunk a basketball and has superlative weight room exploits as well as rare lefty velo, inconsistently up to 99. His splitter flashes plus and the Mariners have worked with his slider enough to create viable sweep on the pitch but it was a 30 the last I saw it. The strike-throwing and secondary consistency are present issues, too.”

At 27 years old without a Major League appearance, Kerr could be considered a non-prospect, though his ability to hit triple-digits on the radar gun provides some intrigue as a potential power arm out of the bullpen. He was signed as a non-drafted free agent back in 2017, beginning his career as a two-way player, though he has focused on pitching in recent years. The athletic ability is clearly there, the question being whether it can be channeled to turn him from a “thrower” to a “pitcher,” as the saying goes.

Last season, Kerr tossed 39 2/3 innings across 36 appearances in Double-A and Triple-A with a combined 3.18 ERA, inspiring 36.8 percent strikeout rate, and 9.8 percent walk rate. For a Padres team that’s prioritizing pitching depth this offseason, Kerr is a solid gamble to add to the 40-man roster.

Rosier, 22, was a 12th round pick in last year’s amateur draft, signing for a $125K bonus. The Maryland native played his college ball at UNC Greensboro, and he was the #249th ranked prospect in the draft, per Baseball America. He played most of last season in Low-A Modesto, slashing an impressive .390/.461/.585 in 141 plate appearances. He projects as an extra outfielder with the ability to play centerfield. At the plate, his limited power is his biggest shortcoming.

Kerr and Rosier aren’t prospects at the level of  Tucupita Marcano, Jack Suwinski, and Michell Miliano, the prospect San Diego sent to Pittsburgh to acquire Frazier at the deadline. That said, there’s no reason to think they’d get back fair value. Kerr fits a need and Rosier helps backfill the farm system at a lower level.

The more motivating factor in this deal for San Diego is financial. Frazier’s deal wasn’t exorbitant, but for a team with limited payroll flexibility, clearing Frazier’s deal from the payroll helps. With Jake Cronenworth, Ha-Seong Kim and Jurickson Profar all under contract, the Padres are set with second base/utility types, where Frazier best profiles. With the financial savings, President of Baseball Ops A.J. Preller can look to re-invest into the pitching staff or in finding an impact bat for an outfield corner.

How did I know TC Zencka wrote this article? Oh, yeah. Frazier “can player second base” and “his bat plays best is he’s manning the keystone.” That’s how.

That’s actually pretty good as far as TC articles go.

Free shouldn’t be a way to obfuscate the fact that this site could be better. A copy editor is not a huge expense and could vastly improve the quality of the site when typos and oddly worded phrases are a consistent complaint.

Either way, great move for the Mariners. Questionable for the Padres.

Offspring of two retired copy editors here: reporters/writers DO proofread their stories. However sometimes they don’t catch everything, even the big stuff. (And with nearly every news site wanting a quick turn around these days, there are bound to be mistakes). This is where copy editors come in: they are a good defense against blunders and word salad and can point out to a reporter or writer “hey, that doesn’t make sense?” or “what are you trying to say here??” and work with the writer to make it better. So yeah… a copy editor WOULD be a good (and relatively cheap) expense.

It’s naturally difficult to proof one’s own writing. The human brain is wired to make corrections as we read — filling in missing letters, supplying missing words, etc. — without our necessarily being conscious that it’s doing it. If you’ve ever encountered one of those experimental paragraphs full of deliberately omitted or transposed letters in the words, which, nevertheless, are easily intelligible, you’ve experienced those brain functions at work. That’s why proofreaders team-read important documents; so mistakes that one proofer overlooks might be caught by a teammate.

OMG, people! I didn’t mean for this to degenerate into some kind of argument about a free site and writing and who should say what. I meant it light hearted. I couldn’t care less about any typos anyone makes. It’s just a running joke around here for TC because he makes the most of any writers on the site. It sometimes seems he sends his articles out after typing them without even reading them once.

For anyone who doesn’t know, it hit a low point last season right before the playoffs. Marlins pitcher Jose Urena fractured his arm and was about to miss the playoffs. The Braves had won the division and were headed to the playoffs as well.

TC Zencka posted an article on this site about Urena’s injury and titled it “Acuna to miss playoffs due to arm fracture.” He left it that way all day even though all the comments were about how he couldn’t be right. He eventually changed it about 12 hours later but all day long MLBTR was reporting that the Braves star player would miss the playoffs when it wasn’t true. It was all because of TC Zencka’s lack of effort to proofread.

I couldn’t care less about his typos and I will still read his stuff even though Zencka is obviously the least talented and most careless writer in the MLBTR staff. That doesn’t change the fact that people can give him playfull jabs for his careless mistakes. He’s earned it.

I’m sure he’s a great guy. I meant it in jest. You can still be jestful while being truthful. I never care about anyone’s typos. I do hope someone called him out for that Acuna mistake though. It was really bad and it was a major mistake in the title. It confused a lot of people for hours because he never proofread or even read the comments for so long. Thousands of people thought Acuna was not going to be in the playoffs because MLBTR is a reputable site.

Calling TC out when he makes a mistake is like calling out a player who dropped a ball in his hands during an elimination game. We still love him but we won’t let him live it down. I would love to hang out with him though and I bet he’s a great person.

I’m a little confused by this. I thought this was the Padres open window with expensive Manny Machado and soon to be expensive Fernando Tatis Jr on the team. Now they subtract a guy who seems to be a useful piece (Adam Frazier) whom they just added at last years trade deadline for prospects. Now Frazier is dealt away yet again for prospects. Either they really like Ray Kerr or albatross contracts are already hurting the team as they usually end up doing. I do understand Frazier wasn’t exactly great in his short stint as a Padre but he’s been decent over his career and I would bet he had a productive season in 2022 (if there is a season…).

It’s also a matter of timing. Frazier’s stock was high late in last season when adding him could have helped teams in the playoffs. His lackluster finish and trading in the post season, diminishes his trade value now. Still, it’s a “win-win” trade, Mariners upgraded a bit at a low (i.e. non-prospect) cost, and SD gained some financial wiggle room, plus a couple of pieces for the farm for future possible growth and/or contingencies.

Preller has always stressed that while the Padres may be in “win now” mode, they’ll never be in “win now at any cost” mode. He’ll continue to build the farm, here and there, as they find opportunities. Do I like this trade vis-a-vis the haul the Pirates got for Frazier? Not at all. However, that’s an “apples versus oranges” comparison, i.e. not legitimate reasoning.

Preller has his work cut out for him. Not sure what he’ll do. The cost to move Hosmer is prohibitive, i.e. some near-certain high level prospects. Hosmer may be a nice guy, but his contract was a mistake from beginning to end, with his “character” being the only redeeming virtue. He’s essentially beyond worthless, because of the committed money due to him. The Padres could have hired a “morale coach” for less than 1% of what they are paying Hosmer, and his replacement value could have been filled by various scrubs over the years. Preller needs to find a way to unload him, without burning down the farm.

I think he’ll do it, too.

I wrote constantly 5-7 weeks ago that new majority owner of the Padres put a leash on Preller and is keeping him in his lane. Got blasted here by Padre fans. That’s fine.

Offseason has been all about Boras and Preller preening for years. Notice how little we now hear of Preller? Padres brought in a qualified manager and pitching coach (Tatis is being reigned in). The hitting coach is a bit of a stretch, but maybe he’ll work out. Now the excesses of the roster are being moved.

Great owner. Dodgers and Giants need to be careful. Rockies and DBack’s best hope it to be moved to another division.

Frazier himself might not play second base right away. It’s possible that he was acquired to address LF until Julio’s ready, then move/rotate him.

The beauty of an acquisition like this is that it doesn’t infringe on Seattle’s ability to improvise. Semien, Story, Bryant, etc., are all still very real possibilities, and who is acquired next could dictate where Frazier plays on the field.

From San Diego’s perspective, removing his 7.5m projected salary from their books puts them under the threshold by a few million.

The Pads can easily do better than Frazier in the OF. Few teams would field a guy who averages 5 HRs and 5 SBs a year in the OF. They need more offense from that position. The Frazier for Marcano trade was a mistake that didnt fill any needs for Pads. They made the trade when it appeared Tatis might be out with injury and while they were still in contention. So Preller made a mistake, and at least is owing up to it by acquiring $ to address P and/or OF needs.

It was a strange trade for the Padres to begin with. Cronenworth, Kim, Profar, and Abrams would be returning next season. The Padres aren’t short on middle infielders. Though I guess buy first think second has been the Padres’ philosophy for a while now.

You could argue that Frazier was the best example of a Preller impulse acquisition, and there have been many of them. There was no need for Frazier, his presence made no difference, and now he has to be offloaded for 2 unrated prospects, but the pitcher can dunk a basketball, so there’s that.

Bingo. Frazier needed traded when he was. He was having a career year and was already regressing a few weeks prior to the trade. There are better 2B candidates knocking on the door from the Pirates system so he was going to have to be traded sooner than later anyway. Based on the return that the Padres got for him, what the Pirates got seems fair and what the league values Adam Frazier. Many yinzer fans still complain about the Walker trade even though Walker spent a lot of time on the IL for several teams after the trade. They still whine about the McCutcheon trade but without it, no Reynolds. I think that they listen to the local talking heads and read the local sports writers too much. Most of those guys who purport to know all about baseball and the Pirates had no idea who were available in the draft for the last few years nor do they have any idea who the Pirates have in the minors right now,

Career year? Quite possibly, but as I recall he’s always been a solid player overall, versatile and good on D, and never hurt the team offensively. I’ve always liked Adam Frazier as a super-utility guy.

Career year at the plate. 29 and easily the best offensive production of his career even with tailing off at the end of the season. Never said he was a bad player. He is a good player who can play at the major league level. His value is shown by the two trades. A decent player that no one is willing to overpay for.

I think he still has his career year yet to come. Frazier, so far in his career, has been a bit Jeckyll and Hyde-ish. It’s completely masked by looking at his end of year totals but pretty much every year he has a tale of two seasons where he either starts hot and tails off at the end like this year or more often starts slow and gets hot to finish. The bottom line results are pretty much always a slightly above average bat with a high average, low strikeout rate and a little bit of power but if he ever puts together a complete season he could win a batting title.

Frazier ranked in the 98th percentile in strikeout and whiff percentage last season and had a 3.5 fWAR, add that with his solid defense and versatility… that has value. A lot of teams have been interested in acquiring him for the last couple of seasons.

Marcano was a 40 FV by fangraphs. He can’t hit much and has a very slight build. Maybe he’s a useful utility piece one day….Maybe. Suwinski was a 35+……. the Padres didn’t give up any strong prospects to get him.

Marcano rarely strikes out and walks a ton. He has plus speed and an average glove at multiple positions. They compared him a lot to Adam Frazier and David Fletcher when the Pirates got him. I feel there’s something in Marcano many of us aren’t seeing that both the Pirates and Padres see/saw in him. For one, they weren’t willing to give him up for Joe Musgrove. It too Frazier plus cash to get him. Personally, I think his hit tool is better than Frazier’s because of his outstnading hand-eye coordination and ability to walk more often. I think Suwinski is one of the more overlooked pieces in that trade and in the Pirates’ system. He has that three-true-outcomes kind of approach, but he also has some sneaky athleticiscm and is a plus fielder with a strong arm.

Not surprising they traded Frazier. $7.2M seemed like a steep price to pay for someone who struggled in the second half. With the Padres seemingly trying to slash payroll it makes sense they shopped him before Tuesday’s non tender deadline. They get two pretty decent prospects in the deal. I still think Seattle is in the running for someone like Story or Semien

It comes down to the fact that SD didn’t need him, and instead of doubling down on that move and keeping him for $7.2M for another year, Preller sucked it up and got what he could for Frazier. He’s worth more than they got, but everybody knew he had a surplus to deal from which always diminishes return.

I think it’s the fact that everyone saw through that Frazier wasn’t the player he was in April to May. He had a .723 OPS in July, the month leading up to the trade and a .359 BABIP. July to the end of the year, he had a .680 OPS with a .314 BABIP. Sure, he has some value as a solid contact hitting/defense first 2B, but he was really good for about two-and-a-half months and reverted closer to the hitter he was in the 3-4 seasons prior. Also, what were you expecting from Frazier? Up until the first half of 2021, he was about a 2 WAR player who usually sat around 95-100 wRC+ with plus defense at second base. That’s not to say that Frazier had no value, but there was no way the Pirates were going to get back a Mackenzie Gore. Remember, the Pirates had asked about Marcano back when they traded Joe Musgrove, and it only took Frazier plus cash to get him. If the Padres were so high on him, Marcano has something that all of us aren’t seeing.

Agreed. This could have freed up Segura and his salary to be swapped for Kimbrel’s. That would have filled a gaping hole at closer and allowed them to take on a little less overall salary. They could have also maintained strong defense at the keystone and still had a hitter with a contact oriented approach on offense.

Frazier was picked up as insurance cause of Tatis Jr shoulder. Allowed them to move Cronenworth to ss.

Personally, I’d keep Tatis in the OF to replace Pham. Use Profar as a platoon partner against righties with Myers in the OF. Last year he hit .245/.352/.345 against righties batting left handed. So the OBP is there. You’re hoping for a bit more power next year.

Stick cronenworth at ss, use kim and a platoon lefty at 2b.

There’s no way they were going to non-tender a guy who was worth 4 WAR last year who’s projected for like $7.2M in arbitration. That’s just not even within the realm of possibilities.

There is a very good chance he would’ve been non tendered. Don’t act like it wouldn’t been some huge shock. He’s barely worth the $7 mil he’s making this year so it was definitely in the realm of possibility for a team trying to clear payroll. You’re just wrong. Not to mention teams don’t make decision based on past results, especially from a career season. 4 WAR from 2020 is meaningless for his future value. His projections are not good. 1.2 projected WAR per Fangraphs. Bleh

I’m sorry but this comment makes no sense. So Frazier isn’t worth a 1Y/$7.2M contract? He wouldn’t do better than that on the open market?

Why would Dipoto trade multiple players for someone who has a contract that is underwater and worthy of a non-tender? Do you think Dipoto is going to tender him a contract next week since he supposedly isn’t worth the projected $7.2M or will he non-tender him?

Think it through man, come on.

How on earth does trading Frazier signal a Padre rebuild? He didn’t really have a spot on the team when they acquired him, injury insurance, and got something for him to save his projected $7..2M salary to use on someone else. I see this as a small move before a big move, that’s how Preller and Co. seem to roll.

Bryant could play any one of 3B, 1B, LF, so for me he would be the better pickup since Toro and France (and Dylan Moore) can all play 2B along with Frazier

Rick Hahn and Kenny Williams are at the mercy of owner Jerry Reinsdorf when it comes to putting the final touches on the White Sox next championship team. JR’s already allowed his front office to pick up reliever Craig Kimbrel’s $16M team option and sign Kendall Graveman to a 3-year, $24M FA contract on top of last winter’s signing of premier closer Liam Hendricks. Kimbrel will likely be dealt, hopefully to help fortify an outfield that can use an experienced lefty bat and glove to help out in RF, perhaps Kevin Kiermaier from the Rays who could use an experienced closer.

I’m also convinced that Reinsdorf will authorize the money needed for his front office to fill it’s most glaring hole at 2B with the pursuit of former White Sox infielder Marcus Semien or ex-Cub Javier Baez. I also believe JR might sign off on the acquisition of a free agent SP like Robbie Ray in order to give his team the deepest rotation in the AL and perhaps all of MLB.

The Rays have picked up fairly expensive short term salaries in the past in order to help them compete in a tough AL East. They tend to trade for these players at the summer deadline with DH Nelson Cruz being the latest example last July. The potential also exists for the White Sox to kick in some extra cash in order to facilitate a trade this offseason.

IMO, this is a pure salary dump. The Padres didn’t really need Frazier in the first place, except maybe as a fourth outfielder and an extra bat at the trade deadline. The reliever Kerr, even if he makes some noise at the big league level, will likely ultimately go down with an injury. The other guy is a dime a dozen prospect. He’s 22 and still playing low A ball. Probably not someone to get real excited over.

The only reason Rosier was in low A ball still was the fact that he was just drafted last year. Was a college player. As several said above, he is a lottery pick. Way to soon to say he is good or bad.

I doubt either player the Padres got will ever play in MLB. Frazier fills a huge need for the M’s. They no longer ‘need’ Semien. Dipoto can go in a variety of ways to add bats to the offense. He still has his farm system intact and a ton of payroll flexibility. All of this while filling a pressing need at 2B for next to nothing. Toro should be happy moving to 3B.

The Padres get a roster spot opened up as with Cronenworth, Profar, and Kim they already have 2B (and possibly LF) covered.

I’m surprised the Pads couldn’t get more for Frazier but I’m happy for the Mariners. Super pleased if Passan is right and Frazier is a super-utility guy. Bring on Semien and Story!
Hey, if the Padres want to move Snell, too, the M’s have a half a box of donuts left (three jelly ones).

Why would they get more for Frazier? He cost them Marcano, who was probably overrated, and a pair of non-prospects when he had just played in the ASG and had 1 and a third years of control (and 2 potential playoff pushes) of control left. If teams weren’t willing to top that at the deadline, why would they do it now that the Padres burned one of those playoff pushes and he slumped down the stretch?

All of those ground ball singles Adam Frazier hits might find even more holes if the CBA eliminates the shift. Perhaps Jerry Dipoto has some insight to what is coming.

The Adam Frazier trade to the Mariners and the Eduardo Escobar signing by the Mets is a good omen for White Sox fans like myself who truly believe that 85-year old and generally frugal owner Jerry Reinsdorf will authorize the free agent acquisition of a top tier second baseman like Marcus Semien or Javier Baez to pair with All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson. I also believe JR will allow his front office to pursue a notable free agent SP, preferably southpaw CYA winner Robbie Ray.

The current White Sox team will most certainly be JR’s last chance for another baseball championship before he rides off into the sunset. Here’s hoping he goes out with his guns blazing.

Honestly that’s a good assessment. Grew up a Bulls fan, so if it’s not the Dodgers, I could get behind Jerry winning 1 before that sunset ride (thought 85yo for billionaires is a regular person’s 65)

Baez isn’t a TLR type player, so I don’t see that happening. If this is all about Reinsdorf and TLR before they die…they should go all in on Scherzer for 3 years.

I’d prefer Marcus Semien over Javier Baez, mainly because of his more patient approach at the plate. That said, either would be a huge upgrade at 2B and make for a dynamic double play combo with SS Tim Anderson.

Speaking of Anderson, there were many fans and pundits who were concerned that his personality would also clash with new manager Tony La Russa. That did not happen and should not with Baez. You might recall that La Russa has had his share of outspoken players in his HOF managerial career including 1989 ALCS MVP Rickey Henderson who also starred in the next round that culminated in TLR’s first of 3 World Series titles. Winning a championship is paramount and if Baez could help accomplish that along with TA7 that is all that matters.

The Frazier trade last year was a big mistake for the Pads as he didn’t fill a need at all. He’s a light hitter who doesn’t steal bases or walk much either. This is Preller admitting the mistake and moving on. Hopefully the $ will go towards bringing in another SP.

Yep, it was a bad trade to begin with. Preller seems to be fessing up to that, and now getting $ in return so he can hopefully fill an actual need. Getting Frazier made no sense, keeping him also makes no sense

Nope. Frazier will replace the Moores and the Bauers of the team. More of a utility who can start if needed, but I would say this makes Kris Bryant a more perfect fit.

Still in on semien and Story tho for sure

Also bear in mind that the Mariners traded at least one prospect who is at risk of being taken in the rule five draft for nothing. Now SD has to worry about him.

      That’s not accurate at all.

Rosier was drafted last year so he will not be rule 5 eligible for years. Kerr was already on the Mariners 40 man roster so he wasn’t eligible to be taken in the rule 5 either.

The point was that the Padres must now keep Ray Kerr on their 40-man roster to protect the lefthander from the Rule 5 draft.

Kerr can fill the 40-man roster vacancy left by the trade of Adam Frazier.

@Muskie yeah viewing it as Kerr requires a 40 man spot is more accurate. Thanks for the clarification.

Only thing I’d add is it’s not really about Rule 5 anymore now that he’s already on the 40 man. The hypothetical problem for SD is that to clear him off the 40 man roster they would have to expose him to outright waivers. For an acquiring team claiming him off waivers would be better then drafting him in Rule 5 since he has options remaining so they could send him to the minors, so if they tried to do this some team would grab him.

The result the same though either way – he’s going to take up a 40 man spot in the short term otherwise someone would take him away.

So what does “his bat plays best if he’s manning the keystone” mean? I think keystone refers to home plate, but I really have no idea lol.

“Keystone” refers to Second Base. At the top of the diamond. Like a decorative keystone above a window or an entrance.

Like I’ve said before, Preller is treating the Padres like a fantasy team. He signed Profar to back up Cronenworth, to some degree. Then signed Kim to back up Profar. Then traded for Frazier to back up Kim, who backs up Profar, who backs up Cronenworth.

And, of course, Cronenworth didn’t need a backup at all. He only missed four games thru Sept 10th.

“While a solid contributor, it would be difficult to rank him as a true ‘difference-maker.'” I don’t think that’s true. here’s a list of difference-makers who Frazier had a superior bWAR to in 2021:

    Ozzie Albies
    Matt Chapman
    Tommy Edman
    Rafael Devers
    Whit Merrifield
    Kris Bryant
    Kolten Wong

According to informed sources, The Marlins were in on Adam Frazier right up until he was dealt to join the Mariners.. The Marlins made a “strong” offer, but not one that matched the Mariners’ player commitment. The Marlins weren’t the only team to be outbid.

According to MLB stats Adam Frazier has the No. 2 fielding % (.991) and the No. 1 batting average (.310) of all second basemen. He beats Marcus Semien and all of the other top five free agent shortstops in these categories. They may hit for more power but Frazier deserves a lot more credit than he is getting. This was a steal.

Look at his career numbers not just the first half of last year. 280 hitter who gives you less than 10 HRs and SBs per 600 ABs. Weak

      Reply
      • Stevil

Yes, let’s look at some career numbers, Brewer88….

        Marcus Semien: .256/.324/.444
        Adam Frazier: .281/.344/.412

Petco arguably sapped the little power Frazier offers, but T-Mobile is more comparable to PNC in right field. Frazier should be fine and I’m not the first person to point that out..

That’s not a jab at Semien, either. What he’s done more recently, specifically in 2019 and 2021, is more important than his career numbers and nobody’s denying his value. He’s the better player.

What AlienBob stated isn’t wrong, either. Frazier has been valuable and probably is underrated.

Not saying Frazier has no value, he’s a good fielder at multiple positions and on a team with a potent lineup his high contact bat has value. But the Pads have better bat options at 2b (Cron and potentially Abrams) and Frazier as a corner OF is not an upgrade for them, nor most any team for that matter. His .069 OPS with Pads was undeniably abysmal. The comparison in today’s market to Semien is a bit silly. Semiens hitting numbers have been on a different career trajectory as will be demonstrated by the FA bidding for his services.

          You’re moving the goalposts.

First you suggested looking at career stats, now you’re suggesting looking at a small sample at Petco (which was .694, by the way) which is exactly what you said not to do in your first response!

But the point had nothing to do with his performance in San Diego. He didn’t fit there, nobody’s arguing otherwise. It’s about what he can offer Seattle and his career numbers in a comparable stadium are more telling.

And again, nobody’s suggesting Semien isn’t the better player. Frazier simply seems to be undervalued/underappreciated–especially for the cost to acquire.

Not at all, if you read with context. My comment was counter to Alienbob’s using stats just from first half of last year to suggest Frazier is all-star caliber, when he’s not trending in the direction at all (as evidenced by his lack of a career trend and return to those numbers in the later half of the 2021 season). He’s been quite consistently average, with zero power and speed. Semien on the other hand is trending in last few years so a comparison between he and Frazier is just stupid. But it’s in the eye of the beholder I guess…

He’s good but he’s not great by any means. This was a steal by the Mariners, but in no way are they getting anything close to Marcus Semien production. He’s a league average hitter who delivers plus defense at second base. I think he’ll be a slightly better hitter this year than in year’s prior, but nothing to the degree like he was this year. Still, I’m sure that any team will take a 100-105 wRC+ hitter with good defense at the keystone.
