Major League Baseball announced the Gold Glove winners tonight, as selected by managers, coaches, and statistical analysis. Twenty-five percent of the selection total was determined by SABR’s Defensive Index metrics, while the other 75 percent was determined by votes from all 30 managers and up to six coaches from each team. The utility Gold Glove was determined in a separate fashion, via a defensive formula calculated by SABR and Rawlings.

Wow they actually gave it to Ty France. Figured he would be overlooked for a bigger name
Ty France…. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ooo lah lah
Who is bigger than France? Johnathan India?
Tommy Uzbekistan
France is almost 400,000 sq km larger than Uzbekistan.
Bigger in terms of BMI?
I think he means in terms of a bigger name
Alejandro Kirk is the clear winner under that criteria.
Domingo German
RUSS IAnnucci?
Ron Mexico
Bill Columbia?
Omg, forgot about Ron Mexico, thank youuuu 🤣🤣🤣
hahaha, its one of my fantasy football team names #neverforget lol
Ron Mexico, the most interesting anchorman in the world. Stay classy Guadalajara
Dingler winning over Kirk is baffling. Kirk had 22 FRV, Dingler had 12.
BR shows Dingler as 1.1 dWAR versus Kirk 0.9. Doesn’t seem baffling to me. If anything, Narváez is the baffling one, as he had 1.9.
The statistical part of this is based on SABR’s Defensive Index metrics
According to that, Kirk had the most of any catcher in the AL with a 10.8. Next was Carlos Narváez with a 8.9, and finally Dingler with a 8.4.
So by ability, the worst AL nominated catcher got the gold glove.
I guess the voting went heavily against Kirk, since the stat was heavily in his favour.
Canuckle, maybe voters used their eyes instead of stupid saber stats. When computers first became big, there was an expression, GIGO: garbage in, garbage out. There are too many variables to only consider metrics.
Thankfully manager of the tear voting is purely based on provable metrics and not just vibes and narratives.
I m lnow you’re being sarcastic, but in fairness what else can that one be based on? What metrics are there that definitively tell you who the best manager is?
Without 162 catcher’s interference calls against him, Narvaez would have easily won.
Fenway, Narvaez was a great surprise but while his strengths were at the top, his weaknesses were at the bottom and his overall defense was definitely not deserving in my view of the award. With practice, he can win it next year if he can improve overall.
I’ve told you a million times to quit exaggerating.
We all know how accurate gold glove awards are. They are clean cut, and based solely off of the most objective statistics. Offensive stats and a players overall impact is never considered.
These awards are as bad as Hall of Fame voting… Remember these are the same people who gave Rafael Palmeiro a gold glove at first base in 1999 when he only played like 28 games there.
Teo Hernandez got bushwhacked again. But in all seriousness, Ty France over Vladdy ??? What an obtuse crackerjack process this turns out to be. Let’s send a petition with signatures to Manfred, maybe he will listen to us.
@Darthyen
If Raffy would have watched 5 more games on TV he would have been nominated. Seriously though, when there is technology that can calculate the spin rate of a baseball in 60′ 6″, people still swear by the eyeball test.
Nosaint, yes because watching gives you the full picture whereas as certain stats only provide a snapshot.
@deweybelongsinthehall
Watching lets you give offer an opinion while proper stats provides you evidence to offer an informed opinion. Stats are orders of magnitude better than the eyeball test.
Well then fire all the scouts.
Many teams have thinned out their scouting department and the ones that are left use stats to help inform their opinion on a player.
NoSaint, the fact that DRS can be so different from OAA and others suggests to me the eye test is often overlooked and voters simply use stats to assess. Having good other outfielders for example may hurt an individual if metrics are given too much weight because a player’s total outs may be less if their partners cover more ground than average. This is particularly true with corner OFs as the CF controls the outfield. just one example.
That is not how OAA works, my dude.
Even if it were, a GG is a performance stat. So you have to perform as the best fielder at your position. If you are in LF and your CF is catching your balls then you have performed worse than a LF who did catch that ball.
@deweybelongsinthehall
The reason that that DRS and OAA have different results is because they use different variables to get those results. Most notable is the players “arm”. DRS includes an arm variable in its calculation while OAA calculates the players ability to make an out. Different inputs are going to get you different outputs. It’s like fWAR and bWAR.
@whyhayzee
Since I’m a fan of the Jays I can only comment on what I’ve read about them. In their put hing complex, pitchers are exposed to biometrics (I think it’s something live motion capture) to analyze, assess, and if necessary correct a pitchers mechanics to improve efficiency while reducing injury. That’s letters after your last name level. No shade on scouts but I don’t think they have that kinda education. That’s science winning over the eyeball test.
@Superstar Prospect Wander Javier
A GG is primarily a vote/popularity contest.
No – Defensive stats are incredibly flawed, not the same thing as offensive stats. No technology can accurately rate the degree of difficulty on every defensive play. Hell, different websites can’t even agree on stats.
@Fever Pitch Guy
“Statcast and Tracking Systems: MLB’s Statcast system uses high-resolution optical cameras and military-grade radar to track the precise location and movement of every player and the ball. This generates massive amounts of data on metrics like:
Pitch velocity and spin rate.
Exit velocity and launch angle of batted balls.
Fielder reaction time, route efficiency, and arm strength, allowing for objective evaluation of defensive performance.”
By the very description of Statscast it literally refutes your claim “No technology can accurately rate the degree of difficulty on every defensive play”.
I’ve already posted on the reason for the difference in results of WAR between Fangraphs and Baseball reference. To be more granular, Fangraphs uses wRC+ for hitters while BR uses OPS+ for hitters. For pitchers, Fangraphs FIP and BR uses ERA. There are other variables each site uses in their calculation of WAR that the other does not. This is the reason for the discrepancy.
NoSaint – No offense, but you’re not the first person I’ve encountered who believes technology can replace every aspect of play evaluation.
I’m well aware of the cameras and radar, I think it’s a wonderful thing with regard to offensive stats.
But defensive stats? Comically flawed.
Like any complex system, there is always some degree of measurement error. Statcast had known flaws with specific measurements like vertical movement of pitches, who knows what else it’s measuring inaccurately?
The sheer number of possible game situations makes it difficult to perfectly rate the “degree of difficulty” on every single unique play. For example, the effect of weather or specific ballpark quirks are sometimes difficult to fully incorporate into the models. You have to consider context at all times.
NoSaint, we agree to disagree. Metrics are only as good as the data inputted and there are too many unconsidered variables in my opinion.
Superstar, there is no such thing as “your balls” (no pun intended). A center fielder is taught to cover as much ground as possible and if in position to call off the corner outfielder under most situations.
NoSaint, that’s exactly my point and one could argue for or against based on one set of metrics or worse, vote on only it when they lose voting should be spending time watching games and video before casting a ballot. I personally thought Abreu missed too many games to have won but I haven’t seen enough video of the others. Had I had a vote, I would have though.
Thanks Fever as you expressed it far better than I could have. I’m not even into metrics for offense because there still is at least right now the human element of umpiring. Let’s see what happens to Soto for example if those close pitches that always seem to go his way are called strikes. I don’t mean to pick on him as it goes back to Ted Williams as umps sometimes assumed it was a ball if he didn’t swing.
75% of voting came from coaches. Teams didn’t run on Dingler – Kirk was near the bottom in cs%
The Blue Jays were well represented.
With how good the Blue Jays were defensively this season, it’s very surprising to see them shutout of the Gold Glove awards, excluding France obviously as it was his work with the Twins that won him the award
It shows the importance of team defense and consistency.
Congrats to Ke’Bryan Hayes. He deserved it, just wish he could hit consistently.
Also nice to see Spencer Steer get a mention at first base, he demonstrated good glove work throughout. I personally think Olsen got a legacy nod there.
Jacob Webb moved from RP to CF? Good for him
I don’t think I’ve ever seen that move before.
Rick Ankiel was a SP. Great OF arm but no GG though.
Anthony Gose did the opposite.
I’m rooting for Joey Gallo right now.
It’s a very complicated move. Takes a lot of practice before putting it on TikTok.
Mookie Betts should have won the NL Gold Glove for SS & it’s a farce that he didn’t receive it
He got the fielding bible award. The fact that he was even a finalist is remarkable.
They made the correct call.
I laughed when the fox announcers were declaring him the GG winner a few days ago. Just because he wears Dodger blue and plays on a coast doesn’t make him the better shortstop. Watch Winn on a regular basis. He is top notch.
Agreed. Winn deserved it for sure, and Betts was merely a nice top-5 candidate.
Lindor is a better SS
He didn’t have his best defensive season this year, although Swanson is better as well.
Winn led all NL shortstops with 10 OAA (Betts had 6) and only committed 3 errors in 129 games. While that doesn’t necessarily guarantee a win for Winn, it does prove that his selection was no farce.
Sorry, 21 OAA for Winn, even better.
How was Cal Raleigh not nominated, let alone not win?
Because it’s a fielding based award and Raleigh played just about average at 0.1 dWAR.
0.1 war at catcher with all of those innings caught is still impressive but I agree this is not another platinum glove season
Advanced metrics were down this season – DRS from 17 to 2 (Narvaez 10, Kirk 9, Dingler 6), FRV from 14 to 7 (Kirk 22, Dingler 12, Narvaez 9). Threw out 21 percent of runners trying to steal compared to 28 percent last season.
He wasn’t bad, but there were definitley at least 3 AL catchers better than him defensively this year.
I will take Cal hitting 60 HRs over a GG. Now if he doesn’t win the GG there is a problem. I can see him missing out on MVP even though most fans without a NY or an A on their hat thinks he should win it. I get a fan of a player wants his team to win. And the Angels are so jealous of us they can’t root for any of our team yo do well.
You mean the Silver Slugger? Yeah, Raleigh is a shoo-in for that award.
When are the team awards announced?
Nick Allen had a real shot. Cowards
Cowards indeed. Nick was the best defensive SS this year
Given the games missed due to injuries, the selection still of Abreu shows how important he is to Boston given how tough RF is at Fenway. Having him and Rafaela for years to come likely means Duran is the odd man out barring injuries. His trade value is high and Yoshida has little value in comparison. The Sox need to make more two strike contact in 26 and replacing Duran witb Anthony and having Yoshida and a returning Ref or Gonzalez as a platooning DH is a start.
Dewey, gotta agree with you.. while Anthony doesn’t possess Durans speed( not may do) his better OBP ceiling will be a plus… Funny how the worst team in errors has two gold glove winners and 3 nominated.. can you imagine how bad it COULD have been..
Olm, the team can’t blame Devers for their overall lousy defense. I’m worried about how Story fell apart in September in the field and am hoping they move him to second (assuming Bregman returns). Mayer if not traded can take over at short but his injury history means another move is likely should Story move over.
Dewey- Is Mayer that strong of a defender at short and would it increase the likelihood of getting injured being at that position? I just assumed he would be at second and Story at short if he returns.
I agree that Story made too many errors. Not sure if it was the pressure or age is catching up to him.
Completely agree with Duran being the odd man out, I hope he has the trade value needed to improve the pitching. Really happy to see Rafaela and Abreu recognized. A healthy year of Abreu should provide both an offensive and defensive boost.
Uncle, Mayer seems to be the type who will end up injured regardless of position. My thought of moving Story to second is because he’s getting older, has an arm history and previously proved he was as good as anyone at second when he played there.
I just hope Abreu doesn’t turn out to be injury prone. Plus with the platoon issues maybe it’s best to trade him while his value is above zero. If I recall properly, he wasn’t a highly regarded prospect coming over from Houston…he kind of blossomed and surprised everyone.
Ignorant, you don’t need superstars at every spot and Abreu’s glove at Fenway is crucial to the team’s future success. As for injuries, I’m more worried about Mayer and Casas.
dewey – I think you can add Bregman and Story to the list of players that have injury concerns.
The only two everyday players who have been able to avoid injuries are Duran and Rafaela.
Unfortunately Abreu has already proven to be injury prone.
Fever, on your list of those able to avoid key injuries, you left off Campbell…
dewey – I thought of him, but he’s not really a regular on the Red Sox …. yet.
I love Abreu he’s a solid player a good defender but if he’s the request to get a #2 via trade you trade him. The fact is Roman Anthony played right field very well excellent jumps, solid speed to the ball, really good outfielder. If you look at the advanced defensive metrics Anthony was the better right fielder between him and Abreu. In far fewer innings in right field he had nearly as many defensive runs saved and all most as many outs above average defensively he did that in less than 1/3 innings of the gold glover. The only area that area that Abreu is better than Anthony is arm his arm is better. Still you plug Anthony in right and you never look back. His defensive ability is wasted in left field.
Hopefully Duran can headline the package for a #2 starter. It would be great to see Abreu and Anthony along with Rafaela in the outfield for the year. That would be a very impressive defense. It can make up for some of the shortcomings with the infield’s defense.
Duran even with less controllable years is in my view worth far more than Abreu to other clubs. That said, Anthony did not play enough RF for me to gauge but I know what Abreu can do. He’s a young Dwight Evans in my book although he likely will never bat like Dewey. Between his ability to play the unique RF at Fenway and that arm, nothing offered back would likely get me to include him in a trade. It’s not like the Pirates would accept him as a headliner for Skenes.
No Mookie Betts? Lame.
If the Jacob Webb typo could get fixed, that’d be great…
How is Masyn Winn a GG winner at SS? He had a DRS of 2. Betts had 17.
Because he’s a winner. Win is literally in his name. What has Betts won?
@VegasMoved
Him and Ohtani bet all the time!
Voting was apparently more in line with Statcast Fielding Run Value, which for 2025 had Winn at 17 and Betts at 3.
Except at C as Kirk led the AL with 22 FRV vs the #2 catcher Hedges at 14 – Dingler was 3rd at 12. Kirk led in framing and blocking (#2 was fellow Jay Tyler Heineman)..
Winn also had 21 outs above average. Betts was still good with 6 though.
Because DRS sucks compared to OAA, where Winn had 21 OAA compared to 6 for Betts, plus Winn only committed 3 errors in 129 games.
@Lanidrac
No, OAA is probably the worst evaluator and shouldn’t be considered. OAA credits covering more ground, but it may reward poor positioning rather than true fielding smarts. DRS uses data created by humans watching the plays and OAA is given by a computer.
DRS everyday, which is why I question why Masyn Winn got the award. Terrible decision, in my opinion. He wasn’t an elite SS.
Clement was robbed. An amazing fielder at 3B and 2B, worthy of the Gold Glove at either, and extremely worthy of the utility one. Kirk also is amazing behind the plate but I guess his body type is not appealing to voters or something.
Are you aware that Dubon played 7 different positiions this year – again, and was very good at all of them ?
Are you aware Clement was top 5 in DRS at both 3B and 2B plus played at SS and 1B? He could’ve done the OF as well but the backup there was Miles Straw who was Gold Glove caliber as well.
Astros_fan is right , Dubon was the right choice. I say this as a jays fan . Ernie had a great year but Dubon’s season, playing that many positions at a high level is the definition of utility. Always looked like the favorite.
@jnorthey
I agree with your assessment of Clements at 3B, SS, and 2B. Not so much at 1B though. His play there could be the reason for the Ty France’s acquisition.
Any Sox fan remember John Kennedy, their first utility player I can remember with Boston. His nickname was “Super Sub”.
Jacob Webb was robbed!
No Giancarlo Stanton in RF? What kind of awards are these?!
It’s only because he didn’t qualify but they should have made an exception.
I’ll keep my hopes up for Comeback Defensive Player of the Year for Valiant Participation.
Teoscar Hernandez is the one who truly got robbed, even surpassing Big G which is truly monumental. Poor Teo.
Did Devers play enough first base in SF to qualify to be considered?
249 innings at 1B. Just missed by an inning! Maybe next year, Rafael.
Doobie!!!!!!! All day, cuh
I hear Rafael Palmeiro just missed out on a nomination for 1B ;o)
Two players from the Boston Bad News Bears winning gold gloves? Now that’s funny.
Carlos Narvaez and Marcelo Mayer will be joining them next year.
Rafaela was a no brainer gold glove this year. It will be tough next season with a full season of Varsho in center.
Abreu was a worthy choice in right but right field is weak overall right now defensively. The Red Sox defensive problems weren’t in center field or right field they were excellent in those two positions, in fact left it would have been a travesty if they didn’t win it. Thought they had a chance to win a gold glove in all three outfield positions but Duran struggled with the wall in left. If the Red Sox trade Duran and it’s Anthony, Rafaela, and Abreu in the outfield I see a decent chance at a sweep next season in gold gloves in the outfield.
I didn’t watch enough games from other teams to have a strong opinion on these awards.
But I am proud of Betts being a finalist at SS. He worked extremely hard and it paid off. Looking forward to next year when he’s healthy to start the year.
And Miguel Rojas just does Miguel Rojas things.
The wrong Julio Rodriguez is listed under AL centerfold GG finalist.
Congrats to Wilyer on his 2nd and Ceddane on what should be his first of many. If his bat ever catches up to his glove Rafaela will be a beast
RSox, Rafaela should have won last year as the utility guy if not CF. Due to injuries and need, he played short (not great) and second (good). When the Sox were in last place in prior years and there were few MLB highlights to look for, us Sox fans were watching his daily theatrics in Worcester.
Rafaela should just pretend every at bat is a walk-off situation. The kid was pretty impressive in the clutch.
Congrats to Tyler Soderstrom for being a finalist, since he was switched to that position mid-season and started out as a catcher, and then a first baseman. Bright future ahead for that young man.
I don’t think that the OF GGs should be parsed out by specific OF position. It is always laughable to see who is a finalist for LF. Tommy Pham, really? And Justin Upton was a finalist for several years.
You might say that corner outfielders might be overlooked. But Larry Walker, Barry Bonds, Tony Gwynn, and Ichiro Suzuki won quite a few GGs from corner OF spots before the OF GGs were separated.
Agreed. Aside from rare exceptions, if an outfielder is an elite fielder, he won’t be playing much LF in the first place. LF is generally where the worst fielding outfielders play (at least when not at DH), or maybe RF if the guy has a great arm but lead feet and glove.
CF then of course easily takes the most skill in the OF to play and play well, although some elite defensive RFers do also exist from time to time.
Pete Crow Armstrong is still jumping for those Brewers HRs to centerfield
Not in Wrigley he wasn’t! And Owen Caissie learned the biggest lesson he’ll ever learn in his cup of coffee. Bricks are hard.
Amazing! The Minnesota Twins have had the last two Gold Gloves at First Base, yet claim they have no one to play First Base.
Bryce Harper being a finalist at first base seems kind of crazy to me. He’s not a good first baseman and has poor instincts at the position and his inexperience shows.
Remember a year or two ago Juan Soto was nominated for Right Field. Now that’s crazy
Turang was robbed
No he wasn’t.
Or perhaps Nico was robbed last year (2024). Both outstanding defensive (and pretty dang good offensive players).
Turang deservedly better last year—hard to beat how Nico played this year.
Imagine this can be a yo yo between them as long as they stay in the National League.
Valiant point, both deserving. Hoerner got the nod.
Hoerner’s 14 OAA was the best in baseball. Which is pretty amazing since because of his last offseason arm surgery he rehabbed all this season while not missing a game. Happ said he didn’t even throw pre-game til August.
You mean at 2B? There were a couple of SS at the very least who had more.
Brewers have the best record in baseball and make the final four (to do this you need to have a super solid fundamental team and do defense and the little things better than basically everybody else).
Yet Turang and Frelick, last years winners and the owners of the best metrics, both fail to win this year? Hmmm
What metrics are you talking about exactly? Nearly all metrics favor Hoerner over Turang.
I feel like Frelick was DEFINITELY DESERVING. Turang had tough competition this year with Hoerner, but still was outstanding.
Frelick to me was the obvious choice, his glove has been remarkable and flips games at certain points.
Guess the season wasn’t a total waste then; Jared Triolo was named a finalist
No Vlad, no Kirk no Ernie Clement??? But they gave it to Ty France. What
France? he started 113 games. isnt there a “min # of games/innings” should be played???
I guess he kinda fell into the award
No minimum *cough* Palmeiro *cough*, but 113 games isn’t an unreasonably small amount if he was just that much better. That part is probably debatable, though.
Moderator- fix the Julio Rodriguez link
Soderstrom? converted catcher. Who had $ on that one.
They gave it to vlad’s back up over vlad lol
Also, no varsho seems strange. Perhaps his repaired shoulder and subsequent wonky throwing arm held him back?!!?!!!
Varsho hardly played
How does Cal Raleigh not even get a sniff for a Gold Glove? The dude played 159 games and had zero passed balls during the regular season. He had one in the LCS. I could care less about how many runners you throw out, a lot of that comes down to the pitchers holding runners on more than throwing stats. But zero PB’s in that many games & not even in the top 3! And I am not a Raleigh fan. How does Clement get 2 nominations at 2 different positions. You either play 1 position or another, you shouldn’t have a chance to win 2 awards.
Too bad that throwing out runners does indeed matter quite a bit, even after accounting for the pitchers. Plus, there’s also framing, and we haven’t switched over to the ABS challenge system quite yet.
By the way, only 131 of those games played were actually at catcher. That’s still a lot for a catcher, but don’t go trying to trick people into thinking he played almost every game behind the plate.
Clement was only nominated at 3B.
Oh, Clement was nominated at Utility as well. I see they still haven’t fixed that bug in the voting. I remember the first year of the Utility Gold Gloves when Brendan Donovan won in the NL over the much superior candidates of Tommy Edman and Daulton Varsho, because the other two had their votes split by also being finalists at a separate position.
The folks who run baseball are so dumb. The NFL commands the agenda when the announce schedules or start free agency or give an award.
Baseball announces Gold Gloves at 9 O’Clock on a Sunday night literally the same calendar day as the World Series ends.
If they want people to care, they have to promote their product better.
Gold Glove awards have been a joke for years now.
Lazy… idiotic comment.
How on earth did Tatis win over Frelick?
So
Where are the people saying that because cal religh was a great catcher behind the dish and he wasn’t a finalist this year? Just shows he wasn’t the winner still.
Congrats to Ty France! Vibe la France!!!🇫🇷
