Boras Contacts Dodgers To Discuss Manny

By Alex Walsh | December 30, 2008 at 10:43pm CDT

10:43pm: A bit more from MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick.  Boras left a voicemail for Colletti, and they’ll probably talk this week.

8:48pm: Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports that Scott Boras has contacted Dodgers GM Ned Colletti regarding the future of his superstar client Manny Ramirez.

The contact was likely motivated by a recent Times piece that quoted Colletti as saying Ramirez was the Dodgers’ "first choice." Boras may be feeling pressure to get a deal done for his client, as recent rumors have connected the Dodgers to Adam Dunn and Bobby Abreu. If the Dodgers were to sign one of those free agents, they would likely no longer be interested in Ramirez.

With the list of potential suitors for Manny already shrinking, taking the Dodgers out of the picture would probably force some creative thinking on the part of Scott Boras to get his client signed.

Manny Is Dodgers’ First Choice

By Tim Dierkes | December 30, 2008 at 8:42am CDT

Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times talked to Dodgers GM Ned Colletti, who said Manny Ramirez is the team’s first choice.  Colletti hasn’t heard from Manny’s agent Scott Boras since Mark Teixeira signed a week ago.  As reported yesterday, the Dodgers have interest in Adam Dunn and Bobby Abreu as backup plans.  Pat Burrell and Garret Anderson are not on the team’s radar.

Shaikin reiterates Marty Noble’s story from yesterday – talks to unload Andruw Jones on the Mets fizzled a while ago.

Dodgers Interested In Dunn, Abreu

By Tim Dierkes | December 29, 2008 at 4:28pm CDT

4:28pm: A very Dodgers-centric day here at MLBTR.  MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick reports that in addition to Dunn, the Dodgers will soon open up talks with Bobby Abreu.  They’d like to move Andruw Jones or Juan Pierre if they sign an outfielder.

Gurnick adds that pitching is Ned Colletti’s priority – the Dodgers are eyeing Jon Garland, Randy Wolf, and relief help.

1:46pm: According to ESPN’s Jayson Stark, the Dodgers contacted Adam Dunn’s agent over the holidays to express interest.  If the Dodgers sign Dunn, Manny Ramirez could be in a really bad place.  Other teams showing interest in Dunn: the Cubs, Nationals, Mariners, and Orioles.  All five teams have surfaced in prior reports, with the Brewers also getting a mention while they were mulling a Mike Cameron trade.

There was a report nine days ago stating that the Cubs are Dunn’s first choice.  Today Stark puts it this way: "The Cubs had believed to be his top choice before the Dodgers entered the mix."

Cafardo’s Latest: Pettitte, Kotsay, Red Sox

By Nat Boyle | December 28, 2008 at 10:18am CDT

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe has a number of items to cover in today’s Sunday paper:

  • While the Mets are front-runners in the Derek Lowe sweepstakes, the Red Sox have a lot of money to play with having lost out on Mark Teixeira and could make a strong play to outbid competition.
  • The Dodgers and Rangers are interested in Andy Pettitte if he doesn’t accept the Yankees reduced $10MM offer.
  • Don’t rule out a return to the Red Sox for Mark Kotsay as a fourth outfielder and added infield depth.
  • Cafardo reports a source close to the talks says Teixeira was "very concerned" with Mike Lowell’s fate should he sign with Boston, but that financial matters and the negotiations process removed that "awkward situation."
  • Jose Fernandez can play first and third base. He’s 34 and just completed seven years in Japan, hitting 20+ HR every year. He could be an interesting right handed-hitting option for teams looking to add depth to their infield and DH.
  • The Red Sox, Orioles, Braves, Reds, and Cardinals remain interested in Kenshin Kawakami.
  • Now that Teixeira is gone, Jim Bowden is not interested in Manny Ramirez. Perhaps Adam Dunn?
  • The Sox are still unwilling to deal Clay Buchholz for Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Odds And Ends: Otsuka, Orioles, Johnson

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 27, 2008 at 11:41am CDT

I’ll keep this updated as more comes in, but for now these are your Saturday links…

  • Patrick Newman found that Akinori Otsuka will work out in front of reps from all MLB teams next month. Apparently Padres GM Kevin Towers is interested if Otsuka’s healthy.
  • Roch Kubatko knows there’s pitching talent coming from the minors, but he doesn’t love the current Orioles rotation and expects them to add two more starters.
  • The difference between 69 and 72 in 2009 wins isn’t worth much to the Orioles, Peter Schmuck writes.
  • The Red Sox move on after missing out on Mark Teixeira.
  • Eric Wedge doesn’t seem bothered by the Yankees’ big acquisitions.
  • Vernon Wells knows how hard it will be to compete now that former-teammate A.J. Burnett’s in pinstripes along with a couple other big names.
  • Keith Law says the Randy Johnson signing moves the Giants "toward 2009 respectability, if not outright contention."
  • Vlae Kershner doesn’t like the possibility of Garret Anderson on the A’s.
  • Bleed Cubbie Blue argues that Adam Dunn’s patience-power combination would work well for the Cubs. Last week Dunn said he thinks so too.
  • Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi revealed his favorite meal and dream date in a Q&A with the Sporting News.

Orioles Could Pursue Dunn

By Dan Slowey | December 25, 2008 at 5:18pm CDT

After losing out in the Mark Teixeira derby, the Orioles might consider pursuing free agent slugger Adam Dunn, according to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun. While team president Andy MacPhail emphasized that the O’s are "focusing on [their] pitching and catching primarily at this point," Zrebiec notes that if Dunn’s price came down significantly, he could could be the middle-of-the-order hitter the Orioles were looking for in Teixeira.

Dunn, 29, has hit 40 or more home runs in each the last five years, and could find the Camden Yards right-field porch particularly inviting.

Angels Standing Pat With Current Outfield

By | December 24, 2008 at 7:28pm CDT

Angels GM Tony Reagins told Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times Wednesday that his club is "not likely" to retain outfielder Garret Anderson.  Reagins also mentioned that the organization has no plans to pursue free agent outfielders Adam Dunn, Bobby Abreu or Pat Burrell.  Reagins, of course, had already written off the idea of the Halos inking Manny Ramirez.

The Angels already have a fine outfield built around Vladimir Guerrero, Juan Rivera and Torii Hunter, with Reggie Willits providing depth off the bench.  Gary Matthews Jr. probably won’t be ready for Opening Day after undergoing knee surgery in October, but he’ll also be a major contributor.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Bradley, Burrell, Dunn

By Tim Dierkes | December 23, 2008 at 1:54pm CDT

Ken Rosenthal filed a new column earlier today.

  • The Angels are lukewarm on Manny Ramirez, and for now are talking about filling their lineup with internal candidates.
  • Kevin Towers says that if the Jake Peavy sweepstakes heats back up, "nobody is going to know it."  Rosenthal discusses the chances of the Angels or Cubs.
  • Mark Teixeira is "almost certain" to get an escape clause in his deal.
  • The Cubs are confident about signing Milton Bradley, but the Rays, Yankees, and Nationals are interested too.
  • Rosenthal looks at possibilities for Pat Burrell, discussing the Rays, Mariners, Rangers, and Reds.
  • The Brewers expressed interest in Adam Dunn as they were mulling a Mike Cameron trade (Corey Hart would’ve played center).
  • Bobby Abreu "remains in touch with the Yankees."  Surprisingly to hear, as the two sides reportedly had not spoken for quite a while.
  • The Rangers would like to move some salary, with Kevin Millwood, Vicente Padilla, and Hank Blalock the candidates.
  • The Royals like Jerry Hairston Jr., but don’t have the money to sign him.

How Will The Angels Spend Their Money?

By Tim Dierkes | December 22, 2008 at 12:02pm CDT

12:02pm: Boras gave a prepared statement regarding the Angels and Tex, saying that the player’s interest has been sincere.  Boras left the door open for the Angels, but why wouldn’t he?

11:28am: So the Angels are out of the running for Mark Teixeira.  Now what?  They’ve re-signed Juan Rivera, making Manny Ramirez a "reach" according to Jerry Crasnick’s source.  Mike DiGiovanna has suggestions:

The Angels…could also look to bolster their offense by pursuing a free-agent outfielder such as Bobby Abreu, Pat Burrell, Adam Dunn, or, possibly, Manny.  Or, they could look to trade for a hitter such as Jermaine Dye, Paul Konerko, Garrett Atkins or Joey Votto.  They will probably use some of the money budgeted for Teixeira to sign closer Brian Fuentes, who is seeking a three-year, $30-million deal and has said that the Angels are his first choice.

Votto seems a long shot to be traded.  Acquiring Dye or Atkins would require young pitching the Halos may not be able to spare.  Adding another outfielder would not be ideal, with Vladimir Guerrero, Torii Hunter, Rivera, and Gary Matthews Jr. in the mix for those three spots and the DH spot.  Still, it could be done.  Burrell or Dunn can at least play some first base.  The Konerko idea seems reasonable, if he’d approve the trade.

What’s Next For The Braves?

By Tim Dierkes | December 22, 2008 at 7:55am CDT

David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution sums up the Braves’ current known targets in his latest blog post.  As O’Brien notes, things have not gone according to plan for the Braves this winter.

  • The Braves have yet to indicate interest in Adam Dunn or Pat Burrell for their left field vacancy.  Juan Rivera might’ve been an option; he re-signed with the Angels.  Since the Braves struggled against lefties in 2008, Burrell would be a better fit.
  • They have not indicated any interest in Ben Sheets, nor have they shown serious interest in Derek Lowe.  The Braves’ #7 draft pick next year is protected, should they sign one of the two.
  • The Braves are "squarely in the bidding" for Japanese starter Kenshin Kawakami.
