Marlins To Acquire Dylan Floro

By Steve Adams and Connor Byrne | February 12, 2021 at 2:32pm CDT

2:32pm: The Dodgers are also getting righty Kyle Hurt, a fifth-round pick of the Marlins in 2020. Hurt is a California native who pitched at USC. Baseball America wrote before the draft that teams interested in Hurt “see his future as a hard-throwing reliever.”

2:01pm: The Marlins are set to acquire right-handed reliever Dylan Floro from the Dodgers in exchange for lefty Alex Vesia and a prospect, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports (via Twitter). It’s the second bullpen-related trade of the day for the Dodgers, who dealt lefty Adam Kolarek to the A’s in exchange for infielder Sheldon Neuse as part of a four-player trade this morning.

Floro may provide an upgrade to Miami’s bullpen, which was among the worst in the majors a year ago. The 30-year-old, whom the Dodgers acquired in a trade with the Reds in 2018, pitched to a 3.10 ERA/3.68 SIERA with a 22.4 percent strikeout rate and 7.1 percent walk rate in 98 2/3 innings in a Los Angeles uniform. Floro’s 52.7 percent groundball rate during that span was one of the main reasons he was so effective, as he also posted a meager 8.5 percent home run-to-fly ball rate. Floro isn’t eligible for arbitration until after this season, and he’s not due to become a free agent until the end of 2023, so he could be a multiyear piece for Miami.

Vesia, 24, was a 17th-round pick of the Marlins in 2018 who made a 4 1/3-inning major league debut last season and allowed nine earned runs on seven hits and seven walks (with five strikeouts). He does, however, carry a 1.62 ERA with great strikeout and walk rates in 100 innings of work in the minors.

Marlins Announce Several Roster Moves

By George Miller | August 29, 2020 at 2:08pm CDT

The Marlins have made a series of roster moves this afternoon, announcing via Twitter that they’ve activated three players—pitchers Robert Dugger and Alex Vesia, along with catcher Chad Wallach—from the injured list. Meanwhile, right-hander Humberto Mejia was optioned to the team’s alternate training site, while RHP Brett Eibner, catcher Brian Navarreto, and LHP Josh D. Smith were designated for assignment.

Eibner, Navarreto, and Smith will no longer occupy a position on the Miami 40-man roster. The Marlins will have a week to either trade, release, or outright assign those three players.

Eibner, a former outfielder, has made the transition to pitcher, making his first two big league appearances with the Marlins, though they didn’t play out as hoped, with Eibner surrendering three earned runs in 1 1/3 innings of work.

Dugger and Vesia will replace Eibner and Smith in the Miami pitching staff, offering one righty and one lefty option. Dugger, Vesia, and Wallach were all placed on the injured list for undisclosed reasons.

Marlins Place 13 Players On Injured List

By Steve Adams | August 4, 2020 at 5:44pm CDT

The Marlins announced today that they’ve placed 13 players on the injured list. Those going on the IL include right-handers Sandy Alcantara, Jeff Brigham, Robert Dugger, Yimi Garcia, Jordan Holloway, Nick Neidert and Ryne Stanek; left-handers Adam Conley, Caleb Smith and Alex Vesia; infielders Sean Rodriguez and Miguel Rojas; and catcher Chad Wallach.

Miami also made official a previously reported slate of roster moves. Lefty Richard Bleier was acquired from the Orioles in exchange for a player to be named later or cash. Right-hander James Hoyt was acquired from the Indians for cash. The club also claimed relievers Justin Shafer and Josh D. Smith from the Reds, claimed reliever Mike Morin from the Brewers and claimed reliever (and former Marlin) Brian Moran from the Blue Jays. Veteran infielder Logan Forsythe signed a one-year, Major League deal.

As for internal moves, the Fish called up right-hander Jorge Guzman, outfielder Monte Harrison and righty Jordan Yamamoto. The club also selected the contracts of left-hander Dan Castano, right-hander Josh A. Smith, right-hander Nick Vincent, catcher Ryan Lavarnway and infielder Eddy Alvarez. Outfielders Matt Joyce and Lewis Brinson were activated from the injured list.

It’s a dizzying sequence of moves brought about by the Covid-19 outbreak that decimated the organization’s Major League roster. Miami ultimately wound up with a reported 18 players and two coaches testing positive, and the outbreak caused scheduling delays with the Phillies, Yankees, Blue Jays and Nationals in addition to the Marlins. Miami was left with a depleted roster and forced to scramble to simply cobble together a roster and continue its season.

The losses of Alcantara and Smith will remove two of Miami’s top rotation options from the mix for the time being, while Rojas was the team’s starting shortstop. Stanek had been expected to occupy a high-leverage late-inning role, and Conley is one of the team’s most experienced bullpen pieces.

Alex Vesia, Sterling Sharp Make Marlins’ Roster

By Steve Adams and Connor Byrne | July 23, 2020 at 12:18am CDT

Left-handed reliever Alex Vesia and righty Sterling Sharp have made the Marlins’ Opening Day roster, per reports from Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald and Jon Heyman of MLB Network (Twitter links). Vesia is not on the team’s 40-man roster, so his contract will be selected before the season kicks off. The Marlins’ 40-man roster is technically full, but they have a few players who appear to be on the Covid-19 injured list, and those players won’t count against the 40-man until they’re activated. A corresponding move or moves from the club may yet come, depending on other additions Miami wishes to make.

It seems safe to say that the 24-year-old Vesia has exceeded expectations set for him when he was a 17th-round pick just two summers ago. A product of Division-II Cal State East Bay, Vesia skyrocketed across three levels last year, pitching to a combined 1.76 ERA with a ridiculous 100-to-19 K/BB ratio in 66 2/3 innings of relief. He’s a pure bullpen prospect, but Vesia has a career 1.62 ERA since being drafted.

He ranks 21st among Miami prospects, per FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen, and checks in 27th at MLB.com. Vesia’s innings in 2020 will obviously be limited, given expanded rosters and the shortened season, but he’ll get his first look at MLB opponents in the near future and could potentially be a piece of the Miami bullpen for years to come.

Sharp spent the first few years of his professional career with the division-rival Nationals, who used a 22nd-round pick on him in 2016. The Marlins plucked Sharp from the Nats with the No. 3 overall selection in last December’s Rule 5 Draft after he turned in a productive season among the rookie, Low-A and Double-A levels in 2019. Sharp totaled 58 2/3 frames of 3.53 ERA pitching and 8.0 K/9 against 2.3 BB/9. FanGraphs (No. 30) and MLB.com (28th) regard the 25-year-old Sharp as a prospect of note in the Marlins’ system, with Longenhagen writing he could turn into a back-end starter in MLB.
