The impact position players are off the market for the most part at this point, and yesterday the top starter remaining followed suit as Framber Valdez landed with the Tigers on a three-year, $115MM deal. That leaves right-hander Zac Gallen as both the final remaining qualified free agent and the best starting pitcher still available. Gallen’s market has been a bit deflated coming off the weakest season of his career, though with a lifetime 3.58 ERA and 3.65 FIP across 1007 1/3 big league innings there’s no doubt that he could still impact a rotation-needy team if he can get back on track. Which teams would the right-hander be the best fit for, and where will he ultimately land? A few of the most likely options:
Arizona Diamondbacks
For a qualified free agent who lingers on the market, sometimes a homecoming simply makes the most sense. The Diamondbacks are the only team in the majors that wouldn’t forfeit a draft pick in order to bring Gallen into the fold, and that alone makes them a sensible fit. Beyond that, the Arizona pitching staff is in serious need of help. Adding Gallen would be prudent, given the team’s lack of experienced rotation depth and a fifth starter (Michael Soroka) who has had durability concerns. His addition could push some of those depth starters into the mix for a bullpen that lacks impact options with Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk both set to open the season on the injured list. The biggest obstacle for a reunion between Arizona and Gallen is money; ownership hasn’t been shy about their desire to bring down a payroll that has sat in the $190MM range over the past two years, and unless ownership makes an exception for a beloved longtime D-back, the Snakes are more or less at their limit.
Baltimore Orioles
The O’s entered the season with a need to upgrade the rotation. They’ve acquired Shane Baz and re-upped with Zach Eflin, but neither is a surefire front-of-the-rotation arm. That’s also true of Gallen after that shaky 2025 showing, but at his peak he’s been the type of arm Baltimore seeks. Adding Gallen to a rotation including Trevor Rogers, Kyle Bradish, Baz, Eflin and Dean Kremer would be a more aggressive approach than the O’s took last winter when signing back-end veterans like Tomoyuki Sugano and Charlie Morton to one-year deals. Baltimore’s payroll is still nearly $20MM shy of last year’s Opening Day mark, so there shouldn’t be any major financial hurdles.
Chicago Cubs
The Cubs have already had a big offseason, headlined by their Alex Bregman signing and a trade for Marlins righty Edward Cabrera. The Cabrera trade has given the Cubs a deep cache of starting pitching options that’s pushed Colin Rea and Javier Assad into depth roles, and even more help figures to be on the way when rehabbing southpaw Justin Steele returns at some point in the first half. Even so, the team’s starting pitching options all have worrisome injury histories. That includes Cabrera, who briefly went on the IL with an elbow issue back in September. Adding a healthy workhorse like Gallen could make plenty of sense to raise the floor, and with talented arms like Steele, Cabrera, and Cade Horton in the mix Gallen might be under less pressure to deliver the ace-level results he’s flashed in the past.
San Diego Padres
The Padres have been clear about their desire to add another starter, and Gallen could be just the sort of high-upside arm the team needs to credibly replace Dylan Cease. It wouldn’t be the first time president of baseball operations A.J. Preller pulled off a major move in the final months before Opening Day. Cease was acquired in March of 2024, while righty Nick Pivetta signed with San Diego last February. The biggest obstacle to Gallen following in their footsteps could be financial, as it’s unclear just how much wiggle room the Padres have left. Perhaps the team working out the details of veteran righty Yu Darvish‘s possible exit from the club could create the budget space necessary to land Gallen.
Other Options
While the aforementioned quartet of clubs are perhaps the most likely destinations for Gallen, they aren’t the only ones. Detroit could have made sense as a Gallen suitor, but their agreement with Valdez surely takes them out of the starting pitching market at this point. The Angels have been connected to the right-hander recently, but they’re viewed as a bit of a long-shot and are by far the least competitive team among this group. Atlanta is known to be shopping for a veteran starter, but it’s unclear if the team has the stomach for the sort of $20MM+ annual salary for which Gallen figures to be searching. The Blue Jays were connected to Valdez shortly before he signed, suggesting a willingness to continue adding to their rotation, but Gallen might not be viewed as impactful enough to justify pushing Cody Ponce and Jose Berrios out of the fifth starter job. The Giants were also connected to Gallen earlier in the winter but have since signed Adrian Houser and Tyler Mahle. President of baseball ops Buster Posey downplayed the idea of adding another starter last week, but the San Francisco rotation has both injury and workload concerns behind ace Logan Webb.

The O’s have a very light draft penalty and just missed out on Valdez. This is why they get Gallen.
I sure hope not.
Gallen is a great bounce back candidate but that QO and loss of draft pick probably edits out a lot of teams—the Giants almost certainly.
Why. He was absolutely the best choice for the Orioles going into the offseason, including both free agents and potential trade targets, and he certainly the best choice for them now. He’s literally the best picture available. He had two and a half bad months in his entire career. You don’t suddenly fall from being a top of the rotation guy at 29.
What’s all this talk about gallons and pictures?
You’re delusional and clearly you don’t know baseball. Not only is he an excellent fit for Baltimore but he is the best fit for baltimore. Valdez would have been terrible for their clubhouse. He claims to be 32 and he might even be 35. Aging and not worth the money. Suarez is aging and not worth the years. Soft tossing left-handers like both of them are do not bode well for the American League east and the back end of that contract is going to look really bad. Valdez wouldn’t have been the best clubhouse guy as we all know, and he clearly was using Baltimore for leverage and Holding Out for a better contract because he didn’t want to come to Baltimore to begin with. Why would you want that person in the clubhouse. Gallon is an excellent Clubhouse guy. And is the best picture out of the three. Anybody can have a bad two and a half month stretch. He started the season bad. He finished like an ace. A 3.30 era in his last 11 starts. He had 17 starts against teams with a winning record, which led the majors. In 10 of those starts he pitched six Innings and gave up two runs or less. And the other seven his era was slightly below four. So against winning teams, and down the stretch, he turned up when it counted the most. A lot of the same people that think that gallon is a bad fit based off of having a bad beginning to the season are the same people who think that Trevor Rogers is going to be one of the best pictures in baseball based off of the best two and a half month stretch of his entire life. Anyone can go into a slump and anyone can have a hot stretch. Gallon is on top of the rotation starter. Rogers is the middle of the rotation starter. And having them both in the same rotation along with the other pieces the Orioles have would be excellent
There is literally no one in our current rotation that I would replace with Gallen, and that is before even factoring in his cost.
Gallen should stay in Arizona.
I’m pretty sure you are the one that doesn’t know baseball.
I’m surprised to see 21 other optimistic Angel fans hoping Arte will let Perry spend some money.
actually a pretty quintessential Angels move. A veteran player on the decline that 29 teams are uninterested in.
ouch, too close.
Bbb
“29 teams are uninterested in.”
That will almost certainly be proven wrong shortly
I think it’s more that he fits the Angels mold. A solid pitcher, that isn’t injury prone. That is coming off a down year. Allows them to sign him, for less than he would have gotten last offseason. And hope he bounces back.
I think he will end up with a smaller market club. My guess is either the A’s or Pirates. I will vote for the A’s.
Thinking the same hoping the Pirates
I’m agreeing A’s can be viewed as a dark horse
Pirates make sense but not sure they’d want to do it because of the lost draft pick. Blue Jays may make more sense of an all-in club.
I don’t think Elias gives up any pick for a one year contract and that’s all Gallen will get. Plus he lives in Phoenix where his wife is from. He’s going back.
Fair point, but a lot of MLBers make their offseason homes in Arizona. If their wives don’t live there then their girlfriends do.
Rarely both though.
Ba dum tsssss
Thank you. And hey, try the veal and don’t forget to tip your waitress. Good night, everybody!
I’m sure the Pirates will suddenly become interested and miss
They’re highly interested in finishing second in the bidding, very aggressively.
as a giants fan, I am glad that someone else gets to deal with that, though it would be nice if we actually were in on anyone
Would you have given Framber 40 million, the contracts being handed out are insane
No, but I’d rather they not waste their time talking to players they have no chance with. Framber was clearly getting $30M+ AAV somewhere, which means the Bucs would have had to offer what, 2/70? 3/100? Would be shocked if they went above 2/60 or 3/90, in which case the offer was another PR move rather than a true attempt to sign someone.
I can’t believe he’s not already on the Phillies. Always seemed like the biggest no brained to replace Ranger and slow play the Wheeler injury/painter call up
Yes, you are. Shame on you. This has been a public service announcement
I’ve had him going to Baltimore all along, but I could see the Pirates maybe sealing this deal (if we think their interest in Framber was truly serious). Baltimore needs the pitching, and Pittsburgh seems to know how to develop it. He’d be a good fit on either team.
Gallen does not need developing, and PIT does not need pitching. They want a statement signing but they need another bat. AZ needs another reliable arm, BAL needs a better #1 and both have more money than PIT has ever shown interest in spending. I say AZ because of the pick.
Kremer isn’t as bad as you’re making him out to be.
Strongly disagree. I dont consider gallen an ace and he shouldnt be paid that way. But he is typically healthy, which is better than 4 5ths of our rotation. Bradish and baz have more potential perhaps, but there is no one in that rotation that is currently more of a 3/4 starter. Gallen is a solid 3, potential to go to a #2 if he reverses trends. Not saying we should sign him,but he does offer more than what we already have
Brewers need an effective veteran starter, but Gallen may cost more than a reunion with Quintana — who was effective in 2025 and is still unsigned.
I think the QO hurt his market more so than others that had it attached.
That seems to happen to one guy every year.
Usually a Boras client.
Absolutely.
A guy coming off a near 5.00 ERA with an ugly Statcast page is not a guy most teams want to surrender a draft pick to sign, especially since he probably also wants an opt out after the first year.
After I submit mine I never even look at them until April or May. Then I realize I have no idea what went on or what will go on in the future, and then I get a beer.
I think he and Diamondbacks work out a one-year deal, but probably around the QO money.
I’m definitely worried that the Orioles will sign him, but hopefully Elias’ aversion to giving up draft picks for middling free agents wins out in the end.
For one year, I’d rather take JV.
“I can fix him.”
That would be why, I’d guess.
Maybe Elias gets Bassit? He wouldn’t be a bad one-year deal for the Orioles and wouldn’t break the bank.
I would be fine with that, or Giolito.
We are already in a much better place rotation wise than we were at this time last year and really just need another solid, stable veteran to slot in ahead of Kremer to start the year, and then target another playoff starter at the trade deadline if need be.
Floch
While I agree the rotation is better, almost all on the back end, it is a situation where the floor is higher but the ceiling is still too low.
Its still the worst rotation in the division. Adding Gallen may be the only one to move the needle and make it within shouting distance of 4th.
I’m not sure Gallen makes any more difference than Bassitt or Giolito, and it could honestly be less.
The dodgers could use a batting practice pitcher.
I wouldn’t be so sure of that. I feel like he may be a good rebound candidate.
My sarcasm was the Dodgers spending lavishly on a batting practice pitcher, not a jab at Zac’s talent.
Get a room.
White Sox need to go in on him and move Newcomb to the bullpen.
The White Sox are nearing the end of their rebuild but not ready to forfeit a second round draft pick and $500k of international bonus pool money. They will go cheaper for one of the remaining mid-tier veterans to eat innings and potentially become a summer trade chip. By then Drew Thorpe should be ready to assume his spot in the rotation following his March 2025 TJ surgery. Additionally, Hagen Smith and/or Noah Schultz could also be primed for their MLB debut.
Come on man. Quit using your head. He would look good in a White Sox uniform and 4 right handed starters would be a great idea. You don’t think the Sox could flip him at the trade deadline? Can’t eat innings?
Korea
Dude, are you chasing this guy through two different comment sections?
The Jays had interest in him at the trade deadline and they have already given up there 2nd and 4th for Cease so it is possible. Move Ponse to closer and Berrios to long relief until a trade can happen. Jays could use more bullpen and it is isn’t available might as well try converting a SP to RP. Jays like pitchers who throw the curveball. For what it is worth though I voted the Angels. Based on how my predictions went it will probably be the Orioles.
Pittsburgh id guess
Cubs are out on Gallen. Unless something changes, that’s what I heard about 2 weeks ago.
For what it’s worth, that doesn’t include local baseball “insider” Bruce Levine who is more insistent than ever that Zac Gallen will be a Cub and perhaps be their starter on opening day.
Gallen’s QO might be less impacting to the Cubs since they are gaining some compensation with the loss of FA Kyle Tucker. The Cubs may have ample rotation depth now but are also facing the possibility of losing 3 SP’s to free agency following the 2026 season. With that in mind, they may be amenable to giving Gallen a 2-3 year contract with no opt-out until after 2027.
Gallen to Yankees.
How about Detroit go for a two-fer and get Gallen to really stabilize the rotation? You can never have too many starters.
Zac Gallen is about to become the next Jordan Montgomery. There is no reason he is not with a TEAM ALREADY. Scott Boras is going to screw another player over.
If Zac Gallen is “about to become the next Jordan Montgomery” that is a good reason why he is not with a team already. That said, I don’t have a crystal ball nor do, I suspect, any MLB front offices.
@Steinbrenner
You really don’t like “This one belongs to the Reds”.
If he can’t stay with the Diamondbacks, I’m sure Gallen would like to at least sign with a team that trains in the Phoenix area since he lives there. So possibly Padres or Cubs if not staying with the Backs. Gallen is originally from the Jersey side of the Philly area. Even though the Phils train in Florida, I’m sure he wouldn’t mind being there with his first manager Don Mattingly being the Phils new bench coach, but the Phils aren’t going to spend more money unless they can find a taker for Tijuan Walker. Not likely…
Does anyone agree that the Phillies could swoop in and get Gallen on a 1- or 2-year contract ?
My “wild-card/ out of left field” (to whatever extent) picks are the phillies or the Priates on a 1-2 year deal. Realistically it’s probably the Orioles or Snakes
Phillies scoop em out of nowhere. Heard it here 1st!!
I know at this point it’s a pipe dream due to Moreno’s incompetence but, I hope the Angels will get off their backside and do something to actually improve the team.
The Angels do have a way of scooping up all of the less-than-mediocre free agents.
I agree with PhightinPhils!
Cubs? Taillon, Boyd, Imanaga all free agents after this upcoming season. Cubs won’t resign all of them. Taillon has recurring back issues. Imanaga got lit up in the second half last year. Injury related? Gallen is pretty durable. Why not? Better to have too much than not enough starting pitcher.
Makes sense because the Cubs won’t resign ANY of them. 2027 has Steele, Horton, Assad (who seems very undervalued), maybe Wiggins… and drops off from there.
You forgot about Cabrera, but yea, cubs make sense on nothing less than a 3 year with no opt outs, but if that happened, I think they would try to move Taillon. With Steele likely back in June that rotation is already crowded for 2026.
Opinions about Gallen aside, it is interesting to me how highly teams value the draft pick, in general. I think most front offices are flattering themselves: they will probably mess up the draft pick anyway. If I were a POBO, I think I’d go with the free agent instead, the bird in hand.
2025 Orioles Opening Day rotation:
Eflin
Rodriguez (got hurt all year)
Bradish (missed nearly entire year)
Sugano
Kremer
Added: Morton when Rodriguez deemed out
Backup plan: Suarez (got hurt), Wells (hurt), Gibson (godawful), Povich (not MLB quality), Young (not MLB quality)
Others:
Rogers (18 starts – unsustainable level)
2026 Possible Projected rotation
Bradish
Rogers
Gallen
Baz
Kremer
Backup plan: Eflin, Wells, Povich
It is undeniable that the floor is much higher in 2026…slightly higher still adding Gallen. But that ceiling can decapitate a midget, and other division teams have 1 or 2 starters clearly better than the top of the Orioles.
Ideally Eflin and Wells are there for long relief/spot starts and can step in when someone goes down. Povich stays 2-3 IP max relief.
We will hear “imagine what this team could be if it had a top of the rotation starter” a lot this season.
The Cards need vet status somewhere in this team and it might as well be a workhorse on an inventive-laden deal, one or two year. Got one bonafide starter and a closer in Romero. You’re paying for leadership, a guide. As long as he understands this is lot a contending team, it could be fruitful
Why would a newly rebuilding team like the Cardinals forfeit a draft pick and international bonus pool dollars to sign a QO recipient like Zac Gallen?
Secondly, why would Gallen even consider going a team like the Cardinals in the first place?
Diamondbacks acquire Gallen. Dodgers acquire Diamondbacks.
Phillies sign the South Jersey native, 3/$75M, option for 4th year at $30M w/ $5M buyout ($80M guaranteed).
Mets
I hope the Brave don’t get desperate and make an offer. 20+ million plus losing a first round pick is too high a price.
back to AZ makes the most sense bc of the QO, but if Gallen wants to optimize for a good pillow deal before heading back to free agency, pitching in a ballpark like petco with a coach like niebla is the place to go
