Clemens Leaves Door Open For Pitching In 2013

By Mike Axisa | September 22, 2012 at 5:59pm CDT

Speaking at today's Astros Legends Luncheon, Roger Clemens left the door open for pitching again next year according to Zachary Levine of The Houston Chronicle (on Twitter). Earlier this month we learned that the seven-time Cy Young Award winner would like to be with Houston in 2013.

Clemens, 50, has made two starts for the independent Sugar Land Skeeters in recent weeks. He threw eight shutout innings total and ran his fastball up into the upper-80s. The Astros did scout his outings and team owner Jim Crane did confirm that he's open to signing the veteran right-hander. Clemens is scheduled to appear on the Hall of Fame ballot for the first time next year, but pitching in a big league game would rest his five-year waiting period.

Olney’s Latest: Melky, Athletics, Ozzie, Peavy

By Mike Axisa | September 22, 2012 at 10:50am CDT

In today's Insider-only blog post, ESPN's Buster Olney says Melky Cabrera's decision to withdraw his name from the batting race set a dangerous precedent even though the player's union supported the move. Here are Olney's rumors…

  • Commissioner Bud Selig is quietly gathering club votes to help the Athletics as they attempt to move to San Jose. Once they have enough support, MLB will be in a better position to push the Giants to make a deal for their territorial rights.
  • Olney would be surprised if the Marlins retain manager Ozzie Guillen. The club feels there is a disconnect between Guillen and his players as well as the community.
  • Mike Rutsey of The Toronto Sun suggests that Jake Peavy could be a match for the Blue Jays this offseason, but Olney thinks the right-hander would prefer to sign with a team that gives him a better chance to win.

2013 Vesting Options Update

By Mike Axisa | September 22, 2012 at 8:56am CDT

With two weeks left in the season, here's an update on the various vesting options for 2013 from around the league…

  • Brett Myers, White Sox — $10MM option vests with 45 games finished or based on a points system. Myers has finished 39 total games this season and the ChiSox have 12 games remaining. This one is unlikely to vest but is still possible.
  • Kevin Gregg — $6MM option vests with 50 games finished. Gregg finished only 13 games before the Orioles released him last weekend.
  • Jason Bartlett — $5.5MM option vests with 432 plate appearances. Bartlett came to the plate just 98 times with the Padres before hurting his knee and getting released last month. Like Gregg's, this one won't vest.

Chipper Jones has an option worth $9MM+ that will vest with 123 games played, but he's already rendered the option moot by announcing his plans to retire after the season. He recently said that he won't change his mind about retirement despite his strong play as well. Chipper has played in 103 of the Braves' 151 games, so this one isn't even mathematically possible anymore.

Alex Gonzalez has an option worth $4MM that will vest with 525 plate appearances, but he missed the majority of the season with a torn ACL. Gonzalez came to the plate just 89 times before the injury, so the Brewers do not have to worry about this one kicking in.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Dodgers, Davis, Montero

By Mike Axisa | September 21, 2012 at 11:45am CDT

On this date four years ago, the Yankees played their final game in the old Yankee Stadium. The Bronx Bombers won the game over the Orioles by the score of 7-3, and the final pitch in the House that Ruth Built was thrown by Mariano Rivera. The last homer hit there came off the bat of … Jose Molina. Just like they drew it up. Here's this week's look at the baseball blogosphere…

  • A's Farm has a transcript of Athletics manager Bob Melvin's recent chat with bloggers.
  • Dr. Strangeglove wrote about the possibility of Pirates GM Neal Huntington getting fired.
  • Wahoo's on First wonders if the Indians should fire manager Manny Acta.
  • Lasorda's Lair says all of the Dodgers' recent spending has yet to pay off.
  • MLB Injury News wrote about the contract the Rangers gave the injured Colby Lewis.
  • Dorm Room GM thinks that the Athletics could be a trade fit for Ike Davis.
  • U.S.S. Mariner says that the Mariners should consider trading Jesus Montero.
  • Rays Colored Glasses tries to figure out B.J. Upton's future.
  • DRays Bay lists the Rays starting pitchers who could be traded soon.
  • 85% Sports wrote about the Cardinals possibly calling up top prospect Oscar Taveras.

Central Notes: Inge, Francona, Tigers, Indians, Pirates

By Mike Axisa | September 19, 2012 at 9:47pm CDT

"I'll be ready for spring," said former Tiger and current Athletic Brandon Inge to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (Twitter link). Inge recently had season-ending shoulder surgery. Here is the latest from baseball's two Central divisions…

  • Terry Francona's name is "already making the rounds" as a possible hire for the Tigers or Indians this winter, writes Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. It's unclear if Cleveland would even be able to afford the former Red Sox skipper, however.
  • Pirates owner Bob Nutting is looking into his club's operations according to Dejan Kovacevic of The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, including the draft, player development, and free agent spending. Kovacevic says he "won’t be surprised in the slightest if (Nutting) takes action once this season ends."
  • MLB.com's Peter Gammons wrote about the Brewers and GM Doug Melvin, who has made moves to help bring the club back to contention during his ten years at the helm. Our Transaction Tracker has a list of Melvin's moves, which include deals for CC Sabathia and Zack Greinke.

Berkman Discusses Potential DH Role

By Mike Axisa | September 19, 2012 at 7:41pm CDT

Late last month we heard that Lance Berkman was leaning towards calling it career after the season, but that does not mean his decision is final yet. The currently injured Cardinal spoke to Derrick Goold of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch about potentially coming back next year as a DH with an AL club (Sulia link).

"I wouldn't want to just limp around as a DH," said Berkman, who continues to battle knee problems. "If I can't get [my knee] back pretty close to where it's 100 percent, I'm not going to fool with it."

There has been some speculation that the 36-year-old Berkman could join the Astros and fill their DH spot next season after they move into the AL. He came up with Houston in 1999 and remained there until the 2010 trade deadline, when they traded him to the Yankees as part of their rebuilding effort. Berkman has played just 31 games this year due to continued knee issues, which have hampered him for years.

D’Backs Designate Cole Gillespie For Assignment

By Mike Axisa | September 19, 2012 at 5:44pm CDT

The Diamondbacks have designated Cole Gillespie for assignment, the team announced. The move creates room on the roster for Mike Jacobs.

Gillespie, 28, hit .308/.390/.494 with 13 homers in 510 plate appearances for Arizona's Triple-A affiliate this season. He's a career .236/.292/.391 hitter in 120 big league plate appearances, which span the 2010-2011 seasons. The D'Backs originally acquired Gillespie from the Brewers for Felipe Lopez back in 2009.

Rangers To Extend Colby Lewis

By Mike Axisa | September 17, 2012 at 12:55pm CDT

12:55pm: Lewis can earn up to $4MM in incentives based on games started and active service time.

11:59am: The Rangers and Colby Lewis have agreed to a one-year contract extension for 2013 according to John Blake, the team's Executive Vice President of Communications (on Twitter). Lewis' deal is worth $2MM in guaranteed money plus incentives, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports (on Twitter). The Octagon client had been on track for free agency this coming offseason, but he's on the 60-day disabled list and hasn't pitched since July.

Lewis, 33, signed a two-year, $5MM contract with the Rangers in January of 2010 after pitching in Japan for two years. The deal worked out well for the Rangers, who exercised their 2012 club option for Lewis after the guaranteed portion of the two-year deal expired.

The right-hander has started 16 games for this year's Rangers team, posting a 3.43 ERA with 8.0 K/9 and 1.2 BB/9 in 105 innings. However, he last pitched on July 18th and is expected to miss the remainder of the 2012 season and the beginning of the 2013 season with a torn flexor tendon. From 2010-12, Lewis posted a 3.93 ERA with 8.1 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9 in 506 1/3 innings with Texas.

The Rangers' projected 2013 rotation includes Lewis, Yu Darvish, Derek Holland and Matt Harrison. Martin Perez and Neftali Feliz could also contribute, but Ryan Dempster will hit free agency.

Ben Nicholson-Smith contributed to this post.

Poll: The Second NL Wild Card Spot

By Mike Axisa | September 15, 2012 at 7:54pm CDT

When commissioner Bud Selig and the rest of MLB’s leadership implemented the new playoff system earlier this year, one of the goals was create more excitement and races at the end of the season. The Braves came into the day with a comfortable five-game lead for the first Wild Card spot, but the second spot is very much up for grabs.

The Cardinals currently lead the race for the second Wild Card spot, but the Dodgers and Pirates sit just two games back. The surging Brewers are just three games back, the Phillies and Diamondbacks four back. By the end of the night, the race could be even closer. With roughly 17 games left to play and six teams legitimately in the running for that second Wild Card spot, expect there to be a mad dash to the finish line for the right to play Atlanta in a one-game playoff.

Free Agent Stock Watch: Daisuke Matsuzaka

By Mike Axisa | September 15, 2012 at 5:55pm CDT

Six years ago this month, Daisuke Matsuzaka was the best pitcher in the world not employed by an MLB team. He dominated Nippon Professional Baseball with the Seibu Lions, winning the league strikeout title four times from 2000-2006. The Lions posted him after 2006, and the Red Sox won his negotiating rights (for $51M+) and then signed him to a six-year contract (worth $52MM).

Uspw_6314944Things are much different now, as Dice-K is a few weeks away from becoming a free agent for the first time time in his career. He helped Boston win a World Series in 2007 and finished fourth in the Cy Young Award voting in 2008 (18-3, 2.90 ERA), but things have gone downhill since. Matsuzaka pitched to a 5.76 ERA while missing considerable time with a groin injury in 2009. He stayed reasonably healthy in 2010 but pitched to a 4.69 ERA. After allowing 24 runs in his first 37 1/3 innings of 2011, Dice-K underwent Tommy John surgery.

Matsuzaka, 32, has posted a 7.14 ERA with 8.3 K/9 and 4.0 BB/9 in 40 1/3 innings this season since coming off the DL. All of the hype from 2006-2007 is gone, and that six-year contract expires after the season. It's been four years since Dice-K's last sub-4.50 ERA, five years since his last sub-4.0 BB/9, and five years since his last 200-inning season. He has said he would like to pitch until he's 40, though he'll head into this offseason as a reclamation project.

The starting pitching free agent market offers a number of reclamation types, including Colby Lewis, Erik Bedard, and Carl Pavano, all of whom are older than Matsuzaka. A move to a pitcher's park should help his numbers, as would a potential shift to the NL. There wasn't any interest in the right-hander when the Red Sox put him on waivers last month, but that's not surprising given his salary ($10MM). Agent Scott Boras has a way of finding better than expected contracts for his clients, but it's tough to see him getting Dice-K anything more than a one-year, low-base salary deal (with incentives) this winter.
