Twins, Tyler Beede Agree To Minor League Deal

Right-handed pitcher Tyler Beede has reportedly agreed to a minor league contract with the Twins, per Ari Alexander of KPRC 2. He will suit up for Minnesota’s Triple-A affiliate, the St. Paul Saints.

Beede, 32 in May, was once a highly promising pitching prospect. He was selected in the first round of the draft twice, first in 2011 by the Blue Jays (with whom he did not sign) and again in 2014 by the Giants. The righty impressed as he worked his way up San Francisco’s system, with Baseball America ranking him as one of the top three prospects in the organization each year from 2015-18. Yet, Beede started to show signs of weakness following his promotion to Triple-A in 2017, and he continued to struggle upon reaching the majors. After giving up seven runs over 7 2/3 big league innings in 2018, he pitched to a 5.08 ERA and 4.71 SIERA in his first extended run of MLB action the subsequent year. Tommy John surgery kept him out of commission in 2020, and he made just one MLB appearance in 2021 before converting to a swingman role for the 2022 campaign. Over 61 1/3 innings for the Giants and the Pirates (he was DFA’d and claimed off of waivers mid-season), he put up a 5.14 ERA and 4.94 SIERA.

After being DFA’d once again that September, Beede elected free agency in the fall and took his talents to Japan in 2023. In his lone season with NPB’s Yomiuri Giants, he made 30 appearances (six starts) and pitched to a 3.99 ERA. His 16.4% strikeout rate and 9.5% walk rate were mediocre, even by the different standards of NPB, and he did not look meaningfully better over 25 1/3 innings with the Giants’ minor league club in the Eastern League. Nevertheless, he pitched well enough overseas to catch the eye of the Guardians, who signed him to a minor league deal over the 2023-24 offseason and ultimately gave him a spot on their Opening Day roster. He made 13 appearances for Cleveland before he was DFA’d at the beginning of May, producing an unfortunate 8.36 ERA through 14 innings of lower-leverage work. With that said, he did manage to collect a win and two holds, and his 26.5% strikeout rate was above average, as was his 29.7% whiff rate. All that to say, he wasn’t entirely ineffective.

Beede spent the remainder of the 2024 season with Cleveland’s Triple-A affiliate, the Columbus Clippers. Between and around two stints on the injured list, he pitched to a ghastly 11.28 ERA in 12 games (five starts). He walked 16 batters and gave up five home runs in just 22 1/3 innings of work. His second injury, an elbow strain, ultimately ended his season in August. Despite all of those reasons for concern, Beede drew interest from the Astros and Royals over the offseason and has now landed an opportunity with the Twins.

Given his uneven track record and rough numbers at both the MLB and Triple-A levels last season, Beede is facing an uphill battle back to the majors. Then again, the Twins don’t have much relief depth on their 40-man roster beyond the pitchers already in the big league bullpen. Beede could be a candidate to eat some low-leverage innings in the case of an injury to another Minnesota reliever, though he will have to compete with other depth arms on minor league contracts, such as Darren McCaughan, Richard Lovelady, and Anthony Misiewicz.

Orioles Claim Scott Blewett

The Orioles announced Monday that they’ve claimed right-handed reliever Scott Blewett off waivers from the Twins, who’d designated him for assignment over the weekend. In a corresponding move, Baltimore designated left-hander Luis Gonzalez for assignment. Blewett is out of minor league options, so he’ll have to be plugged right into manager Brandon Hyde’s bullpen.

Blewett, 29, pitched 4 2/3 innings with the Twins before being designated for assignment. He held opponents to a run on four hits and no walks (but one hit batter) with five strikeouts. He also pitched 20 1/3 innings with Minnesota last year, logging a 1.77 ERA but with shakier strikeout and walk rates of 21.4% and 9.2%, respectively, both of which are worse than league average.

Those two brief stints in Minnesota were the most recent big league work for Blewett since a similarly short look with the Royals in 2020-21. In all, he’s pitched 33 innings in the majors and has a tidy 2.18 ERA to show for it, albeit with a 22% strikeout rate and 9.9% walk rate. Even while keeping runs off the board, Blewett has been hit fairly hard; the right-hander has surrendered an average exit velocity of 92.6 mph in the majors and seen nearly half (47.9%) of his opponents’ batted balls travel at 95 mph or more.

Blewett pitched well for the Twins’ Triple-A club in 2024, logging a 3.79 ERA in 54 2/3 innings. That’s the most success he’s had in the upper minors, however. The big 6’6″ righty has pitched in parts of five Triple-A seasons between the Royals, White Sox and Twins systems but been roughed up for a 6.93 ERA in 219 1/3 innings there. In addition to those stints, Blewett had a half-season run with the Braves’ Double-A club in 2023 and also pitched for the Uni-President Lions of Taiwan’s Chinese Professional Baseball League that year, recording a 3.95 ERA in 41 innings overseas.

Gonzalez, 33, hasn’t pitched in a Triple-A game since April 8. The Orioles placed him on the minor league injured list on April 11 but did not publicly disclose the exact nature of his ailment. It’s not currently clear how long he’ll be sidelined. However, injured players cannot be placed on outright waivers, meaning Gonzalez is all but certain to end up being placed on release waivers. The O’s can renegotiate a minor league deal with him at that point if they wish, but he’ll have the chance to talk to the league’s other 29 clubs in that scenario.

Baltimore selected Gonzalez to the 40-man roster last November rather than risk losing him in the Rule 5 Draft. He’s a true journeyman — a former Phillies signee who has also spent time in the Giants’ system in addition to pitching in Japan, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and even Italy’s top league. Gonzalez spent the 2024 season with the O’s after signing a minor league deal in the 2023-24 offseason. He pitched 60 innings out of the bullpen in Triple-A Norfolk, working to a pedestrian 4.50 earned run average but showing a far more interesting 28.9% strikeout rate against a similarly intriguing 4.9% walk rate.

Gonzalez can be placed on release waivers or traded at any point in the next five days.

Twins Option Jose Miranda, Activate Brooks Lee

TODAY: The Twins officially announced Lee’s reinstatement from the IL, and Miranda being optioned to Triple-A.

APRIL 12: The Twins are set to option infielder Jose Miranda to the minor leagues, according to a report from Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic. Gleeman goes on to suggest that Miranda’s departure will make way for the return of infielder Brooks Lee, who he reports is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list after missing the start of the season due to a bout of lower back tightness.

The demotion for Miranda comes after a baserunning blunder in today’s loss to the Tigers. The Tigers’ defense set up a force out at second base for Miranda, but second baseman Colt Keith failed to touch the bag, leaving the umpire to initially call Miranda safe. However, Miranda began walking back to the dugout before ever touching second base himself under the assumption he had been called out, allowing Keith to tag him for the out and costing Minnesota an opportunity to bat with a runner in scoring position. As noted by Gleeman, manager Rocco Baldelli was candid in his comments on the mistake after the game.

“Jose has to do better on that play,” Baldelli said. “The guy on the other side of the field was not on the bag and Jose didn’t make it to the bag on the slide either way. And the umpire was clearly signaling safe. We have to be paying attention, to say the least. We have to be paying attention there and never allow something like that to happen.”

While the timing of the move can’t be ignored, it’s fair to point out that the decision may have come strictly for performance reasons even ignoring today’s blunder. After all, Miranda has struggled badly this year with a lackluster .143/.143/.229 slash line in 11 games entering play today. That slash line comes with a massive 37.1% strikeout rate and zero walks taken, suggesting the infielder’s swing decisions may not be where they need to be in order for him to succeed in the majors at the moment. Miranda has never walked especially often, but he struck out just 15.4% of the time last season.

While Miranda had only gotten 35 plate appearances this year entering play today, his struggles date back to the 2024 season as well. His overall slash line was good for a 115 wRC+, but Miranda struggled quite badly in August and September with a .217/.243/.312 slash line over his final 144 plate appearances last year. That lengthy period of issues at the plate stretching back to midway through last season suggests the infielder might need a reset in the minors, where he can focus on getting right without the pressure of trying to help lift an 4-11 ballclub out of its early-season hole.

Regardless of the reasoning behind Miranda’s departure, his spot on the active roster will go to Lee. The Twins’ first-round pick in the 2022 draft, Lee made his big league debut last year. His 50 games in the majors weren’t exactly what Minnesota was hoping for, as he hit just .221/.265/.320. He struck out just 14.6% of the time, but walked at a clip of just 5.9% and showed little power, though he did play solid defense all around the infield. In his return to the roster, Lee will likely be tasked handling either second or third base on a regular basis. Edouard Julien is currently handling the keystone while Willi Castro covers the hot corner, though Julien could work his way into the first base and DH mix if bumped off of second base while Castro has the versatility to play anywhere but catcher.

Twins Designate Scott Blewett For Assignment

The Twins announced that right-hander Scott Blewett has been designated for assignment.  The move opens up a roster spot for left-hander Kody Funderburk, who was called up from Triple-A.

Blewett’s minor league deal was selected to Minnesota’s roster earlier this week, and the righty made a good accounting for himself by allowing one run over 4 2/3 relief innings, while striking out five of 19 batters faced and allowing no walks in his two appearances.  Today’s transaction simply seems to be about getting a fresh arm into the Twins pen, since Blewett tossed 36 pitches over 2 1/3 innings in yesterday’s 7-6 loss to the Tigers.

Blewett now has a 1.80 ERA over 25 big league innings for Minnesota over the last two seasons, though the strong bottom-line results haven’t earned him any kind of roster stability.  The Twins twice outrighted him off the 40-man roster in 2024, with Blewett both times clearing waivers and electing free agency, only to resign with the club on a new minors contract.  Assuming Blewett clears waivers again, the same scenario could play out this time around, though a team in need of some swingman help could consider putting in a claim.

The return to the big leagues and then to DFA limbo has made for quite the birthday week for Blewett, who turned 29 on Thursday.  Blewett is out of minor league options, so the Twins had no choice but to pursue the DFA/outright route in order to try and send him to Triple-A.  Blewett has worked only as a reliever over his 33 career MLB innings, but he has a lot of experience as a starter in the minors and during a brief stint in the Chinese Professional Baseball League in 2023.

Darren McCaughan Elects Free Agency, Will Re-Sign With Twins

11:19am: The Twins will indeed re-sign McCaughan to a new minor league contract, reports Darren Wolfson of KSTP and SKOR North Radio. He’ll head to Triple-A St. Paul.

11:00am: Right-hander Darren McCaughan cleared waivers after being designated for assignment by the Twins and has rejected an outright assignment in favor of free agency, per his transaction log at MLB.com.

The 29-year-old McCaughan pitched 5 1/3 innings with Minnesota this season, holding opponents to a run on five hits and a walk with six strikeouts. He’s out of minor league options, so the Twins had no choice but to designate him for assignment when they wanted to shuffle up the final spot in their bullpen and get a fresh arm (righty Scott Blewett) into the mix.

McCaughan signed a minor league deal with the Twins in the offseason. The longtime Mariners farmhand has now pitched in parts of four major league seasons and worked to a 6.02 earned run average with a 16.2% strikeout rate and 8.1% walk rate in 61 1/3 innings. He’s been a durable innings eater at the Triple-A level, piling up 546 frames with a 5.14 ERA in 101 starts there. Most recently, he split the bulk of the 2024 season between the Triple-A clubs for Miami and Cleveland, logging a combined 4.73 ERA with a sharp 25.2% strikeout rate against an 8.2% walk rate.

The Twins could always quickly re-sign McCaughan on a new minor league pact, though he’ll have the opportunity to talk with the league’s other 29 clubs now. McCaughan sits at about 90 mph with his heater but has good command and hasn’t been placed on the injured list at any point in his professional career, dating back to his selection in the 12th round of the 2017 draft.

Twins Place Pablo Lopez On Injured List

April 11: The Twins announced that Lopez has been placed on the 15-day IL. Festa has been recalled from Triple-A St. Paul in his place and will get the start in tonight’s game.

April 9: The Twins plan to place Pablo López on the 15-day injured list, manager Rocco Baldelli tells reporters (including Bobby Nightengale of The Minnesota Star-Tribune and Dan Hayes of The Athletic). Minnesota’s Opening Day starter was diagnosed with a Grade One strain of his right hamstring.

A Grade One strain is the least severe. Baldelli indicated the Twins are hopeful that López will be back after a minimal IL stay. He suffered the injury during last night’s appearance in Kansas City. López needed to depart after 4 2/3 innings and 78 pitches. He went for an MRI today which revealed the mild strain. It halts a very strong start to the season. López has allowed six runs (three earned) with 14 strikeouts and two walks over 16 2/3 frames.

This will be the first injured list stint for López since the Twins acquired him from Miami in the swap for Luis Arraez during the 2022-23 offseason. He’s made all 32 starts in each of the past three seasons, in fact. López combined for 379 1/3 innings of 3.87 ERA ball over his first two years in the Twin Cities. He ranked eight in MLB in innings and tied for sixth in starts during that stretch.

The Twins blanked K.C. tonight behind an excellent start from Joe Ryan. They nevertheless have a 4-8 record. Their rotation entered play Wednesday with an MLB-worst 6.26 earned run average. López and Ryan have been excellent, but each of Simeon Woods Richardson, Chris Paddack and Bailey Ober have been hit hard through two starts.

Minnesota hasn’t had the luxury of many early-season off days. Tomorrow will be the halfway point of a stretch of 12 straight game days between April 5-16. Ober will pitch in the series finale with Kansas City. Paddack and Woods Richardson would line up for the first two starts of their weekend set in Detroit. They’ll need someone to step into López’s spot on Sunday.

Zebby Matthews and David Festa are each highly-regarded young pitchers who made their big league debuts last season. Neither player had much success as rookies, but they’re more talented than the sixth and seventh starters for a lot of teams. Matthews, who would be on regular rest for Sunday, has been excellent through his first two turns in Triple-A. He has punched out 13 against one walk while firing 10 innings of two-run ball. Festa has an 8:2 strikeout-to-walk ratio while giving up five earned runs in 8 1/3 frames. If the Twins want to keep both youngsters in the minors, they could reselect swingman Randy Dobnak after running him through outright waivers last week.

Twins Sign Richard Lovelady To Minor League Deal

The Twins added reliever Richard Lovelady on a minor league contract. The move was announced by the team’s Triple-A affiliate in St. Paul, where the left-hander was assigned. Zone Coverage’s Theodore Tollefson reported the signing before the announcement.

Lovelady elected free agency over the weekend after being designated for assignment by the Blue Jays. He’d only made two appearances with Toronto, allowing four runs across 1 2/3 innings. Lovelady had pitched in eight Spring Training contests. He struck out eight but gave up seven runs on nine hits (including three homers) and a trio of walks over 8 1/3 frames.

The Jays were Lovelady’s fifth big league team. He spent the first few seasons of his career in Kansas City and subsequently bounced to the A’s, Cubs and Rays. He pitched fairly well over 28 appearances with Tampa Bay late last season, turning in a 3.77 ERA across 28 2/3 frames. He got ground-balls at a strong 53.5% clip but had a mediocre 16.8% strikeout rate. The Rays opted not to keep him on the roster and non-tendered him.

Lovelady owns a 5.26 ERA in 101 major league innings over six seasons. His fastball sits in the low-90s and he doesn’t miss a ton of bats. Lovelady has gotten grounders on half the batted balls he has allowed while keeping left-handed hitters to a .232/.325/.345 line over 194 career plate appearances.

He’s a sensible depth add for a team with a heavily right-handed bullpen. Danny Coulombe is the only southpaw on the active roster. Kody Funderburk is in St. Paul on optional assignment. Lovelady and Anthony Misiewicz join him in Triple-A without occupying a 40-man roster spot. Lovelady is out of options, so the Twins could not send him back to the minors without running him through waivers if they call him up.

Royce Lewis Remains A Few Weeks From Beginning Rehab Assignment

Royce Lewis was cleared for a running program over the weekend, three weeks after sustaining a moderate left hamstring strain. President of baseball operations Derek Falvey told reporters that Lewis is likely around three weeks from being able to begin a minor league rehab assignment (link via Phil Miller of the Minnesota Star-Tribune).

The third baseman’s rehab hasn’t hit any kind of snag. Rather, Falvey said the Twins always anticipated that the recovery “was going to take four to six weeks, maybe six-plus weeks.” The team didn’t provide a public timetable initially, only noting that the injury wasn’t as severe as the right quad strain that cost him more than two months at the beginning of last season.

Lewis has been plagued by injuries, particularly lower half issues, throughout his career. The 2017 first overall pick has yet to top last season’s 82 games or 325 plate appearances in an MLB season. Lewis has been very productive when healthy. He’s a .268/.327/.497 hitter with 33 home runs over 605 career plate appearances — the equivalent of one full season. He added another four homers in six postseason contests in 2023.

Losing his bat has been a blow to a lineup that has had a frigid start to the season. They entered play Monday with a .198/.266/.315 team batting line, putting them alongside the Braves and Pirates as the least productive offenses in the early going. They’ve dropped seven of their first 10 while getting outscored by 14 runs. It’s an ugly first couple weeks after last season’s September collapse cost them a Wild Card spot.

Jose Miranda and Willi Castro have divided the third base playing time. Miranda has gone 5-29, striking out 10 times without drawing a walk. Castro has been more productive, collecting four doubles and a home run among his eight hits. He’ll play almost every day while bouncing around the diamond after Lewis’ return. Miranda and Ty France, to a lesser extent, have probably seen the biggest uptick in playing time.

Brooks Lee also opened the season on the injured list. He dealt with lower back tightness late in Spring Training. Lee is much closer to a return, as he began a rehab stint at Low-A Fort Myers over the weekend. Lee, the 2022 eighth overall pick, put up a .221/.265/.320 line over 50 games as a rookie last season. He had fantastic numbers in 25 Triple-A contests (.308/.368/.606) and could take over at second base when he’s activated. That’d push Castro more firmly to third base while allowing the Twins to use any of France, Miranda or potentially Edouard Julien at first base until Lewis returns.

Twins Select Scott Blewett, Designate Darren McCaughan For Assignment

The Twins announced that they have selected the contract of right-hander Scott Blewett. To make room for him on both the active and 40-man rosters, fellow righty Darren McCaughan has been designated for assignment.

McCaughan, 29, is a swingman who was selected to the Minnesota roster a week ago. On March 30, starter Bailey Ober only lasted 2 2/3 innings as he pitched through an illness, which led to Randy Dobnak covering 5 1/3 frames in relief. After that yeoman’s work, Dobnak was going to be unavailable for a few days, so the Twins swapped in McCaughan and designated Dobnak for assignment.

This move also seems to be motivated by notable innings going to the bullpen. In this case, it wasn’t just one guy. The Twins lost a heartbreaker yesterday, falling 9-7 to the Astros in ten innings, a game in which they were leading from the bottom of the first to the top of the ninth. Starter Chris Paddack had only gone four innings, so the club used seven relievers the rest of the way, including McCaughan. They also used five relievers on Saturday, leaving the overall group fairly taxed.

That has all led to McCaughan getting bumped off the 40-man. He performed well in his brief stint on the roster, tossing 5 1/3 innings over three appearances. He allowed one earned run while striking out six batters and issuing just one walk.

That’s obviously a small sample and the overall body of work is less impressive. He has a 6.02 ERA in 61 1/3 innings in his big league career. He is out of options, so his grip on a roster spot was likely tenuous even before the Minnesota pitching staff was ground into dust over the weekend. The Twins will now have to trade him or put him on waivers in the coming days. He has a previous career outright, so he will have the right to elect free agency if he is passed through waivers unclaimed.

The Twins don’t have another off-day until the 17th, so keeping the bullpen healthy enough to survive is going to be a challenge. For now, they’ve added one fresh arm in Blewett. A few days from his 29th birthday, Blewett has 28 1/3 innings of major league experience, most of that coming with the Twins last year. His 2.22 ERA looks quite nice in that small sample but his 21.3% strikeout rate and 11.5% walk rate are both subpar numbers. He’s been helped by an 86.4% strand rate, a very fortunate number, which is likely why his 3.84 FIP and 4.43 SIERA are far higher.

He was outrighted off the Twins’ roster at the end of last year and elected free agency but re-signed on a minor league deal. He had a 2.79 ERA in Spring Training but was sent to Triple-A to start the year. He allowed three earned runs in 2 1/3 innings for the Saints to open the campaign.

Blewett has mostly been working in relief this year but has done plenty of starting and long relief work in his minor league career. Given that he’s out of options and the Twins don’t have another off-day for more than a week, it’s possible they will lean on him for a few innings in what could be a short stay on the roster.

Twins Outright Randy Dobnak

The Twins sent righty Randy Dobnak outright to Triple-A St. Paul after he went unclaimed on waivers, relays Bobby Nightengale of the Minnesota Star-Tribune. As expected, Dobnak will accept the assignment and report to the minors.

Minnesota has shuttled Dobnak on and off the 40-man roster a few times over the past couple years. They can comfortably do so because of his contract. Dobnak signed a $9.25MM extension back in 2021. He’s playing on a $3MM salary and is guaranteed a $1MM buyout on a ’26 club option. Another team would need to assume that contract to claim him off waivers. As a player with less than five years of service time, Dobnak would need to forfeit the salary to decline the outright assignment in favor or free agency.

Neither situation is likely, so the Twins can continuously outright him off the roster when they want to send him to Triple-A. Dobnak has made one big league appearance this year. He worked 5 1/3 innings of mop-up relief, allowing only one run on two hits and a pair of walks. He pitched in five MLB games last season, his first big league work since 2021. Dobnak spent the rest of the season working out of the St. Paul rotation. He posted a 4.25 ERA with a solid 22.7% strikeout rate across 28 appearances. He’ll stick around as non-roster rotation or long relief depth.
