Odds And Ends: Glaus, Magglio, Halladay

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 9, 2009 at 3:14pm CDT

More links for the afternoon… for those on Roy Halladay alert, he pitched well today, though he wasn't exactly lights-out.

  • Troy Glaus could begin rehabbing this weekend, according to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis  Post-Dispatch.
  • ESPN.com's Rob Neyer says it will be "exceptionally difficult" for Magglio Ordonez to bat 166 more times if he remains in a platoon. If he bats 165 times or less, his $18MM option for 2010 doesn't vest.
  • Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News says there's almost no way the Yankees would agree to take on Vernon Wells' salary in a potential Roy Halladay deal.
  • Jay Jaffe of Baseball Prospectus writes on ESPN.com that the Phillies need Halladay now. The Rangers, Brewers, Angels and Cardinals fill out Jaffe's list of teams that need Doc most.
  • Diamond Leung reports that the Padres acquired minor league catcher Yamid Haad from the Mariners organization and assigned him to Triple A.
  • Lost and found: Bartolo Colon will start tonight for Triple A Charlotte, according to Mark Gonzales.

White Sox Sign Top Pick Jared Mitchell

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 8, 2009 at 4:05pm CDT

The White Sox are set to sign top pick Jared Mitchell, according to MLB.com's Scott Merkin. The 20-year-old hasn't officially signed, but he's expected to sign soon and report to Class A tomorrow. The White Sox, who selected Mitchell 23rd overall, haven't disclosed the terms of the bonus they'll award their top pick. Mitchell met the media and Ozzie Guillen at U.S. Cellular Field today.

MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo now says it's a done deal. The bonus is for $1.2MM, according to PGCrossChecker.com.

Heyman On Halladay, Davis, Holliday

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 8, 2009 at 12:21pm CDT

Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Jays aren't likely to deal Roy Halladay within the AL East and will likely seek premium bats and shortstops in possible deals, since Marco Scutaro becomes a free agent after the season. Heyman hears that Halladay would likely be open to playing for most contenders. Here are some details and more rumors:

  • The Jays had interest in Phillies shortstop prospect Jason Donald last year.
  • Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi won't publicly rule out any destinations, but it would be much more bearable for the Jays and their fans to see Halladay pitching in the NL, or at least outside the AL East.
  • Heyman wonders if the Giants could have interest. Imagine a rotation with four Cy Young Award winners plus Matt Cain. However, the Giants say they're looking for offense.
  • One White Sox official says the team wouldn't have traded Gordon Beckham straight up for Jake Peavy, but they would likely have to consider dealing Beckham if they want Halladay.
  • Heyman hears the Cardinals may not have the prospects to acquire Halladay. Brett Wallace and Jess Todd would presumably interest the Jays.
  • Could the A's simply hold onto Matt Holliday and collect draft choices? They'd have to risk paying him $15MM or so in arbitration next year to do so and Heyman thinks it's a possibility.
  • The D'Backs don't think they're hearing good enough offers for Doug Davis.

White Sox DFA Jimmy Gobble

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 8, 2009 at 10:27am CDT

The White Sox designated pitcher Jimmy Gobble for assignment, according to Dan McCaleb of the Northwest Herald. They signed him to a minor league deal back in April, but he disappointed in 12 innings. The 27-year-old lefty allowed 14 hits and seven walks, striking out ten.

More Halladay Chatter

By Eddie Schmid | July 7, 2009 at 9:53pm CDT

GMs' phones must be ringing off the hook tonight, and most of the incoming calls are probably from your friendly neighborhood baseball beat writer. Let's scope out the latest news from Buster Olney:

  • Olney has updated his previous post on the news, and gets word that Halladay might be open to waiving his no-trade clause.
  • Olney goes on to say that since Halladay would depart after 2010 as a likely Type A, he will command two high draft choices. Thus, all trade offers would have to begin with such talent.
  • Angels manager Mike Scioscia says GM Tony Reagins has talked to Toronto about Doc.
  • Olney runs through more suitors: the Red Sox, who have "stubbornly clung to their young pitching," the Mets and Cubs, who may or may not have the proper package of prospects, Yankees, and the Phillies.

In other news around the beat:

  • MLB.com's Jordan Bastian has a source that says over a dozen teams have asked about Halladay, with the most serious interest expressed by the Cardinals, Yankees, Mets, Brewers, Dodgers, Angels and Red Sox.
  • Adam McCalvy at MLB.com has this quote from Brewers GM Doug Melvin on the matter: "I'm open to talking about anybody…I'm also realistic to know that not everybody is available all the time."
  • Dave van Dyck at the Chicago Tribune talked to White Sox GM Kenny Williams, who reiterated his concerns about finances and doesn't think he can afford to ship the young talent Halladay will require.

Orioles Explore Deals for Pie, Salazar

By Eddie Schmid | July 7, 2009 at 9:26pm CDT

According to Jeff Zrebiec at the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles have a roster decision to make when Cesar Izturis returns from the disabled list, and thus have considered dealing Oscar Salazar and Felix Pie. Both players are out of options and are likely to get claimed if put on waivers, so a deal makes sense, Zrebiec says.

Sources say that the Orioles have discussed Pie in a potential deal for Sox corner infielder Josh Fields, who has struggled this season, though it's not clear if the Sox would still agree to such a trade. Salazar reportedly has drawn interest from some NL teams who value his positional flexibility and bat off the bench.

White Sox Acquire Tony Pena

By Eddie Schmid | July 7, 2009 at 7:13pm CDT

According to Jesse Temple at MLB.com, the White Sox have acquired RHP Tony Pena from the Diamondbacks for 1B prospect Brandon Allen.

Pena, 27, had been serving as a late-inning reliever for the D'Backs, where he's amassed a 4.24 ERA and 26/11 K/BB ratio in 34 innings. Pena is cheap and under team control through 2012.

Allen is a 23-year-old prospect with power. He's struggled since being called up to Triple-A earlier this year, putting up a .584 OPS in 13 games so far, but he mashed in the minors last year, putting up a .972 OPS in 153 Double-A at-bats.

This looks like a decent return for both teams. Pena has allowed quite a few more hits than usual this year, but sports a .352 BABIP that could be due for regression. He could be useful in the back end of the bullpen. John Sickels at Minor League Ball rated Allen the fourth-best Sox prospect before the season. This deal pretty much solidifies the Diamondbacks as sellers, so it'll be interesting to see if they move any more pieces before the deadline.

Halladay Season: Link Round-Up

By Eddie Schmid | July 7, 2009 at 6:19pm CDT

The baseball realm is a-twitter with the news that the Blue Jays will listen to offers on Roy Halladay. Let's run down the latest bullet points on this front:

  • MLB.com's Jordan Bastian has a bevy of quotes from Roy himself: "It's a situation where I think if it's best for the team, if it's best for me, then you go from there."
  • SI's Jon Heyman hears that the Jays may want a top SS prospect for the Doc, which could bode well for the Phillies, White Sox and Brewers, who all harbor chips in Jason Donald, Gordon Beckham and Alcides Escobar, respectively.
  • Scott Gregor at the Daily Herald doesn't believe a deal with the White Sox for Halladay to be a likely scenario.
  • Scott Lauber of the News-Journal says the Blue Jays already have a scout at the Phillies game tonight.
  • Bill Shaikin at the L.A. Times asks Dodgers fans what their package deal for the Doc would be.
  • Ken Davidoff at Newsday says it'd be "irresponsible" for the Mets and Yankees to not inquire on Halladay. Davidoff talked to Ricciardi, who insinuates that he wants a bigger package than what the Braves gave for Mark Teixeira a couple years ago.
  • Tony Massarotti at the Boston Globe wonders just how unlikely an intra-divisional trade would be, and according to J.P. Ricciardi via WEEI.com's Rob Bradford, he apparently wouldn't hesitate to deal to an AL East competitor.

Odds & Ends: Boras, Nationals, Bedard, White Sox, Giants, Astros

By Mike Axisa | July 3, 2009 at 7:51pm CDT

Some evening links for those of you who haven't checked out for the long holiday weekend yet.

  • Billy Witz of the NY Times wrote about the relationship between the Dodgers and superagent Scott Boras.
  • The Nationals have agreed to terms with five international players according to Bill Ladson. A formal announcement of the signings will come in a few days.
  • Pete McElroy of MASNsports.com notes that the Nats have signed a pair of draft picks, including fourth rounder AJ Morris.
  • Geoff Baker of The Seattle Times notes that Erik Bedard threw a 54-pitch simulated game today and will start on Tuesday. Teams will have just enough time to evaluate him before the trade deadline.
  • Will Carroll tweets that the Giants and White Sox "want to make a deal quick." He later backs off a bit and says that the two teams won't necessarily made a trade with each other, but both are looking for good deals.
  • Kiley McDaniel has a list of four international players the Astros have signed.

Stark On Dodgers, Giants, Brewers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 1, 2009 at 4:44pm CDT

In this ESPN Radio segment, Jayson Stark says the Dodgers will go after the best starting pitcher they can find. There's no elite starting pitching out there now, but Ned Colletti is looking to turn some up. Here are the rest of Stark's rumors:

  • The Giants need an impact hitter and they're "in on every bat out there."
  • Matt Holliday is not a likely fit for the Cardinals.
  • Stark says Doug Davis is a good fit in Milwaukee.
  • The Mets are more interested in left-handed first basemen, so Nick Johnson still looks like a good fit for them.
  • The Tigers are looking for a bat, The White Sox could add pitching and the Twins want relievers.
