  • Mets third baseman David Wright, a free agent after next season assuming his 2013 option is picked up, will likely seek an eight-year contract extension of $150MM, using the long-term deals of franchise players Troy Tulowitzki, Matt Kemp and Joey Votto as negotiating points.
  • With several hard-to-trade veterans on the roster in Wandy Rodriguez, Carlos Lee and Brett Myers, the Astros might be well advised to trade second baseman Jose Altuve as a means to replenish their farm system. Houston has a well-regarded second base prospect in the minors in Jimmy Paredes, who was acquired in the deal that sent Lance Berkman to the Yankees.
  • Most teams expect the Cubs to trade Matt Garza, but the North Siders are also considering re-signing the right-hander to a long-term extension. If the Cubs opt to trade Garza, though, they should be able to draw interest from pitching-needy AL East teams, as well as the Tigers.
  • The Red Sox are motivated to trade Kevin Youkilis sooner than later, wanting to preclude a distraction and limit the positional shuffling of Adrian Gonzalez, but potential suitors want to see Youkilis remain healthy and productive before buying. The Dodgers are an obvious fit, while the Diamondbacks, who expressed interest last offseason, might not have the financial flexibility to take on the $12MM owed to Youk.

Wright Won’t Discuss Contract During Season

David Wright told Ed Coleman of WFAN Radio that he will not discuss a new contract with the Mets during the season, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter).  The third baseman has also let the club know that he won't negotiate in-season, a team source told Mike Puma of the New York Post (via Twitter).  Wright is earning $15MM this season with a club option for 2013 worth $16MM.

Earlier this week, GM Sandy Alderson said that he planned on offering the 29-year-old a new contract at some point during the season.  Mets CEO Jeff Wilpon supported that notion, but added that the club wasn't necessarily in a rush to get a deal done.

Wright has been outstanding thus far in 2012, boasting a slash line of .365/.463/.565 with five homers in 203 plate appearances.

New York Notes: Cabrera, Swisher, Wright

  • Baseball officials are skeptical that Melky Cabrera can sustain his performance as an elite player, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. However, there’s no denying that Cabrera has played at an All-Star level since the 2011 season. “He has turned into one of the better hitters in the league,” Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers said. Sherman chronicles Cabrera’s journey from extra outfielder in New York to middle-of-the-order hitter in San Francisco.
  • Sherman suggests the budget conscious Yankees will probably not sign Cabrera or Nick Swisher when the switch-hitting outfielders hit free agency after the season.
  • Ken Davidoff of the New York Post offers a template for how the Mets can handle David Wright’s contract status in the coming months and years. Davidoff suggests the Mets offer Wright an extension later this year — maybe $115MM for six years — and exercise their 2013 club option if he declines to sign. The Mets could then listen to trade offers for the third baseman and make a deal if an exceptional offer emerged. Though the Mets can’t control the result of their discussions with Wright, they can manage the process, Davidoff writes.

Mets Intend To Offer Wright Extension During Season

WEDNESDAY: Mets CEO Jeff Wilpon spoke to ESPN New York's Adam Rubin and backed up Alderson's statement, though he didn't make it sound like getting a contract worked out with Wright is an urgent matter.

"As Sandy said I think last night, [Wright is] under contract this year," said Wilpon. "We have an option for next year. There's no gun to anybody's head. So let it just play out. And at the right time Sandy and I will discuss it and it'll move on."

TUESDAY: Earlier this month we heard that the Mets were likely to offer David Wright a long-term contract, and today GM Sandy Alderson confirmed to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com that an offer will be made during the season. He would not disclose the size of the offer or when the superstar third baseman could expect it.

"I would expect sometime before the season's over, we will have a conversation," said Alderson. "I'm hopeful he'll be here a long time."

Wright, 29, is making $15MM this season and has a club option for 2013 worth $16MM. He came into the day hitting .373/.474/.578 with five homers and more walks (32) than strikeouts (29). Ryan Zimmerman's six-year, $100MM extension with the Nationals seems like just a starting point for a new Wright deal given his superior performance record and durability.

Heyman On Greinke, Red Sox, Wright

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com has the latest from a handful of MLB owners…

  • Brewers owner Mark Attanasio told Heyman he wants to sign Zack Greinke to a long-term deal. "Sure, why not? We'd like to keep him,” Attanasio said. Greinke, a free agent this offseason, said he likes playing in Milwaukee. "Good owner. Good guys in management. Good guys in the clubhouse. Really good, really good,'' Greinke said. It’s likely Greinke will ask for a $100MM contract this offseason, and that would be a lot for the small-market Brewers to commit.
  • Red Sox owner Tom Werner told Heyman that manager Bobby Valentine is "absolutely" doing fine (Twitter link).
  • Mets owner Fred Wilpon told Heyman that he hopes to retain David Wright long-term (Twitter links). Wilpon says his third baseman is "a great kid and a great player."

The Angels announced that Mickey Hatcher has been removed from his job as the team's hitting coach.  Hatcher will be replaced by Jim Eppard, who had been the hitting coach at Triple-A Salt Lake City.  This was Hatcher's 13th year as the Angels' hitting coach, and his firing is surely a response to the club's overall lack of offense this season, particularly from Albert Pujols.  (Ironically, Pujols hit three singles in today's 4-0 win over the A's.)  Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times thinks this move came from owner Arte Moreno and is another sign that GM Jerry Dipoto is in charge of the team, not Mike Scioscia (both Twitter links).

  • David Wright told Adam Rubin of ESPN New York that he hasn't been approached by the Mets about a contract extension and he hasn't thought about the possibility of in-season negotiations.  We heard on Sunday that the Mets will likely offer Wright a multiyear contract, possibly sometime this summer.
  • Melky Cabrera and Angel Pagan, both free agents after the season, told Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle that they'd be open to midseason contract talks with the Giants but are both just focused on baseball for now.
  • Danny Duffy's Tommy John surgery is just the latest blow in what has been a hard-luck season for the Royals, writes Sam Mellinger of the Kansas City Star.  The Royals will essentially lose a year of control over Duffy (who will accumulate service time while on the DL) and "the pressure on the Royals…to sign a frontline starting pitcher this winter just intensified," said Mellinger.

Heyman On Myers, Lee, Wright, Rangers

The latest notes and rumors from Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com:

  • Astros people say they aren't thinking about trading their veteran players at this point, according to Heyman. One non-Astros executive likes Wandy Rodriguez and Brett Myers as midsummer trade candidates. 
  • However, the executive said it won't be easy to move Carlos Lee and his $18MM salary. Lee can block trades to 14 teams and badly wants to stay in Houston. A possible trade to the Brewers fell through months ago, Heyman reports.
  • High-level Mets people such as COO Jeff Wilpon generally support David Wright, Heyman reports. The Mets won't trade Wright this summer and will try to lock him up before long, Heyman writes. It would take something "extraordinary'' for Wright to be traded this year, GM Sandy Alderson confirmed to Heyman. If the Mets were to trade Wright this summer, he would obtain the right to void a $16MM club option for 2013 and become a free agent this offseason. Mets people view Wright as a more reliable player than Jose Reyes, Heyman writes.
  • Heyman also points out that Josh Hamilton's performance is going to make re-signing him that much more complex for the Rangers.

Mets Likely to Offer Wright A Long-Term Deal

The Mets are quietly preparing to offer David Wright a long-term contract extension at some point this year, perhaps as soon as this summer, a baseball official briefed on the Mets' thinking told Brian Costa of the Wall Street Journal.  Three weeks ago, the third baseman told reporters that he has yet to discuss a contract extension with the club.

Wright, 29, is making $15MM this season and has a club option for 2013 worth $16MM.  General Manager Sandy Alderson declined to comment on any potential negotiations but did say that Wright would not be on the trading block this year.

"I certainly do not foresee, under any circumstances, David being a topic of discussion at the trade deadline," the GM said.

Even though Wright is off to a blazing start, the club doesn't feel as though there is an rush for them to begin discussing an extension with his representatives.  However, the official told Costa that they are likely to do so before next winter because if they cannot reach an agreement, the club would have to consider trading him in the offseason.

While the Mets always believed that Jose Reyes would sign with whichever club offered him the most money, the club believes that they can sign Wright at a discount because of his affinity for playing in New York.

  • Dan Szymborski of ESPN and Baseball Think Factory takes his readers on a tour of the worst trades in recent history. The Bartolo Colon trade and the Mark Teixeira trade top the list, but the Vernon Wells–Mike Napoli swap also makes an appearance.
  • Marvin Miller, the 95-year-old former leader of the MLB players association, says player salaries are reasonable when compared to the earnings of some CEOs, the Associated Press reports (via ESPN.com). Miller describes the current dynamic between owners and players as a win-win situation. "It is an amazing story how under those circumstances, there can be both management and labor really winning," Miller said.
