Rockies Release Harrison Musgrave

The Rockies have released left-handed reliever Harrison Musgrave, according to Chris Hilburn-Trenkle of Baseball America. The club previously outrighted him off its 40-man roster last summer.

Now 26 years old, Musgrave entered the professional ranks as an eighth-round pick of the Rockies in 2014. He received his first promotion to Colorado in 2018 despite posting less-than-stellar numbers in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League in the preceding couple years. With 44 2/3 innings as a rookie, Musgrave finished seventh among Rockies relievers in that category, though he struggled to prevent runs in that span. Musgrave could only muster a 4.63 ERA/5.31 FIP with 6.45 K/9, 4.43 BB/9 and a 38.3 percent groundball rate then.

Last season went down as an injury-shortened one for Musgrave, who battled elbow issues. His production in Colorado took steps forward, though it was in a much smaller sample of work. Across 10 innings, Musgrave allowed four earned runs on nine hits, seven walks and 12 strikeouts. He mostly spent the year in Triple-A Albuquerque, where he pitched to a whopping 10.13 ERA over 24 frames.

Post-Deadline Outrights: Flynn, De La Cruz, Guerra, Blazek

In the immediate aftermath of the trade deadline, a handful of clubs cleared 40-man roster space with a series of designations. Many of those players have since cleared waivers, and we’ll round up those minor moves here…

  • The Royals announced that southpaw Brian Flynn was outrighted to Triple-A after clearing waivers.  Flynn has a 5.22 ERA over 29 1/3 innings for K.C. this season, a disappointing result for a reliever who posted solid numbers out of the Royals’ bullpen in both 2016 and 2018.

  • Cubs minor-league right-hander Oscar de la Cruz has cleared waivers. The 24 year-old has seen his once-lofty prospect status deteriorate due to a combination of injuries, command woes, and a suspension for a masking agent. He’ll remain with the club’s AA affiliate in the Southern League.
  • Nationals right-handers Javy Guerra and Michael Blazek each cleared waivers and were outrighted to Triple-A Fresno. Because each veteran has previously been outrighted, they may elect free agency, but the shaky Washington bullpen could plausibly offer them the best opportunity to return to the big leagues in short order.
  • Giants right-handed reliever Dan Winkler was outrighted. San Francisco acquired him as a salary offset in the Mark Melancon trade but never had any interest in letting him see the field amidst a disappointing 2019 season. Winkler can elect free agency because he has over three years of MLB service.
  • Rockies left-handed relief arm Harrison Musgrave will remain on hand at Triple-A Albuquerque after clearing. The 27 year-old has had little success in 45 MLB games in Colorado over the past two seasons.
  • Diamondbacks right-hander Joey Krehbiel will remain on-hand at Triple-A Reno. Fangraphs’ Eric Longenhagen and Kiley McDaniel named the 26 year-old reliever a prospect to watch thanks to a plus changeup preseason, but he’s had a nightmarish season in the Pacific Coast League.
  • Veteran catcher Tim Federowicz has cleared. The backstop had been playing for the Rangers, but he may elect to catch on elsewhere on a minor-league deal.
  • Phillies corner infielder Mitch Walding has also cleared waivers. He’ll remain in Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he’s struggled to make contact in 2019.
  • Eric Stamets, the Indians’ Opening Day shortstop, has cleared as well. The 27 year-old has put up anemic offensive numbers with Triple-A Columbus, where he’ll continue to try to right the ship, over the past two seasons.

The latest minor moves from around baseball…

  • Left-hander Robbie Ross recently joined the Sugar Land Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League. The 30-year-old has already thrown 7 1/3 innings with the club, striking out 13 but allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits and six walks. Ross spent last season in the minors with the White Sox after an injury-limited 2017 in Boston. Before that, Ross was fairly successful in the majors with the Rangers and Red Sox from 2012-16 – a 321 2/3-inning span in which he logged a 3.83 ERA/3.78 FIP with 7.41 K/9, 3.22 BB/9 and a 52.3 percent groundball rate.
  • The Rockies made a pair of 40-man roster transactions Wednesday, moving infielder Brendan Rodgers to the 60-day injured list after he underwent season-ending shoulder surgery and reinstating lefty Harrison Musgrave from the 60-day IL. The club optioned Musgrave, who hasn’t pitched since May 3 because of a flexor strain, to Triple-A Albuquerque after activating him. The 27-year-old Musgrave allowed four earned runs on nine hits and seven walks (with 12 strikeouts) in 10 innings before his IL placement. As a rookie last season, Musgrave threw 44 2/3 frames to rank seventh among Rockies relievers in that category, but he only mustered a 4.63 ERA/5.31 FIP with 6.45 K/9 against 4.43 BB/9.

Charlie Blackmon Likely To Return Friday

The Rockies will activate outfielder Charlie Blackmon from the 10-day injured list Friday, Kyle Newman of the Denver Post suggests. Meanwhile, the Rockies lost left-handed reliever Mike Dunn to the 10-day IL on Thursday (retroactive to June 3) because of left AC joint inflammation and transferred fellow southpaw Harrison Musgrave to the 60-day IL, per a team announcement. Musgrave’s 40-man spot went to righty Peter Lambert, who shut down the Cubs in a 3-1 win in his major league debut.

Although Blackmon’s one of their most valuable players, the Rockies (32-29) ripped off 10 wins in 15 games as he sat out with a right calf strain. Colorado’s just half a game behind a wild-card spot thanks to that impressive run, and Blackmon’s return should help the team’s cause as it pushes for a third straight playoff berth. The 32-year-old Blackmon slashed .300/.356/.565 (126 wRC+) with 10 home runs in 219 plate appearances before landing on the shelf.

The IL placement for Dunn, 34, is the latest negative development in a long line of them since he joined the Rockies on an ill-fated contract going into the 2017 campaign. The injury’s all the more troubling given that Dunn missed most of last season with an AC joint issue that required surgery in September.

Now in the last season of his three-year, $19MM deal, Dunn has pitched to a 5.19 ERA/4.83 FIP in 17 1/3 innings. Overall as a Rockie, Dunn has thrown 84 2/3 frames and logged a 5.53 ERA/4.88 FIP with 8.82 K/9, 5.53 BB/9 and a 35 percent groundball rate.

Rockies Option Tyler Anderson, Place Harrison Musgrave On IL

The Rockies have optioned left-handed starter Tyler Anderson to Triple-A Albuquerque and placed southpaw reliever Harrison Musgrave on the 10-day injured list with a flexor strain in his pitching elbow, according to Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post. The club recalled righties Yency Almonte and DJ Johnson from Albuquerque to take the spots of Anderson and Musgrave.

Anderson, a first-round pick of the Rockies in 2011, has been a full-time member of their rotation since debuting in 2016. While Anderson’s numbers have gone downhill since an impressive 19-start, 114 1/3-inning rookie campaign, he has nonetheless looked like another solid homegrown arm for the Rockies for most of his career.  Prior to 2019, Anderson had pitched to a matching 4.30 ERA/FIP with 8.23 K/9, 2.7 BB/9 and a 42.7 percent groundball rate over 376 1/3 innings.

Unfortunately, things have gone off the rails this year for Anderson, who has opened with five starts of 11.76 ERA/7.52 FIP pitching and averaged a mere four innings per appearance. Anderson did strike out 21.7 percent of batters in that 20 2/3-inning span, right in line with his career mark of 21.8, but he also walked 10.4 percent (well above his lifetime figure of 7.4) and yielded a whopping 3.48 home runs per nine. And though Anderson’s .391 batting average on balls in play, 51.4 percent strand rate and .476 weighted on-base average against indicate fortune hasn’t been on his side, he has still surrendered the majors’ 10th-worst xwOBA (.414).

Neither mechanics nor health are to blame for Anderson’s woes, per manager Bud Black, who says the 29-year-old needs to work on pitch-to-pitch “consistency” in the minors. As they wait for Anderson to work his way back, the Rockies may recall righty Jeff Hoffman to replace Anderson in their rotation, Saunders suggests. Hoffman, 26, was once among the game’s finest pitching prospects, but he has lost a substantial amount of luster in the majors and minors over the past couple seasons. Triple-A hitters have tattooed Hoffman for 19 earned runs on 23 hits and nine walks in just 18 2/3 innings this year.

Meanwhile, Colorado’s bullpen will have to make do without Musgrave for a to-be-determined period of time. Musgrave was subpar as a rookie last season, but he has begun this year with a 3.60 ERA/2.82 FIP and 10.8 K/9 in 10 innings. Musgrave was effective against both left- and right-handed hitters before his injury, though he also walked 6.3 per nine and only induced grounders at a 25 percent clip.

Rockies Place Chris Rusin On 10-Day DL, Move Carlos Estevez To 60-Day DL

The Rockies have announced a trio of pitching moves. Southpaw Chris Rusin will head to the 10-day DL with an intercostal strain, with fellow southpaw Harrison Musgrave replacing him on the active roster.

Bringing up Musgrave meant opening a 40-man spot, which the Rox accomplished by shifting reliever Carlos Estevez to the 60-day DL. He opened the year on the 10-day list owing to an oblique issue, but is now said to be dealing with an elbow strain. The team says Estevez is not at risk of requiring Tommy John surgery, Nick Groke of The Athletic tweets, though he’ll now have to sit for at least the first two months of the current campaign.

Rusin, 31, has been a huge asset for the Colorado pen over the past two seasons. The converted starter has consistently given good innings — often, more than one at a time — after having failed to stick in the rotation. Since a rough first outing, Rusin has been effective. His fastball velocity has been in line with prior seasons and he was generating grounders and swinging strikes at rates generally commensurate with his recent work.

While the Rockies wait for their longman to return, they’ll get a look at a 26-year-old lefty who has yet to reach the game’s highest level. Musgrave has spent the past couple seasons in the upper minors, where he has worked exclusively as a starter. He’s carrying a 3.38 ERA with ten strikeouts and two walks in his 10 2/3 innings at Triple-A Albuquerque thus far in 2018.

Rockies Notes: Bullpen, Rotation, Dahl

Just last year, the Rockies’ bullpen ranked in baseball’s bottom third, coming in 21st in baseball with a 2.2 fWAR. So far this year, their relievers are the best in the game using that same metric, with a 1.4 fWAR and a 2.80 ERA that’s remarkable considering the context in which they pitch. The Denver Post’s Nick Groke explains the bullpen’s transformation, beginning with the signings of Greg Holland and Mike Dunn last winter. “Greg Holland and Mike Dunn have been fabulous for the mentality of the bullpen,” says manager Bud Black. “They have made a marked difference with the professionalism of that group. There’s no doubt they have set the standard.” So far, the pair have combined for 11 1/3 scoreless innings, and Dunn has performed very well despite his signing receiving lukewarm reviews from commentators. As Groke points out, Holland and Dunn look like far better gambles so far than Chad Qualls and Jason Motte were in 2015-16 (Qualls is currently hurt; the Rockies recently released Motte, and he signed a minor-league deal with the Braves.) Of course, it’s very early in the season.

  • With top starter Jon Gray set to miss at least a month with a foot injury, the Rockies figure to turn to one of Jeff Hoffman, German Marquez or Harrison Musgrave to fill the void, writes Thomas Harding of MLB.com. Veteran swingman Chris Rusin has more major league starting experience than any of them, but he isn’t in contention to reenter the Rockies’ rotation because they like the value he provides to their bullpen, Black indicated. The 24-year-old Hoffman and the 22-year-old Marquez are among the premier prospects in the game, with Baseball America ranking the former 36th and the latter 53rd, and the two garnered some big league experience last season. While the 25-year-old Musgrave hasn’t yet cracked the bigs, nor does he carry a high-end prospect pedigree, he did come close to winning a job with the Rockies during the spring, notes Harding.
  • Outfielder David Dahl, on the shelf since early March with a stress fracture in his ribcage, feels healthy enough to return, but the Rockies are taking a cautious approach with the 23-year-old, per Groke. Dahl won’t be able to swing a bat until at least next week, as the Rockies first want to see the results from the MRI bone scan he’ll undergo April 21. “Honestly, I’ve been saying I’m ready to play. But they said you can feel good, but it still might not be healed,” said Dahl. “They want to make sure the bone scan comes back and it shows it’s healed.” If the scan yields good news, it should put Dahl on track to make his 2017 debut in May.
